Most of the best strikers around at the moment seems to be in their thirties. Perhaps says more about the quality of strikers being produced than anything else but it seems to me we could expect a few years of decent service from him if we think he's good enough to pay the price.

I think he's exactly what we need to bring some much needed physicality to the forward line.

I’m not a fan. Looked like a donkey in his first couple of seasons and he’s simply having a purple patch, in the same way that Daniel Sturridge looked amazing for a season or two.
We need a higher calibre of striker, though given our lowly league position I’m not sure we can do much better.

The sort of player who should be one of a squad of strikers here, not our main striker.
Atleast he won't fall over every time you have a tussle with defenders.

How the mighty have fallen. A goal scoring purple patch does not disguise the fact that he’s a very average player.
I’m certainly not against this, he’s PL proven, at least the last couple of seasons anyway which is what we’d be hoping to sign and not the player from the previous 4. The current version of Mateta is a massive upgrade on what we’ve currently got and his upturn in form has coincided with a manager that plays a similar system to ours.
I'd say it's a bit more than a purple patch? Hes on course for 15+ PL goals in two consecutive seasons.

I mean sure he is better than our strikers, but he should not be our main project striker for next season. I would take him as a squad option.
He is our level right now. Will help us reach top 10, which should be our first target. Get him for decent price and spend on other areas.

Just caught BBC article said he's emerged as a target for us so I wouldn't say it's necessarily misleading.

If we want an average striker cos we have no money and our aspirations are to be top 10 then just go for Jonathan David for free.
Who would you sign instead given our transfer budged limitations and our likely inability to offer CL. I don’t think Gyokeres will pick us as he will have the pick of clubs to choose from. Osimhen’s wage demands were too much for Chelsea.
If it was any other reporter sure but Simon Stone doesn't put his name on something without some clear conviction. I agree the wording isn't as clear cut though.
Osimhen and Gyökeres are obviously the two. They may not be interested, or in Osimhen's case, may be demanding too high a wage, as you say. Failing that, I'd be tempted to move for Samu Aghehowa, though he would obviously be expensive too.
Mateta is a beast - tall and physical and has had two good premier league seasons.
David is small, not particularly fast and is not premier league proven.
I would rather spend the 25-30m on Mateta.
Yeah, BBC Sport are not hard to decipher on this stuff. If they put out an article saying Man Utd could target Mateta what that mean is they spoke to someone involved in transfers at Man Utd and were told that we could target Mateta.

I think I am too jaded by Hojlund and Zirkzee and just want someone premier league proven.
Any thoughts on the building slowly part? We’ve signed class players over the years and they’ve failed.
