Jean-Clair Todibo | signs for West Ham on loan with option to buy

I like him a lot. He seems very hard to get past 1 on 1 and is very fast in catching widemen. I think he should learn to tackle and intercept more cleanly though. A few times there he does great to win the ball or anticipate and intercept a through ball but his touch takes the ball out for a thrown in, thus losing possession and maintaining threat.

If he can learn to do that he has the potential to be a colossal defender, like a Van Dijk.

Almost read that as women..

I vote no to this. For me. At this moment he doesn't look like athletic player.

And i think i like and prefer Lille's young CB Yoro more.

Yoro is a lot younger. 18 age like Mainoo.

Yoro from Lille and a left foot Branthwaite from Everton and the 2 CBs right now i am considering most.
But not final decision yet.

What’s your definition of athleticism?

In my eyes his athleticism is his main strength. Only area he is arguably slightly weaker in physically is his aerial ability but he’s 1.9m so not really a big problem.

The market for Yoro is looking huge right now, looks an amazing talent.

A Lucky Scout kiss of death is all I need to unwatch this thread. I go by his recommendations.

I think our first choice should be Bremer. He reads the game better and is more dominant in the air. For overall athleticism Todibo is ahead but Bremer is the safer option and compliments Martinez better. If we want 2 CBs then it’s Bremer and Branthwaite for me.

What's Bremer like on the ball, though?

Only thing is, would Yoro be ready to come in and play next to Martinez, because the defender we sign will no doubt be a straight replacement for Varane?

Alternatively, both Varane and Maguire could go, and so we'd need to be looking at an established RCB and young LCB.

From the players we've been linked with, our RCB will be one of:

Bremer
Todibo
Adarabioyo

As for LCB, I like Branthwaite, but I'd go for Hato of Ajax.

RCB
Martinez
Lindelof
LCB

Todibo is a really solid option, just not an exceptional one for me. Could certainly form a good partnership with Martínez, or potentially Branthwaite, but I would personally be looking at the likes of Yoro, Diomande, Tapsoba and Branthwaite, before Todibo comes into the picture.

Don't get me wrong, if we can get Todibo for a fair price, I'll be very satisfied. We might be signing two centre backs, anyways.

Walters_19_MuFc Adarabioyo is a good shout, no-brainer value on a free with his wages and signing bonus probably being very reasonable as well

He’s safe. He really isn’t your ball playing defender but we don’t need 2 of them. Martinez has that role covered. Bremer is your stopper, he wins the ball and gives it to a team mate. We need that player who reads the game and has the pace to offer that defensive stability. He is aerially dominant, aware to any danger, lightening quick, strong as an ox. He’s the perfect foil for Licha. They literally have all aspects of defending covered between them. Our new Rio and Vidic.

I think we need as many as we can get, simply because we've seen the drop off in our build up play since Martinez has been out. To add to that, if we only have one, then players will just set pressing traps.

I think, if you look at the top teams in Europe, they will have two starting ball playing centre backs and their back ups will also be good on the ball. Maybe Bremer is not that bad, and as you said, could form a good partnership with Martinez, but I look at Varane and how is struggles in the first phase, at times, and would personally like someone a lot more comfortable on the ball.

I’d say Bremer was better than Varane, been a few occasions I’ve seen him win the ball and then break forward with it, it’s just not fully his style like Todibo, even though he’s no slouch with that aspect. But we do need more than just Bremer. If Todibo and Bremer were available for 50mil each then we’d be stupid not to try and bring both in. Them 2 coming in for Maguire and Lindelof would be a massive upgrade

Personally I’d like to see us get Adarabioyo on a free plus a Todibo or Diomande this summer. I really like Hato too whose contract runs out next summer but I expect him to extend with Ajax and stay at least another year. If he extends we can target him next summer. Arsenal are tracking him though so if he is available this summer we should reprioritise.

The other LCB I like is Lucumi who would be a cheaper option with the right attributes.

Is it just me or does he remind of a young Varane? Even they way the sprint the first 5-10 meters.

I would go for him over Bremer.

A Lucky Scout kiss of death is all I need to unwatch this thread. I go by his recommendations.
He's not made his final decision yet, could always do a 180.

It looks like we have now many options to target. It depends on who leave in the summer, i would target at least one on the cusp of stepping up like Todibo (CB age 24-27) and then younger ones. They needs to be good enough on the ball, strong, athletics, can cover vast areas, be good 1vs1. These are the qualities we need if we want to play more possession or variant of it and has high lines.

I dont know how many CBs will we need come summer. But if all of Varane, Maguire and Lindelof leave then we can try for 3 CBs with 1 in the Todibo age bracket, 1 in Branthwaite, and free on like Tosin. We should overhaul our defense this summer if opportunity present itselft. Build the fundamental of the team first then take next step for the MF.

Varane is leaving, Evans is ancient, Lindelof and Maguire aren't good enough and there's question marks around Martinez. I'd say sell Lindelof and Maguire, add Adarabioyo and Mario Hermoso on a free and break the bank of Braithwaite

I hope we dont replace medioker with medioker. Tosin is not an improvement on Maguire/Lindeløf. Maybe Hermoso is (really not sure), but dont make much sense with anothet left footed CB in a mix with Martinez, Branthwaite and even Shaw.

If we get rid of Varane, and manage to sell Maguire and Lindelof, there should be funds to sign better players than Tosin and Hermoso in addition to Branthwaite.

Having Maguire as a squad player is unsustainable. His salary is just too high. Having hermoso and Tosin as cover will drive the wage bill down, it will allow us to invest the money generated by sales elsewhere and it will provide us ample cover (hermoso can play as LB, a position that's always plagued with injuries). Also note that players can surprise us. Evans is a clear example to that

In the very unlikely event that we are capable of finding a buyer for Shaw then I'd sell him as well.He was always injury prone and things will only get worse with age

Tosin and Lloyd Kelly are two free options we should have on our list.

Is there really a need to do that to such a huge degree? I mean, there is barely an experienced, proven, quality CB left. Probably just Martinez and with his injury record the past year, that would be a worry.

Replacing Varane with Branthwaite and Maguire with someone in the mould of Bremer/Todibo would also bring down overall cost. Selling Lindelof and replacing him with someone like Hermoso would be like for like.

In midfield offloading Donny (and not signing Amrabat) should give room for a new midfielder. That would leave us with Casemiro/new, Mainoo/McT and Bruno/Mount + Eriksen.

Upfront we should also be able to stay cost neutruel by replacing Greenwood and Martial with a striker.

If we sell aswell Sancho there should be further room to invest in the attack. Maybe in someone flexible like Eze who could play both in attack and midfield?

Yes, we will likely have to take a hit/make impairment on players like Sancho and Donny. But we will also make profit on players with book value = zero (Maguire, Lindelof, Mejbri, Greenwood, Pellistri).

Why would you 'break the bank' for someone who will inevitably be back up to Martinez, as they're both left footed?

For me, if we're going to break the bank, go and test Benfica's resolve for Antonio Silva.

or a top LB like Theo Hernandez, who would instantly improve our left flank.

Stam and Johnsen were both Right footed. Same as pique and puyol. Ideally we don't have that but it's not a tragedy if we don't.

Money will be a huge issue next summer as many players will leave without us making any significant profit out of them. United need to be smart with it's resources especially in terms of squad players

I'll be very surprised if we can get rid of Donny + we need to brace ourselves of losing our massively on Maguire, Sancho and co. That on top of replacing varane and martial who will on a free + bringing decent options for LB

I know it might sound so skint but the free transfer market is an opportunity if used wisely. Inter reached the CL finals by relying heavily on it

Exactly. I would personally go for Estupiñán or Ait Nouri, but a left back is needed.

Our priorities in the summer should be:

RCB
LB
CDM (Deep Lying-Playmaker)
ST (Who can play on the wing)

The book value of Maguire is zero this summer. It is very unlikely we will lose anything on him. In fact, we could sell him for £15 mill (half of what WHU offered) and pay him £5 mill and still make a profit of £10 mill. That would probably ensure that we covered the difference between Maguire salary at MUFC and WHU.

We will probably have to cover part of Sancho wages to make him leave (probably a similar amount to the profit from a Maguire-sale). But his book value is not much more than £30 mill. A similar fee to what Dortmund paid for someone liker Haller.

My guess is that we manage to sell both Sancho and Maguire we will not lose much. One will give a profit. The other a loss. In sum, not that bad. And two players, who this season have a cost of £30 mill in wages and £30 mill in depreciations will be off our books.

I just think in this day and age, with emphasis being on building from the back, ten Hag would preferably want that balance at the back, which he has quite openly spoken about before. However, as you said, it wouldn't be a tragedy.

By position on the field, Branthwaite is deployed as a left-footed centre half, but a former coach claims him to be right-footed instead. So which is it?

“I am left-footed, but I’ve got a five-star weak foot on the new FIFA!” he says with a humble but beaming smile as if to hint there is some truth to the claim. As the topic is pushed further, it’s clear he is comfortable on both sides. “If I’m hitting a long pass, I’ll go with my left; short passes with my right.”
