Was great again today when he came on. His overall play has improved a ridiculous amount. It used to be that once he got the ball to feet outside the box, you could be sure he'd lose the ball, but now he's dribbling around defenders and giving good passes out to the wings.

I agree with this regarding the last two games. His buildup play has been superb in both. He's started shifting the ball and changing direction really well.

Should never have been dropped. The problem is in the wide areas. We made Van Persie and Rooney look bad for 60 minutes today. Its not Chicharito's fault that he went two games without scoring. Its not as if the midfield was making tons of chances for him that he was missing. If you put it on a plate for him as Ando did today he gobbles it up and his all around game has improved loads I loved his little run to lay it off for Wazza. We should be playing 4-3-3 and starting him with Van Persie and Rooney until/unless the wingers get their groove back. If we make chances for Chicharo he'll score.

Lovely goal.

His movement and energy are superb and his all-round play continues to improve.

And yet no one noticed this against Galatasaray? Strange.

Yeah he's a different player. You could see glimpses of a better all-round game when he played for Mexico - there was a clear difference between his build-up play for us in his first season and for Mexico in the Gold Cup that summer - but he's come on leaps and bounds since then. Never doubted he would though, with an attitude like that he was always going to make huge strides forward. Particularly given how quickly he went from almost quitting football to being a national and club hero. In other words...

He's played 118 games in the past two seasons with very little rest in the summer, all the while adapting to a new country as well as becoming a mini-hero at United and the key player for his national side - that's a lot to deal with for someone who's just 23. The biggest change isn't even him moving to a new country/league/team, it's him going from being essentially a semi-professional footballer to something of a mini-superstar in the space of 18 months or so. He'd made less than 30 appearances in his professional career by the time he turned 21, he's started more games than that in this season alone. At some point his meteoric rise was going to slow down and that was when we were going to find out about him. Every young player has to deal with being found out to some degree after a year or two and then adapt their game to compensate, doing it successfully is what makes them top players. He's got a great attitude with the right people supporting him and he's clearly got talent so I wouldn't lose faith in him making that first choice striker spot his own.

The difference between his performance last week and this performance last year against Norwich is incredible.

He's a far better sub than starter.

Seems to be the case. Funny how the signing of a new striker to push him down the pecking order has ended up being of major benefit to him.

Dead right.

I did. I just didn't comment. Though his little run down the right touchline midweek was very impressive.

One of the many reasons I think Chico should be starting is his improved build up play. I think he dovetails well with Robin and Rooney. Not just on the aerial knockdowns to them that he wins but increasingly he's being seen on the touchline allowing both to drift inside of him and trying to play them in.

His impact can't be underestimated.

I agree. His cameo today was more than enough for me to see him start. The question is what kind of team are we putting behind him? If we're not going to play a team that's going to allow our forward players to express themselves, how are we going to expect to see good performances from players like Chico when he starts?

Who knows? More than likely next time Chico starts it will be ahead of a sluggish out of form midfield and he'll get subbed after an hour and blamed for having a 'quiet game'.

He's very effective as a sub.. but I dont think he cant start... Everyone was poor against Norwich and other than that he usually starts in weakened teams.

Give him a run of games as a starter and he'll do just fine. But we have Rooney and van Persie, so that is unlikely to happen.

Still think at this stage of his career he is better off as a sub. His pace and energy are hard to deal with for tiring defenders. Maybe in a few years he will mature enough to play the 90 minutes with the same effectiveness, but right now he is a perfect weapon to bring off the bench and get goals. Great pass by Anderson too though, set him up perfectly.

Strange interpretation.

He had two lack lustre starts and then looks a diamond from the bench. Have you never thought to ask why? I would say that it is because he much more effective at terrorising tired defences, with his movement and energy, when the defenders tiredness is affording him more space.

As with QPR in the first half this afternoon, a fresh team keeps it positional discipline and constantly get tight to their man. In this situation I do not feel that Hernendez's touch is good enough for him to be as effective. When the defenders do get tired, he is also tired and is unable to take advantage in the way that he does when he comes from the bench.

I genuinely don't understand this idea that Chicharito is ineffective as a starter. He seemed to have a massive impact 36 seconds into a title deciding match on May 8th 2011 against Chelsea if I recall correctly. That wasn't the only time he's looked strong as a starter either. We're not talking about a player who has no history with this club. He's started more than a few matches for us and played well throughout them e.g. his first proper start away at Stoke in 2010. His first start last season against Bolton we won 5-0 and he turned Cahill inside out scoring twice.

Chicharito's influence is not decided by whether he starts but by what's behind him. Start Chico ahead of Giggs, Carrick, Young and Valencia on their worst day and of course he'll have no impact. He's not Messi he's not going to drop back into midfield and make it happen for himself if the service isn't coming. But if you put him in the first XI with midfielders who can feed him the ball like Anderson or Cleverley he'll score goals. He's proved that more than enough times during the past 2 and something seasons.

nice finish. it is always good when you have someone like him on the bench when you kind of need goals in the second half.

He was good against Galatasaray as a starter. I'd like to see a video compilation of his performance in that game.

Then I'm not sure where you've been. His touch has been fine this season. His overall play is much better. Any striker is going to struggle when you a put an ineffective team behind them. Do you disagree?

Not good as a starter? The man barely needs a warm up!

If we find ourselves in a CL semifinal v Real or Barca, I fully expect Fergie to start Chicharito. Until then, I have no objection at all to the occasional start punctuated with incredible performances off the bench.

We saw it before with Ole. It was the justification for him not starting, Statistics which showed how influential he was when he started were ignored. There was very little honesty around at the time - it was always, "he's only any good as a sub", which was rubbish. The truth was that Yorke and Cole were a great strike force and there was no need to disrupt that... claiming Ole was only any good as a sub. was thrown in there to double justify his exclusion.

Now Hernandez isn't getting picked to start and we've got the same argument, which isn't fair, and this time round, there aren't two strikers ahead of him, who can't be split up.

True.

Its funny their careers seem to be following similar trajectories. Ole's first season was immense and his goal return took us over the line in 1997, even more than Chico's perhaps cos Ole was our top scorer. Second season Ole suffered badly from injury as did Chico. Third season Ole had to play second fiddle to the Yorke-Cole partnership but he did win us the Champions League. We can only hope Chico does the same thing...

It wasn't til what 2001/2 when Ole emerged as Ruud's first choice strike partner that he got the run in the side he had probably earned years before but their success up front was overshadowed by Arsenal winning the double. Then we changed tactics, then Ole's knee went. Hopefully that part of Solksjaer's career isn't mirrored by Chico and he can have more sunny uplands to his time at Old Trafford. As you say, on form, he deserves it.

Indeed. It's comical.

It's always reassuring when you need a goal that you can look tothe bench and see Hernadez getting ready to come on. He deserves to start more but it's easy to argue that he benefits the team better as a sub. I think what he gives us even if he isn't playing well is the fear he instils in other teams can create so much space for Rooney and Van Persie to get more involved in the game. Fergie is getting the balance right with his forwards.

Absolutely.

Whilst I think he deserves a start, there's no doubting the importance of him coming off the bench.

I dunno what to make of Hernandez atm, he's showing more confidence/ability on the ball and has a great goal eye but I'm not sure if I'd start him regularly. Although his touch has improved I still don't think his link up is the same standard as the other 3 strikers and it does inhibit moves at times but also I'm not sure how effective he is when we have these slow starts against organized teams. As a sub he does seem to have more impact and it's not just due to him and his style but also I think our mentality when we would need to bring him in. After we concede we usually come alive and start playing more and the opposition usually recognize this and so become more conservative and back off. That allows Hernandez to become almost a spare man as we can push up so high. Where as when he starts and we're not playing well, the opposition stifle our attacks more and he can't get involved as much, nor get as much space.

As long as he scores he deserves to be in contention to start but long term I think he'll continue to be more of an impact player.

Just gonna highlight this so I can point a few things out.

1) He has 9 goals so far, and is only behind RVP in that respect. Rooney is on 3, albeit in a deeper role and Welbeck is on 1, playing as inside forward mostly.

2) His link up play has been brilliant so far, culminated in a wonderful counter attack where he backheeled a ball through Mbia's legs and set Evra free on the left. He has 3 assists, and is ahead of Welbeck in that regard. Welbeck's link up is vastly overrated at times on here. On current showing Hernandez is superior in every way, including, yes, link up

He's a far better sub than starter.

Agree with this. A beast off the bench but I struggle to trust him just yet as a starter. That is just a personal view though and am placing it down to some of his performances from last season which are almost irrelevant now.

Having said that, if he keeps scoring you can't just justify having him on the bench. At this moment he along with Anderson deserves to start against West Ham.

I don't think it's entirely fair to call him a better sub than a starter. The games he starts usually consists of rotatees and older players, and he gets close to feck all service.

Now that RVP has arrived, he and Rooney will start most games, which IMO means that Hernandez suits the team's needs better as a sub. By the way, playing 4 strikers against 4 QPR centre backs, like happened in the second half, was surreal.

His stats are impressive but it's the same as dzeko for me, doing the business no doubt but they get more from tevez. His link up hasn't been brilliant for me, certainly showed improvement and some great moments but still not enough for me, against Norwich although he had little to work with when the ball did come to him it was always going back. Also welbeck and rooney having to play wide particularly at times hasn't helped their goals tally though both could be playing better.

Like I said whilst he is in this form he deserves to be in starting contention but long term I don't see him being part of the first 11. Particularly when the likes of kagawa, valances and nani hit form. If he starts he might get a goal but if they start and are in form I think we'll look a much better team.

I think it depends on the players around him. I'm glad one year when he was starting against Chelsea at OT as I remember him scoring a big goal. I think his record off the bench is good and he may well be a better player off the bench, but he needs the players around him - at whatever stage of the game, to play with tempo, desire because chances will come.

I know this is harsh on him, as his performances warrant him a start. But I just feel more confident when he's on the bench, knowing that inevitably when we go behind we have someone with such an exceptional eye for goal to bring on.
