It's also the fact that after 20 goals last year, defenders know they can't let the Little Pea alone to get in behind them, so they're compensating, but doing is going to open up space in front of Rooney in his midfield role.

Javier Hernandez: My amazing life at United - Official Manchester United Website

Chicha: Life is amazing

In part two, Javier Hernandez talks to Inside United and ManUtd.com about his love for Manchester United, competition for starting berths and training in the snow.

Just how much are you enjoying life at United?

It’s unbelievable. In some ways I’m still getting used to wearing this shirt and being around these incredible players, seeing my name on a Manchester United teamsheet... it’s amazing. Some days I wake up and I just can’t believe it. I’m living in this great country, playing for the best club in the world in the best league in the world. I’m so thankful for that.

It’s now even harder to win a spot in the Reds’ attack with Danny Welbeck, Mame Biram Diouf and Kiko Macheda all back in the United squad. How do you deal with the competition?

It’s not a problem. I’ve come to learn that there will always be competition, at any club. You look around on the training pitch and there are almost 30 players, but only 11 can start a game. So it’s tough. You’ll always have disappointments. It helps you improve, though. On the training ground everybody wants to do their best, they want to prove what they can do and earn a spot in the team.

Did you know much about Welbeck before the start of this season?

Yes, I’d seen him play quite a few times, and not only last year when he was on loan at Sunderland. I remember when I was in Mexico and I was watching Manchester United on television – Danny was just starting to come into the team and be given a few chances. You could see he had a lot of potential then, and was improving all the time. He was a good prospect then and now he’s even better. He’s had a great start to the season.

You haven’t scored from outside the area for United yet – though we know you can score those goals from your time at Chivas! What are the chances that you’ll fire one in from long-range this season?
You never know! I think part of the reason I haven’t done that yet is because of the instructions I receive from Sir Alex. My job is to play very high, right on the last man. To be honest I don’t mind how I score goals – whether or not you score from one metre or from the halfway line, it counts the same. A goal is a goal.

You’ve been a very busy footballer in the last few seasons, playing in summer international tournaments as well as the regular season. Do you ever worry about doing too much, or are you happy you get enough rest?

No, not at all. I love to play football. If somebody wants me to play in outer space then I’ll do it! I’d be happy to. Sometimes you can look at the schedule for Manchester United and for the national team and think, “Wow, this is a lot.” But I grew up wanting to play football and now I’m lucky it’s my job. I love it.

Sometimes players from the warmer countries can’t get used to the climate in England. Are you ready for your second Manchester winter?

It was very different! Very cold. I’d never seen a winter like that anywhere. It was the coldest one for many years. And maybe it felt even colder for me because I spent something like 22 winters in Mexico and a winter in Mexico isn’t like winter at all. It never snows! Training in the snow was a bit of a challenge, but it was all new to me so I enjoyed it.

Winning the 19th league title last season was a huge achievement for United. Can this squad lift the trophy again?

I’m sure we can do it. We have a lot of young players who are hungry to do well, and that helps inspire the rest of the squad. They may have been here for many years and won a lot of trophies, but they still have a lot of desire. I think we have a good mix of youth and experience, and that will be very important for us.

Thank Eric for Chicha. :)

Off the top of my head that's now 13 out of 18 league goals coming away from home. That really can't be undestimated.

Not that great, but got the winner and held up the ball well at times, as well as working hard to press, so can't complain too much, not to mention had a much better game than Rooney.

No way. Ruud had a lot more to his game.

Hernandez is a younger and fitter version of Michael Owen.

umm...in fairness Owen in his prime (early youth) was a real menace on the ball. Hernandez has the pace Owen had, but his close control when he's running with the ball and his actual dribbling and ability to beat the man isn't great. That said I think his movement is better and he's got that un-trainable ability to get into the right position and score important game winners.

Aside from the goal he was pretty disappointing. He made a mess of quite a few chances due too bad touches. Oh well, he got the winner so I can't complain too much.

His feet weren't really right for the goal so it could have been an embarrasing miss all too easily. Nice little finish in the end.

I'm torn between him and Welbeck at the minute. Hernandez is much more likely to get you a goal, but Welbecks all round play is so much better. Aside from goals, Hernandez doesnt really contribute much if that makes any sense. His first touch needs a lot of work imo and he is very easily bullied off the ball.

Welbeck should be starting right now and Hernandez as an impact player.

We don't have the creativity for Hernandez to truely benefit right now and Welbeck actually adds to that creativity. It's a no brainer for me. Love the little man, but right now it's Welbeck to start ahead of him.

I think that's fair. Hernandez is great coming off the bench. Only thing is you miss out on opportunities like today when you do that. He has this knack of bailing us out when we go away. I'm guessing that's why Fergie also starts him.

apart from the goal, hernandez was quite dissapointing..i will still have him over welbeck for these away games however..i'm not sure about this but i think he scores most of his united goals away from old trafford.

Best box striker in the game right now and his hold up play is improving, he's winning free kicks when he receives the ball with his back to goal as well, developing nicely overall.

:wenger:

He scored the winner in a fecking awkward away game. If he didn't we would have been 8 points behind those blue cnuts, let's get some perspective here.

He could volley one in off his bell-end and it wouldn't matter. He does a very effective and valuable job.

The defense deserves as much credit for making sure the only goal was the game winner.

Has to be nice as a striker to know there's a good chance the opposition won't score, you know your goals will matter.

Hernandez's situation is a bit similar to Andy Cole's. At this point, he only shows glimpses of what's to come. In two years, he's going to be much more well-rounded and more dangerous because of it. You can tell his instructions are to hug on the shoulder of the last defender.

It frustrates me at times. I feel he could drop back and contribute more but I guess it's step by step with him.

He scores but, he definitely needs to work on his timing of runs a lot better and avoid offsides better, we lose a lot of momentum because of it. There is nothing wrong with saying he was poor even if he scored an important goal. Ando scored an important goal recently but, that didn't discount that he had been mediocre before that.

I think one of the things that stops Chicha from being more involved in games is the mandate for him to stick to try stay on the shoulder of the last defender, so doesn't get to be more a part of the build up play. Hopefully once he develops his game, boss will give him more freedom.

Am fine with him staying right on the last defender's shoulder for now. till he develops his overall game more, its better he does exactly that. his knack of scoring goals is incredible really.

how i wish we utilized him better. his runs cry out for through balls down the middle..

I'm not torn, the amount of points, especially away from home that Hernandez wins us means he's first choice, and rightly so, goals win football matches and Hernandez is full of them.

Wellbeck has only had a couple of games with this brilliant all round play you speak of, and it usually comes after scoring a goal to raise his confidence, he's also had a good few games where his touch is off and he offers nothing (Sunderland at home for example), when Hernandez touch is off he still offers you that threat.

At the top level it's a bit of a trade off if you contribute little else see Inzaghi, Defoe et al.

I think he's a much more consistent goalscorer than Defoe and offers way more in the build up than Inzaghi though.

Away from home he's vital as teams push up a bit. Gives him space to make his run in behind.

He's much more consistent than Defoe, Defoe is a bizarre inclusion.

As for Filippo:
Filippo Inzaghi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

That's some honours list, being an Arsenal fan yourself you probably don't care much for honors. There's been a good few years where you were crying out for an Inzaghi to lead you to honours.

He's much more consistent than Defoe, Defoe is a bizarre inclusion..
He looks like a more consistent goalscorer than Defoe, the point was he adds about as much to team play. Bringing Arsenal into the argument invites an invidious comparison with RvP, an all-round footballer who is scoring freely.

However, yesterday the ref didn't buy much. There were a few really bad behind challenges where he didn't get free kicks for...

Also for a striker to me with his pace he should learn how to shift his pace... Learn from pato where he just taps the ball and run when the defender tries to get behind u....

Can't agree with that. Welbeck was quality against City and, if I remember right, Everton too. Two games that he didn't score in.

It's really no contest. Chicharito is first choice by far to partner Rooney or any other forward we have. He will also eventually learn to be a very good lone striker.

That's a strange statement to make when it has been pretty obvious that Welbeck seems to have been ahead in the pecking order so far. When it comes to playing the big teams I think Welbeck is going to be preferred and Hernandez will be seen as our threat from the bench should we need a goal.

His performance aside from the goal was poor but some blame also has to be shifted on Nani, Rooney etc who equally poor. He's a player who thrives on service and he didn't got enough that after the first goal and apart that Rooney pass where his touch was awful.
