Jarrad Branthwaite

He's had a poor start to the season but he's barely been 100% fit yet. Been stop start, our manager is complete guff and club have checked out. Better to reassess when he's back to full fitness and we change manager.
Not on reaction-caf

Thought he had some good moments honestly, I think he would be good in our squad and system as the central defender

Amorim called him the trigger during his press conference but you'll have people on here claiming he's good on the ball     This guy literally gifted us the win today. As i've mentioned before, anybody who sanctions paying over £35m for this guy should immediately be fired.

He’s Everton’s John Stones and will go on to be just as good. I know he made mistakes today but plays in the mould of Stones.

Or he helped his future employers gain a needed 3 points.

You choice how you want to see it.

Stones was more composed on the ball and had a stronger and varied passing range but I believe Branthwaite to be a better out and out defender.

I think Branthwaite will become a good player though. He's had a rough time of it with Dyche and of course with injuries.
He may need to be managed by a more progressive coach though.

Time to shut this thread down probably.

He'll either stay there for many years, or be sold to a Bournemouth or West Ham if they do go down.

It’s an interesting one because the club clearly did so much due diligence and legwork on Branthwaite last summer and I’m sure he’s still very high up the list for options — Evans will retire; Maguire has a year left; Lindelof will surely go at some point — so we do need another CB. I just doubt Amorim fancies him as much as the club do.

It’s clear already that Amorim will be using Shaw as a left sided centre back rather than a left wing back so with Shaw and Martinez we’re good for that position, as I said before Amorim even started I think as a left sided centre back we’ll see far less stress put on Shaw’s body than we would if he was playing as a wing back.

I'm not so sure considering Shaw's fitness record, regardless of how much stress there is.

This guy makes de Ligt look like Usain Bolt. Far too slow for a 70mill tagged centre back.

Currently he is far off the player Everton think he is.

Already a United legend though, basically did his best to play for us today

He is a quality player - but he is a young, inexperienced player just back from injury - playing for a side that is garbage.

Insane that they want that money for him. Would he be from any other country he would be a 15million player. He is not bad but he isnt very good either. Bang average.
This is the corollary to that old BS that people like to spout in transfer threads about English players: "if his name was Juan Sanchez instead of John Smith we'd all be desperate to sign him and he'd be worth £50 million more".

Well in some cases, if his name was Jaroslav Branovic instead of Jarrad Branthwaite, he'd be worth £50 million less.

Remember when they over hyped him as a generational talent so that they can wriggle out 80m from us? 50m is the absolute max I hoped we go for consider he's English, relatively young and had a decent season last year. 80m was bonkers and I am glad our new leadership team walked away.

He is a decent talent same as Guehi but I don't see both of them being worth 80m.

He's nothing special. If this guy wasn’t left footed and English we wouldn’t even be remotely interested.

That was quite poor. It wasn't good enough for Everton let alone anyone else. He should stick with them for a year or two, he's not ready for a 60m+ transfer with performances like that in his locker. Just casual and looked like he checked out fairly early on.

Everton didn’t think he was worth £80m, they thought we’d get desperate and overpay.

Martinez's injury record isnt great either.
The problem Shaw has had the last few years for us was our complete over reliance on him as 1. Rashford is even more awful without a quality left footed player behind him and 2. The gulf in quality when Shaw is fit to every other left back we’ve had since he joined the club, alternating with Martinez should at least help Shaw’s availability from not having a massive over reliance on him playing every week when fit.

With Martinez last season was an anomaly for him as far as fitness goes and the two big injuries he had could have happened to anyone just like we’d seen with metatarsal injuries to Beckham and Rooney for us whilst the second was a freak injury when shielding the ball out and the other player going over him, he’s far from injury prone.

He’s Everton’s John Stones and will go on to be just as good. I know he made mistakes today but plays in the mould of Stones.
The only thing they have in common is that they're centre backs who started out at Everton.

I still think he's very talented as a box defender and suits this system far better than Martinez ever will. Definitely should go back in for him if the price is right.

His clumsiness on the ball would definitely be scrutinized like Maguire in the media if he does join us

I don't think he will ever be good enough in possession to play LCB under Amorim, maybe in CCB where the progression responsibilities are not as crucial.

I think people are profiling him wrong thinking he's a competition to Licha/Shaw on the left, his traits should make him compete with De Ligt/Maguire in the center.

He's not really good enough but there's also a weird bitterness from our fanbase towards him because he didn't force a move to us in the summer I guess. The lad didn't do a lot wrong today, he's just quite clumsy on the ball. He reminds me of Smalling.

He would be much more useful to us than both Martínez and De Ligt, btw. In this game alone that's been evident, despite his mistake for our 2nd goal. I swear football fans are blind man
Hopefully his price will drop now and Ruben can have his say if he wants him next season.

Defensively, he's definitely better than what he showed today, but he's just not good enough on the ball for a top top club, nevermind the fee Everton want for him.

Well yes, because he's 22.

I actually thought he was younger.

All the traits he already has, awkward and clumsy on the ball, slow to turn, average to poor passer…these won’t suddenly become top class. It was the same when we signed Maguire at 26 and everyone tried to convince themselves he would suddenly iron out all those deficiencies.

Brainthwaite is what he is. A pretty standard British centre back playing for a lower half PL team. Think Tawkowski, Mings, Dawson etc etc He will have a good PL career but not at a top club. He just doesn’t have the technical ability.

As for the Stones comparison above. Apart from the fact they’re both centre backs who happened to play for Everton, they’re nothing alike. Stones is a fantastic footballer, who has regularly played in midfield for City. They’re on a completely different planet technique wise.

If it's true that he was the trigger for United to press then surely that tells you what Amorim thinks of his ability on the ball.

I think he's a very good defender but our defence isn't the issue, we have the most clean sheets in the premier league and only Liverpool have conceded less.

With funds limited we just can't prioritize a defender whose not a LB.

Money needs to be invested on getting a high quality left winger/LB. After these two positions we look at RW then CM.

Ashworth should just tell his agent United want to sign him but can't atm because of FFP, as long as he doesn't sign a new deal with Everton then he becomes more affordable the less time on his contract anyway.

£80m price tag :lol:.. Yep jog on Everton.

I remember Everton fans saying... pay up, and got really upset that United didn't and signed a player twice as good at half the price.

One noticeable thing about him is he’s absolutely massive. Was sat right by the touchline yesterday and he towered over everyone.

He didn’t look good individually, though they were horrendous collectively.

I can’t remember what United’s top offer was, but if they get relegated they’ll probably regret not taking it as his stock along with every Everton player, does appear to be tumbling.

We need Branthwaite's build and speed with Martinez passing and composure on the ball. Not sure who that is. Im a bit baffled as to why our new sporting director etc are so in love with him though. Maybe they know more than us. He is playing for Everton and he's only 22 so maybe his passing is better than it seems. I think when he was on loan at PSV his passing was good.

Does anyone remember what United Redcafe fans were saying about John Stone before he went to city

This is reminding me of exactly that!

Number 1 thing - Redcafe fans including me know f all about football.

All these fans calling Stones as this amazing player who was brilliant on the ball are looking at his career backwards because he shut everyone up at City and now have respect for him as an up and coming Everton youngster.

Everyone was calling him overrated and average and many were glad we were not in for him back ten years ago

Agree, I thought the rumours would die ooff when Amorim came in but for some weird reason they ramped up again. I imagine it’s baseless media talk and/or agent touting.

I don’t remember many saying he was over rated, over priced maybe. Including me.

Turned out to be better than I thought (and price was a bargain in hindsight) but also think he looked better at Everton/at a young age than Branthwaite does.

Still a good player and one with a very high ceiling.

His profile is still exactly what we are looking for.

Currently proven right to not shell out the £75m in the summer - lets see what next summer brings!
