Jarrad Branthwaite

Yes, Mazraoui is great, but we didn't dodge any bullets or anything like that by going for De Ligt over Branthwaite.
We didn’t, but you responded in turn with equal hyperbole by saying he would be “much more useful” than two of our best CBs.

It's not hyperbole. We need at least 4 CBs who can eat up space quickly and we only have one in Yoro.
Not buying Branthwaite for 80m is 100% dodging a bullet.

He's not worth 80m, but Branthwaite for 55-60m would've been at least as good of a deal as De Ligt was for 38m, even long-term, despite me thinking 38m for the Dutchman will turn out to be a bargain eventually. And short-term, it would've been a much better deal for the reasons I've already pointed out.

It wasnt an own goal - it was 100% going in with or without Brantwaithe.

Anyway, if he was a Ten Hag player (psv loan spell) more than an Ineos player then avoiding him maybe the right thing
I haven’t seen a decent angle which suggests Pickford was or wasn’t going to save it

Worth pointing out that Branthwaite is a good player. Not sure we need to pursue him any further given that both Martinez and Shaw can play that exact role. Shaw being the best of them all in there by some distance.

Martinez and De Ligt aren’t even close to being the problem on the transition. Watch the space behind Casemiro some more. You’re a fine one to argue about folk being blind.

And who did we sign to solve that issue? Ugarte, another player who cannot cover big spaces quickly.

Poor for the 3rd goal too. By no means his "fault" but sucked into midfield and didn't win the ball, which opened up the space behind.

Is there a single football team in the world who has four of these?

The 3 best teams in the league all have more than us despite playing with back 4s.

We might not need 4 out and out CBs for this, so Shaw could count as one. Mazraoui arguably too. Maybe Dalot could fill in there too. But we need at least 1 addition there next summer and every time Martínez plays LCB next to De Ligt, Evans, or Maguire, we will be vulnerable to these quick breaks.

£80m

And to think Everton fans were getting pressed when we offered about £55m. Would've been a massive waste.

Good player, having a mare.

I don't watch a lot of football outside of United these days, but I've never seen him actually play well. Not saying he's always been bad (though he was against us last season too) but I've never seen anything more that a pretty ordinary centre back.

Dodging a bullet infers a scenario where we had to react to save ourselves.

Not buying Branthwaite is more like not deciding to upgrade your PS5 Slim to PS5 pro because you don't really play it enough to justify owning it in the first place, never mind spending money on a small upgrade.

I think he has some good attributes you can see why there's interest in him from good clubs. But he was never a 70 million pound player.
If you can get him under 40 mil you've got a decent deal.

Terrible match. He's been back a few matches now so shouldnt be too rusty. Deflected the ball into his own goal and lost the ball to Amad for the 2nd

Every time I have watched him he seemed like a younger version of bad Maguire. Seen nothing to change my mind.

Could be decent at 40 million + addons, but I'd look elsewhere first. And not pay more than that.

You can see pretty clearly in the from-behind clip that he'd be too late, in my opinion. At least it very much looks that way.

In any case, as long as the shot's on goal, it's not an own goal.

I'm sure no one will pay Everton's asking price for him
Not going to judge him after this game, but imagine the pressure at United if he had these kind of performance

He is a lot like Maguire.

Gonna be trolling the shite out of Everton fans on twitter after that howler of a performance from him. I wouldn't normally but after the shite they were chatting to us in the summer because our reported interest in him they deserve a little back.

He would be much more useful to us than both Martínez and De Ligt, btw. In this game alone that's been evident, despite his mistake for our 2nd goal. I swear football fans are blind man
I thought his distribution was really poor at times. Doesn’t seem to fit the bill for what we’re looking for.

He's not worth 80m, but Branthwaite for 55-60m

Please stop... he has shown nothing to be worth more than 20m. Apart from his speed he has no strong points, clumsy, bad with the ball and to top that with making stupid mistakes in dangerous positrons. 60 m players are star defenders.

I don't rate this guy much, personally. Forget 80m, not even worth 40m.

Money is going to be tight, and we can't afford to make any more costly mistakes.
