January Transfer Window

Can't really argue with any of that, except perhaps Welbeck being loaned. Although it probably wouldn't be the worst thing for him, but we have injuries in attack so now wouldn't work.

If we're going to use a lone striker system then Rooney, Hernandez and RVP would suffice. Welbeck just need to polish his finishing skills and he won't be doing that as a squad player. Not to forget that we may well end up losing one between Rooney and RVP next season which means that we need to see that as a priority..

He kinda reminds me of Kroos or a more extravagant version Herrara (in terms of natural skill on the ball). For I've seen him do his fair shift of defensive work in the past when it has been required by his team, which is rare amongst AM types.
Are we talking about rakitic or guarin here?? Guarin from what I've seen is a box to box player but not that special, whereas your description sounds like rakitic. Haven't seen that much of him though.

IMO we need any two midfielders out of (realistic options):
Pjanic, Rakitic, bender, gundogan, merchisio, schneiderlin, koke, Herrera, and then probably a few others I can't remember right now.

Also we need a left back in the summer since evra is off. The wingers and everyone else will improve with a proper midfield, but they will be better assessed in the summer, to see if we really need to strengthen elsewhere. I could see us also needing to sign a new striker and centre back as well. Wouldn't be surprised to see one of rvp or Rooney leave, and then Hernandez as well. Rio and Vidic are both out of contract in the summer as well as is evra and Fabio, so we might end up needing to sign basically 4 players just to replace the ones who leave, and then another 2 for midfield.

So just 11 days to go to badly needed open transfer window and these would be my guess for players we will need

Likely - Sneijder and Alberto Moreno as Luke Shaw will go to Chelsea
Small possibilities - Alex Texeira or Di Maria, Axel Witsel, Matic
And if we go for a central defender than Fabian Schar would be realistic as I don't think we will get Mangala

My mate from portugal says Bruma of Galatasary is the best player to come of portugal since CR7. He also hotly tips Carlos Mane to be the next big thing from Sporting along with William Carvalho and says Ivan Cavaleiro will do great things at Benfica too

I reckon we'll have all but got our january signings lined up already.

fecking hope so.

Woodward knows he bollocksed up, that's the biggest thing we muppets have going for us. He's like the partner who cheated in the summer and we're sat expecting a big-feck-off, bank-busting, apology christmas present. Rightfully so.

Baines could be back around about the time of the Jan window starting. If Oviedo keeps his place in the starting line-up then it will be looking likely that Baines is off.

Wasn't the story at the time that we bid like 15m for him, and Sporting didn't want to deal with us so sold him to Galatasary for quite a bit less?

Is baines injured?? I am sure he is actually, but would you prefer him over Oviedo or would you be happy for Baines to leave based on his (Oviedo's) performances of late, which have been very positive.

Fractured his toe in the derby.

Baines is obviously the better player and his set pieces and chance creation rate was a vital part of our side last year, but this year we have performed well in his absence and a below par season for him compared to the last. Coupled in with the fact that Oviedo has taken his chance in the side excellently and will definitely get more than he has during his time with us, i would say that if a good offer comes in for Baines i would happily take it (Couldn't imagine saying this at the beginning of the season). He's only getting older so his value will go down, plus Oviedo is fairly young!

we were unable to satisfactorily complete our transfer business in August and we were quite open about it. Moyes has also said that the team needs players.
Add to that the fact that Fellaini is out for the busiest part of the season. Carrick will just be returning.
If we have always planned to make up for missing out on getting another CM in august, with the injuries we have, we should have things wrapped up already so that the new CM is available right from the start of Jan. I seriously doubt that will happen though
Completing the signing right at the end of Jan will be quite stupid, especially when we can't afford to drop too many points in the next couple of months.

IN:
CM: Fellaini is more of a cover for carrick. probably not as good, but yeah. If we get a CM now, it will be someone who provides a lot of movement.
LB: Please!!! Will make us so much more of a threat from the left wing.
LW: This makes our squad really complete and strong.

Out:
Young
Anderson
Buttner

Loan Out:
Fabio: One last chance to get a consistent run of games at a decent team.
Zaha: With the winger coming in. kagawa and welbeck also playing on the wing sometimes, with the presence of valencia, nani and januzaj. I don't see him getting a chance.
This will be a great january. If we just get the CM and LB, I will still be happy.
Imagine this line up:
ddg
rafael---vida----evans--baines
-------carrick---gundogan----
---valencia--rooney-----rues--
----------rvp----------------

At the end of the season:
forwards: rooney rvp welbeck chicha
wings: new winger, valencia, januzaj, zaha and nani
Kagawa can be considered to be a part of either forwards or wingers. the decision of letting one of these players leave can be made at the end of the season.

I'm fairly sure we'll overpay and get Baines, which is relatively fine with me. A safe signing who'll improve our team.

I'm also sure most of our focus will be on cm, which makes me think we'll get by with the wingers we have for now.

As for who we'll go for in cm? Christ only knows. I'd like to be thinking along the lines of Koke and Gundogan, then I remember the fact that we put a bid in for Khedira on deadline day and I worry. We could go for any of the hundreds of cms we've been linked with and I wouldn't be shocked.

What I'm really looking for in this window are signs that we've learned from our mistakes in the summer. No ridiculously low valuations, no ridiculous targets, no leaking of every bid we're making, no panic. If we avoid those mistakes and still don't get a great cm, I won't be heartbroken. I'll at least have confidence we can do good business in the summer.

If we repeat those mistakes though then I'll be seriously pissed off. Our summer fiasco played a big role in our current situation as it hamstrung Moyes from the start. A repeat performance would be a disaster.

I would love it if you overpaid for Baines and got him. It would just cement the image of Moyes not only being extremely unimaginative in his targets (as with everyone else he's brought in), but also the fact that he needed two transfer windows to overpay for a pair of his old boys he initially valued at 28m in total.

And if he really is the only signing, so much the better.

I'm still not sure about Baines. People go on about him being the best left back in England, but I'd rather us sign someone who will help us play a more technical game as that's the direction in which I feel we need to move more towards.

There have to be better options than Baines at this point. Its as simple as that. Yes he's good but there are other good, young left backs

Getting Baines is now pointless. The ship has long since sailed. Better testing the water at Saints with £20m for Shaw.

I'm expecting you to get your wish - IF we do any business in January at all that is. Otherwise you'll have to wait for the summer. Regardless I'm sure it will happen.

Also I agree with the posters questioning who could be available for the central-midfield role we need so badly - the fact is that we've wasted so many seasons doing nothing in that area, whilst clubs like PSG and Monaco have since emerged as even more competition for talented players alongside the usual suspects. It seems the pool of appropriate players is even more shallow than ever. Add to that the uncertainty over the club's future prospects potentially affecting the attractiveness to the players we would look to bring in, and the usual position on paying competitive money, and I'm really not sure who can be recruited for central-midfield in January.

Liverpool seem to have developed the ability to sign somewhat unknown targets that add greatly to them and they're enjoying their best run since the mid-Benitez era - hopefully our scouts will surprise us with an inspired window.

If the rumours are true that we matched Madrid's bid for Bale it'll be interesting to see who we target in the coming windows. We are a top class midfielder, left back and left winger away from being up there with the top teams (on paper), in my opinion.

If it is true though then you have to wonder why we tried to bid so low for Fabregas. If it is true as well then really can't see how they could have an issue with say a £35m+ bid for someone like Gundogen.

Baines is almost 30? Okay that makes it a bit pointless.

Why? Sure him being 30 doesn't sound like a good thing but he doesn't really rely on pace the way most top fullbacks do so age won't affect him in the way it will them. He's got a good four years at his current level in my opinion. He can take corners too which would allow us to actually utilize an actual striker in the box to get on the end of set-pieces.

That was a bit strange, we must've been egged on by his agent or someone. And wasn't Gundogan injured during the transfer window?

We are not overflowing with pace anyhow, so don't know whether I'd like another not particularly quick player replacing one of the player who provides much needed speed to our game at times.

Well I'm sure there was a reason we went for him, I meant more our valuation, Bale isn't 4 times the player Fabregas is and would certainly do more for our team so the difference in valuation would seem odd. For Gundogen I meant going forward, if we're willing to spend 85m plus on Bale then trying probably less than half that on a top cm seems more than reasonable.

I just don't want us playing that way. I want us to try and replace Evra with someone like Evra if we can, with that class on the ball.

The sad thing is, after signing Fellaini its probably unlikely we will go for yet another central midfielder in Jan (not that there are any good ones available). Most people tipping for Baines to join us might be right.

Would be nice to get another right back in too. Someone to cover for Rafael.

lol well we do have his twin, though he's been completely frozen out, worse than zaha which is saying something. Obviously you have to give them time etc but if we get to the end of jan and have spent likely over £40m on Baines and Fellaini since Moyes too over, well I dunno, doesn't feel like the best use of £40m.

Bale also had superstar marketing appeal that could have been cashed in on for the next ten years. Made potentially very good financial sense, even at £85m.

Gutted we missed on him. Think it shows that even if we cough up market rate fees and wages (which we haven't for a while, not at the top end that's for sure) we will still struggle to attract the top, top talents when in competition with a handful of seemingly mo desirable clubs.

I think we definitely have a good amount of money that can be invested, probably around £100m net would be allowed. However, it will be a one-off and then funds would normalize way lower you would expect. So if Moyes blows it on more shit like Fellaini we could really fall behind. Think Liverpool a few years ago.

Fingers crossed we choose good targets and don't waste money on players like Baines who is not at the right age for us.

Take whatever we can for Anderson and Buttner or Fabio. I'm starting to think Ashley Young may be worth keeping hold of a while to see if his form can improve/maintain. My ideal for LB would be Shaw, but would be quite happy with Baines as he is massively productive in the last third. I wouldn't be surpised to see Kagawa leave if someone made a half decent offer for him. Doubt Moyes has him in his plans, which is a shame.
I think it would be suicidal to not get in a central midfielder. There must be dozens out there that can improve our midfield and would be available in January, but as Moyes has pointed out today, it looks like he has a list and is willing to wait until they are available. My ideal would be Fabregas as I've not really seen much of the other names being banded around to comment on. Fabregas is just a class, class player but surely just a pipe dream to come to United.
Come on Moyes.

I probably wouldn't go for Baines either due to his age and what he'd cost, but he'd arguably be a signing that will afford Moyes the time to develop the team the way he wants to. If you buy Baines you do it so that he comes in and performs from day one. You get three or four good years out of him and hopefully have his replacement ready for when he steps aside. It's not ideal, but I can see the logic when he's going to probably have to replace Rio and possibly Evra this summer. Not to mention Vidic, who now seems incapable of putting together a sustained run of games. It might be slightly cautious, but it could also be very canny in that he is still one of the best two or three left backs in the league, so he's no mug.

Agree with this. Baines wouldn't be the most awe inspiring signing but he would be safe and effective. We have enough work to do in other positions, a reliable and experienced LB will do just fine for a few years.
