Jamie Vardy | Signs new contract

Very strange move, he thrives in a counter attacking system, and Arsenal plays exactly opposite to it.

There has been talk for a while that Wenger wants to go back to a more counter attacking system. I wouldn't mind, don't think we have the players to play a possession based football any more.

What do Arsenal fans make of this? Good player for the short term. But I don't think he's the world class striker they were looking for.

I am surprised, very surprised by this if I'm being honest. Didn't see us going for him, figures being thrown around for under £20m and you can't go wrong there. There is a real lack of top class strikers available, most already at top clubs and they won't leave easily.

He's very clinical and very aggressive, been remarkable at Leicester this season. Everyone thought the goals would dry up but he kept banging them in. We've been the most wasteful team in the PL, so having a clinical player will do us much good.

I think Vardy is a one season wonder, he'll never get a season close the one his just had. It's only Mahrez and Kante from Leicester who I think can go on to bigger things, the rest have just had a wonder season.

You've said £20, someone said £25, and I said £30million.

Don't think it's known, although the £30million I said was from an article and a couple sources.

I've read £22 million a few times which is surely borderline value, at £30 million things are getting a bit silly.

He would be a good signing for Arsenal. Although he's 29 he hasn't played a lot of football so could probably last at the top level until 35. He has loads of pace, is a clinical finisher and would be a big improvement on Giroud. I also don't think he's a one season wonder because his record before Leicester was incredible.

Not a bad fee for him but I'm not sure he was the step up Arsenal were looking for in a striker.

Not I'm not, and have a look at the Arsenal forum and they don't either.

But who would have thought Vardy could do what he did last season, so you never know, but it looks like a daft potential signing on paper.

I'd find this funnier than anything else if it goes through

Yeah because he was playing against gardeners and window cleaners for Fleetwood town.

How long before he gets caught being racist in London?

This could just be a smokescreen to drive down the Morata price, although I understand he expressed interest in returning to Real.

Think he is a short term solution, I'd rather sign him than nobody tbh. Last few years has proven very difficult to sign top quality strikers, we went chasing big players and ended up with nobody. Why would the top clubs even consider selling unless they get someone equally good or better?

Weird if true, cant see it happening tbh nothing about it makes sense for any party involved

Maybe the Arsenal physio will finally sort out his pesky broken wrist though

Stop distracting him from the Euro's Wenger you nonce.

It's a poor signing if it goes ahead, not a massive improvement on what you have, why not just use Iwobi upfront.

Nearly everyone thought Kane is a 1 season wonder, and everyone was proved wrong. While the age argument stands in this case, it may just be a case of him being a late bloomer. He still is very quick for a 29 year old. And while he isn't technically great, his biggest asset- speed- gives him an advantage of a second to control the ball over the defenders. Add to that his conversion rate was pretty high. If it manages to remain anywhere close to that, Vardy may score many more goals especially with Ozil in the side

Because Iwobi hasn't scored 20 PL goals in a season. Not the improvement I wanted but I think a big improvement over Giroud. Any decent striker should have scored 20+ goals with the chances we create. Giroud is bang average and have simply had enough of him up top for us.

Think this will end in tears. One season wonder for me.

In agreement that its a poor more for Arsenal. They need(ed) to aim higher with regard to a new striker. Cant really see Vardy outperforming Welbeck or Walcott (if he stays).

He'll literally be a fox in the box for Arsene if anyone remembers Francis Jeffers.

Don't see this happening. He can't be that daft to make this move.
That said, he is the perfect Arsene striker...people seem to ignore the fact that his success have come with a young Anelka and Henry.. One of reasons why he was trying to convert Theo.

Not sure about his control & linking abilities to play at Arsenal, just an edgier less 'technical' Walcott & that doesn't fit all that well.

I'm not seeing it.

But he hasn't been given a full season. From what I have seen he looks a fantastic talent.

Just can't see how you have gone from targeting Suarez, Sterling and Benzema to Vardy.

Fair enough you didn't get those players but at least it showed ambition this is a little desperate.

Giroud is better than bang average in his good spells but is slow & seems to lose confidence & then stop scoring, at all. Then he does look poor.

Well that came out of nowhere.

It is a weird transfer for Arsenal. If they are opting for him over other younger strikers then I cannot see the Arsenal fans being to happy about this.

Arsenal aren't exactly a poor club though. If they feel they can spend £25 million (give or take) on a 29 year old who relies heavily on his pace, then go for it.

The narrative in here would say otherwise.

Seems Vardy is supposed to be an absolute donkey by the way he's being dismissed in here.

I don't think anyone's suggesting he's a donkey but it's not unusual to see players fade after one good season.

There are multiple cases in point :

Grant Holt
Rickie Lambert
Christian Benteke

To name but three players who had one good season but stunk up the prem a year later. This is a pretty crazy buy for Arsenal but I think Sr. Wenger is clearly sick of being told he never spends money and is now thinking short term.

It might work out - Vardy was phenomenal this season. But in new surroundings with new teammates at 30 it's a huge risk.
