Jamie Vardy | Signs new contract

Vardy seems like one of those players that will only thrive in a particular set up. Similar to Pedro in that sense. I hope he stays. While he'll make more money, don't see him being a regular for Arsenal the season after.

The narrative in here would say otherwise.

Seems Vardy is supposed to be an absolute donkey by the way he's being dismissed in here.
Ridiculous i think. His goals contributed massively to a title win.

I agree that I wouldn't have had him at United for a couple of reasons. But I definitely think he will be a brilliant signing for Arsenal. Could even have the Van Persie effect

I think people are saying that he thrives in a particular style of play, one which Arsenal definitely do not use. No one's saying that he's not a good player.

It wont work out. Will absolutely not reproduce this seasons form. I am convinced. It is such a weird move for Arsenal that i dont believe it, yet.

Wrong signing if they go ahead though. If I supported Arsenal I'd be very unhappy, Morata is out there, admitted a desire to play in EPL and £30-40m gets him. Instead Wenger opts for Vardy. Just madness. So many better strikers could be signed.

This is spot on, and as such let's hope it's true!

Could it also explain why we didn't just pay Fellainis? Although that is 99% most likely down to idiocy.
No. Release clauses are as legally binding in England as they are in Spain, if they are done correctly. They are just not mandatory, like they are in Spain.

The Fellaini story is due to Moyes/Ed incompetence. Moyes wanted both Fellaini (who had a release clause) and Baines, but he knew that if he was to pay Fellaini's money upfront Everton will have enough cash to stop Baines from going. That's why we kept making a double offer for Fellaini+Baines and didn't just buy them separately. It was a sign from the Gods for us not to sign him at all but we didn't listen :(

Fair opinion in that case (i haven't read the replies before mine)

But i do disagree. I think he can thrive in a more attacking style too

There's also the fact that he stretches the pitch so well vertically, he'll enable Arsenal to virtually camp in the oppo half and if play breaks down, they [the oppo] have to keep a deep line or be destroyed on the counter with a swift countering through-ball from Oezil/Carzola/Wilshire.

His age is a misleading factor as he's not done the hard-running at peak level like most pros who came up the normal way. Contrast him with the likes of Rooney, and his miles on the clock are redundant. He'll be around, and quick, for a longer period of time than your average striker.

Arsene obviously wants to increase the level of ugliness and cuntishness in his team and Vardy is perfect for that.

Vardy would be mad not to go at 29. It'll be interesting to see who, if anyone, joins Arsenal in the race.

Another transfer after Xhaka. Who is next? Probably a CB, Wenger going for it
Strongly linked with Ricardo Rodriguez. Not sure where that would leave Monreal and Gibbs.

Strange one, he just doesn't seem like an Arsenal signing at all.

Shame for Arsenal fans that Wenger didn't splash the cash last summer as the prem was there for the taking, not so sure it will be next season.

Feel for Leicester .The nightmare of the break up of the side seems to be coming true. As for Vardy himself .Think he's the wrong player for arse.

I suppose Moyes would say it was the "respect" for Everton that stopped him taking the much more sensible approach of negotiating for "just" Baines, and then once wrapped up, stealing in late for Fellaini.
Like anyone else would have done.

We got away with one for Baines though. Would have taken a huge fee for his age, and he has declined since then.
Shaw was a much better option, such a shame about the injury.

The funniest thing about the Xhaka and Vardy signing is that they are in the same positions every Arsenal fan wanted replacements in last summer but Wenger was too stubborn. He might be accepting his mistake now but it maybe too late.

Maybe they didn't spend any money last season because top 4 was more assured.
Now with the league looking very strong next season, they need to make sure they stay in CL contention.

Don't think he's the right signing for Arsenal. He won't get the space to run into that he thrives on.

At least we didn't end up with Baines as well though. He'd be a sub-£10m player if he wasn't English.

Arsenal are useless. They need a world class striker, and have needed one since RvP left 4 years ago. And someone who can hold the ball up and play off Sanchez.
Though I guess Vardy running onto Ozil's passes is a good route to goal.

Maybe you're right, but they'll need to spend a good bit yet to guarantee anything, their defence to me looks like a disaster waiting to happen, and not sure I'd want to be relying on Giroud and Vardy all season.

I think he's a player that has had a stellar season. I don't think he's a stellar player.

Arsenal signing Vardy and playing to his strength, e.g., hoofball over the defenders seems counterintuitive to the attractive football they tend to play. I understand the need to be multifunctional, so perhaps this signing will give them another dimension in the attack.

Why would he have such a large release clause when Leicester were shit and he was average before this season? Are release clauses something you can change without needing to sign a new contract?

Edit: forgot he signed a new contract in Feb. My bad!

Weird one. I didn't expect Arsenal to go for him. Is there any idea how much the release clause is?

I also think his release clause is even higher for non champions league qualified teams.

Don't think it's as bad a signing as all that, if it happens, they have a lump option up top in Giroud already and Ozil could do well with a mobile, combative frontman (Not Theo). Could be frightening with Sanchez and one of Campbell/Iwobi/Whoever on each side running at people. They played a bit more on the counter this season and did alright in parts. Don't really understand how they're allowed to this before the window has opened though?

I think he'd be a good signing if they actually played to his strengths. The way he runs off the shoulder is a nightmare for defenders to deal with and would give all of Arsenals ball-players in midfield a target to aim for.

Yep. Which is exactly why he will probably be useless for England in the Euros.

I suspect we'll be outplayed in nearly every game so we'll be on the counter a fair bit.

If Woy had any sense he'd set the team up for it.
