James Wilson

Is it 21? That's interesting. Do you know if that includes players who have played previously in other leagues like the Championship?

It's actually 22. Ten years ago it was just 19, but teams have become less and less willing to blood young talent as the pressure to stay in the league or secure a top four finish has become ever greater. Easier to buy cheap foreign talent and hope for instant results. It's a real problem.

I would absolutely love to see United be able to field a B side in the Football League. Would make infinitely more sense than the crappy reserve league. Just another thing the Spanish have right.

Looking at Liverpool from back in the day when they produced some awesome strikers in Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen. How were these guys at academy/reserve level. Maybe its best to give the really standout players a run in the first team as soon as possible and they may find it within their grasp very soon, if you delay, they may fall behind.

That was an age when the PL was a lot weaker than it is now and where everyone played two up front. You can afford to give young strikers a lot more game time in a 4-4-2 but no ones going to start an 18 year old up front in a 4-2-3-1, even most Championship clubs won't do that.

If you're a talented striker who's not in the Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney class of just being brilliant even at 18 years old then it's extremely hard to get game time anywhere approaching a decent level with the way most teams setup now.

Yes please. Championship loan already will be a great step for him. A few weeks at Burnley, on tour in the summer and maybe back out to Burnley next season or to another Championship side. He is progressing very fast this season, reminiscent of Januzaj's progression a bit. It is almost impossible to get in as a striker so better to get a few loans in early so he'll be ready to play for us at about 21.

Isn't he injured at the mo? I'm sure it would be good experience for him but I'd be shitting bricks every incoming tackle. He's still quite frail.

He missed the last U21s game with illness not injury.
It'll be interesting to see him in the championship if he goes.

Cheers. Do you know why Pearson and Thorpe missed said game?

Phew, it looked a nasty one and I hadn't heard anything about him being back or how long he was out, the one game I've missed this season was the LSC so that'll be why.

Encouraging to see him in the first teams match day squad for today even though he didn't make the bench

Until it's mathematically impossible for us to get into Europe next year, I can't see him appearing for the first team just yet.

Which of the kids have been involved in first team squads this season? Charni, Rothwell and now Wilson?

If he was a winger he'd have a better chance of being involved but as a striker I don't think we'll see him. Good to see him around the first team so much though, shows Moyes must rate him. Did that Burnley loan not materialize or still chance of it? Really looking forward to see him play some senior football.

Would love him to get his debut today, we literally have nothing to lose by giving him a chance, and I think he may prove capable.

Fantastic news - I'm really hoping this lad makes it here. Even if he doesn't play today, sitting on the bench at St James' Park will be a great experience.

Saw it on twitter, but Wilson's been involved in U18, U19, U21 and senior squad today. Thats some progression.

Hopefully his inclusion in the squad against Newcastle means he will get an appearance or two during the last couple of games. There should be no reason why he shouldn't really.

That's what I'm hoping. Really would love him to get an outing or two in the last few games.

I doubt he will get a run out this season. He should be in plans for our pre-season tour though, along with a few others.
