James Wilson

Looks to have a great future ahead of him. Haven't seen much of him, but from watching some of the videos above, it looks like, as well as playing up front, he has the required attributes to play as an inverted winger - similar to how we sometimes use Welbeck. He's strong, quick, works incredibly hard, good control, can spot a pass and has a great left foot.

Between now and the end of the season, it be nice to see him get some minutes for the first team, especially with RVP and now maybe Rooney out.

Boss considers Wilson bow
David Moyes has hinted he may hand James Wilson a senior debut before the end of the season after circumstances dictated that he was unable to make his bow at Newcastle United.

The 18-year-old striker was on the bench at St James' Park but Ashley Young and Marouane Fellaini were injured and that affected the manager's tactical plans. After returning to Under-21 duty but being withdrawn due to an injury himself on Thursday night against Norwich City, Wilson will hope for another chance to link up with the first team in the remaining games.

"If the opportunity had been right at Newcastle, I'd have tried to get him some minutes on the pitch," revealed Moyes to MUTV. "As it was, we lost a couple of people in the game to injury so we had to make substitutions and we couldn't get to a position to give him some minutes. He's done well in the Reserves and earned an opportunity.

"I think he's got a good chance, the boy, and we want to keep him right but keep moving him up and progressing him when we think the opportunities are there.

"If the opportunity comes [before the end of the season], we'll do so but we have a lot of people looking for a game."

Makes his injury more annoying. Hope it's nothing serious.

Hadn't heard he was injured?
I'm pretty sure he came off injured in the U21s game against Norwich. Appeared to be limping a bit. I'm not sure there has been an official update but Moyes hasn't hinted he's out of contention now so I'm hoping it was nothing serious. I'd love to see him get a run out for the first team.

He's the reason why that if Van Persie leave, I'd be happy to just share the minutes with the rest of the team and Wilson. Seems like he could go far without a loan.

Would be great if he could make a few appearances - doubt it'll happen vs Everton though.

Went off with a knock didn't he? Can't see him making the bench for this one

Yeah he's really elusive with quick reflexes and quick feet. For some reason when I watch him I think of Darren Fletcher, which seems bizarre but I think its just his upright posture on the ball.

Yes, he hobbled off against Norwich. Seemed like nothing more than a knock though. But; he does limp around at some stage in just about every match and it often seems related to the ankle he dislocated a few years back, so he is still a bit frail and we need to be careful with him at this stage.

Even if it's just a knock, Moyes won't risk him for the Everton game, even if it is just to come off the bench in the last 5-10 minutes. He'll be kept in Moyes' mind, I've no doubt. Fantastic talent.

I think it's quite important for our youth set-up that he does well when he starts to get first team chances. Januzaj has proved to Moyes that gambling on a youngster can pay huge dividends. If another kid can impress so soon - and an English kid who's spent his entire footballing career in our academy, no less - then he'll start to look to our youth teams as a real resource, and a potential solution to problems with the squad.

We've all seen the potential coming through in various age-groups, but genuine opportunities to advance into the first team are as much the lifeblood of a youth set-up as the talent itself.

He should get his chance soon and he'll have deserved it. Some people look at deficiencies but there are more reasons then not to give the kid a chance. The fact he's English probably means we could be looking at someone who will be a big asset to the club

People get so excited about big money signings, and they are definitely needed no doubt to keep competitive. But I get far more joy watching these kids come through our academy and make their debuts for the first team over any signing. Seeing Welbeck and more recently Januzaj come into the team and do well is so rewarding, and hopefully Wilson can come in and do the same.

agree. Especially seeing an English lad with such potential. I am very excited for us...and for England :)

Hopefully the injury to Wilson isn't serious would be a bit of happiness if he could get some game time in what has been a pretty damp season.

Great comments from Moyes and I don't what to turn this into a Moyes debate but one of the reasons(The list is pretty small) I'm still trusting Moyes is the way he's brought Januzaj into the first team has been a big plus and simply the fact Moyes is talking about giving Wilson game time is something I'm not to sure we'd get with a certain other manager.

Its more exciting seeing a great talent come through yes, but its also harder to make happen and more work than spending money on someone else's outstanding young product. Luckily enough Wilson is in that category so we wouldnt need to.

Obviously you need a mix of the two. But the only way Moyes' willingness to gamble on these kids will grow is if they take their chances when they get them the way Januzaj has. So it'd be doubly rewarding to see Wilson succeed, because it would also pave the way for the likes of Pearson after him.

He'll score on his debut for us.

The second he's on the pitch, I'm sticking money on him to score.

Phil Neville on Wilson:

“He started the season in Paul McGuinness’ U18 side but has thrived with every step up we’ve given him up to the U21′s and training with the seniors and now its about managing those steps to make sure he keeps progressing, he deserved his chance with the seniors against Newcastle.

“We’ve been toughening him up by having him training against the likes of Vidic, Smalling, Jones and Evans”

I expect Giggs to give him some minutes in the remaining games.

He was hobbling a bit when he came off in the last game, but hopefully it's not serious. With nothing to play for - except the Europa, I guess, and do the club really want that? - he might get his chance. If we escaped this dismal season with two young stars of the future, Januzai and Wilson, established in the first team, it would be something saved from the wreckage.

If he steps up between now and next season, would you be happy to lose either Welbeck or Hernandez (assuming they stick around for the new guy)?

Well not happy but I expect Hernandez to leave and I would more than happy if Wilson could take up his place. It's always hard to make the step up but this kid looks seriously talented.

The reason I ask is that I've not seen him play, other than a few goal clips and I wondered if people think he's good enough to go straight in as 3rd or 4th striker.

A seen a lot of the U21's games and his looks and level above everyone else's on the pitch. I would say he's easily worth a shot a bring 3rd or 4th choice.

Yep. If Hernandez were to agitate for a move (which I hope he doesn't), I'd rather we promoted Wilson than bought a replacement. He looks very ready.

hope to see him given a few chances for the remaining matches. would be great to see some fresh talented youngsters given taste of first team action now.
