He's better than Mkhitaryan, Mata and Rooney combined.

He's really not. He has barely played this season and scored two tap-ins against cannon fodder, whilst playing in probably the best team in the world at the moment.

Not seen much of him, but is he another number 10? Do we need another one?

I want a speedy right winger who can take his man on.

And yet he is behind the BBC, Modric, Kroos, Isco, Asensio and Vasquez in the pecking order. He's a fraud.
The politics of playing time at Madrid are more involved and selection goes beyond ability on the pitch.

Given how poor Benzema has been this season, he woudnt be starting at Madrid if he wasnt a Perez toy and his godfather (benzema's own words) wasnt the coach. Bale starts whenever he can put on his boots even if he has to limp off in less than 40mins on the pitch.

With the little playing time he has had, James has shown enough to convince he should be higher in the pecking order (definitely ahead of Asensio and Vasquez) and potentially in the starting line-up. But Zidane seems to think otherwise and who am I to question the genius of Zidane who watched his team down to 10 man concede a last minute goal after push up field for a winner against Barca when a draw would have more or less sealed the league title.

Would he make our team better, the answer is clear yes.

Would the improvement justify the 30-50 million he would probably cost us, the answer is no. We have two players who play their best in the same position (Mata and Miki) and we have a number of other areas that need improvement.

We need to look for a right winger and a centre back as a priority, then we need to work out what we are doing for full backs for the next 5 years. Then I would look for a Carrick replacement, and probably another Striker who can play anywhere in the front 3 to replace Zlatan.

Only after getting those 5-6 players would I look at signing another number 10.

He is the kind of player United - dribbling+creativity+goals+ set pieces. The fact that Mata and Mkhi play their best in a similar position is irrelevant if their best is not meeting the needs of the team.

The right winger is a role I think Mikhi can fill for now, while the creative player in the middle is what is sorely needed. Mkhi, Mata, Rashford, Martial and even Lingard can all make intelligent runs to get into goal scoring position but we dont have that player that consistently makes the final pass for them to exploit it. James can make make the pass and also contribute significant goals (from within and outside the box). But his durability is questionable

lets be fair he had a cracking world cup a few years back but he was hardly setting monaco on fire when he was there and hes no exactly been great at Madrid, surely we wont be wasting our time on players like this,

Both statements basically confirm that you've hardly seen him for either.

no really he was pretty poor at monaco apart from a spell towards the end of the season and madrid he again had a good spell in his 1st season but since then hes been shite.

Pretty poor but he was Monaco's joint 3rd highest goal scorer (with 10 goals behind falcao with 11 and Riviere with 13) and he led the entire ligue1 with 12 assists?

In his first season at Madrid, 3rd highest goal scorer on the team with 17 goals (behind CR and Benzema) and 13 assist in the league. His struggle at Madrid has been due to lack of playing time than his ability on the pitch. With Madrid down to 10 men, he was on the pitch (in place of Benzema) for less than 5min before he scored the equalizer that should have earned Madrid a draw, and when he started against Deportivo, he scored twice. He has scored the same number of goals as Bale while starting less games and is behind only Kroos and Marcelo in assists.

If an attacking midfielder that provides 10+ goals and 10+ assists is poor, I cant imagine what you would consider to be decent, talk less of good..

I don't want us to sign him. Good player no doubt, like an upgraded Oscar, but I'd rather we spent that money on a proven finisher or a lightning quick winger. Even a pair of fullbacks who can deliver a reliable cross would be nice.

Also, and importantly, I don't want another Real reject.

If he was that good he would be starting in all matches for Real.

No.
Mkhitaryan, Mata and Rooney aren't good enough to seat on the Real Madrid bench.

James, Isco and Asensio are easily better than them.

the french league ? wow so impressed with those stats, he plays for a madrid side who most weeks pump teams by 3/4/5 goals is hardly a impressive goal haul he has, what did he cost them 60mil? should be producing much better numbers then what he has simple as that.

would take Mkhitaryan before any they 3, none of them have ever been consistant performers at madrid, Asensio looks the most likely to make it there while the other 2 are constantly linked with moves away because they are not good enough for madrid,

If he comes he will end up playing second fiddle to Mkhitaryan because I believe he will be at his best next season with a season of premier league football under his belt

From Sky's transfer ticker:

RODRIGUEZ PUSHING UTD MOVE

Real Madrid forward James Rodriguez has an agreement with agent Jorge Mendes to ensure he signs for Manchester United this summer, according to Spanish outlet Diario Gol.

Mendes is also agent to United manager Jose Mourinho and their relationship could push through the move as Rodriguez has been restricted for game time at Real Madrid this season.

We must sign him now that we have the #7 shirt available.

The potential of a 'James 007' campaign can't be ignored.

I just can not get on board with this
Me neither. Doesn't feel right.

A 'name' player who's been chewed up and spat out by Real Madrid and plays in a position where we've already got loads of options. Seems like it would be a signing for marketing reasons, not football ones.

Hope these reports aren't true. We can do better.

Can't see that either, he's done nothing since that WC performance. His name gets bandied about a lot, but never in the context of how well he has played.

If he's hungry to reach his potential he might be worth it but I'm sure Jose will judge whether he is worth it well.

I compared the stats of the United players you mentioned. I selected the best seasons of these players for their respective clubs. I agree James is better than Mata but he is not as good as Mkhi, and not as good as Rooney when it comes to goals scored and successful take ons. Only his shot accuracy is better than Mkhi, and since 2015 James has played worse, you can see his stats on Squawka if you want.

Stephen Howson from FullTimeDevils seems convinced this is on. I don't know if he's a reliable source or not though.

Would be a strange signing imo. He's not what we need.

When I looked at the TF this morning, my first thought was that we were talking about the Southampton striker, Jay. Was angry and confused.

Stephen Howsen is not a source, or to my knowledge has any inside information. He gives his opinion based on how respectable the articles or sources are from the news.

FTD is merely a fan-run YouTube channel and Howson is also just a fan of the club. Why would he have any sources than you or me?

I think we should go for him. Especially if Martial wants to leave. His stats are pretty impressive.

You used "total" instead of "per game" or 90mn?

Yeah, it's that I was laughing about tbh, should have made that clear.

The other two you could make a case for but Isco is on another level right now.

Ahhh I see. Yeah I agree, in the form of his life at present.
