In my opinion James is an upgrade over any 10s we have currently. Sure we have some that can play that role, but not to the same level as James. With that being said I think it would be worth inquiring about James (which I'm sure Ed has done his due diligences). If we could get James at a reasonable price then I see no reason not to sign him as he'd be an upgrade, and then we could still go out and sign a winger. I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that we could afford it.

We could afford it although there is the issue we may need to hang on to the funds allocated to Greizmann budget for another 6/12 months instead of spending it now. But there will be no reasonable price with Madrid.

For me there's no question. It's surprising that so many people have forgotten how good he is. Plenty of players don't get on at Real for whatever reason but it rarely means they've suddenly forgotten how to play. James is top class and once he finds a new team we'll be wondering why we weren't in for him in a few months.

I would love to get James, would be great to watch. It's probably true that we need a right-sided player a bit more - both Mkhi and Mata are better in the middle - but still, James is clearly a very talented player.

Its a question of getting an average winger or a world class No 10 who can play on the flanks too.

Both the arguments have decent cases and both the options are not ideal. Guess it will go down to who budges first. Inter with Perisic or Madrid with James.

Why do people say we need to sell Mata if we buy James? We need two good players in every position.

Mkhi - James - Perisic
.........Lukaku

Lingard - Mata - Martial
.........Rashford

That's the depth and quality Manchester United should have.
Completely agree.

Is it an either/or situation though? I can see that both positions could be upgraded and we can afford it. who knows!

Besides anything else, having someone that could actually clear the front defender in a set-piece would be worth a few million alone. If we could get a few more goals by actually getting the ball into the box could mean goal difference, if nothing else. We have a number of tall players, but no service.

I swear, if I have to see Phil Jones taking a corner again...

Reading through this thread you'd think we have Muller or Hazard starting for us on the wing or number 10. Instead we have Lingard playing 40+ games and people saying we don't need a player like James Rodriguez because he hasn't shown anything or he wouldn't fit. Yes i agree we need a winger before anything else, but let's not rewrite history and forget that he's a quality player. He's better than Mata and even Mkhitaryan in my opinion and if we could buy him for anything under 50m he would be a good addition. He can take great set pieces and give that x factor we lack.

He is indeed a very good set piece taker and crosser of the ball, which is something we lack. However he's by no means the only player available with that skillset - Lemar, for example is just as good in that respect, while being younger, faster and with a better workrate.

Hey man, we can't make Conte and Wenger cry in the same week. That's just nasty.

It's another Di Maria situation waiting to happen, he'd look good in August / September.

Then there'd be a bit of frost or snow, his wife wouldn't like the shops or the food, "injuries" would start and it'd all go to shit.

Not convinced he wants to be there

Why do people keep saying things like this?

As far as I'm aware that's only ever happened once. Why is there any belief it would happen again? It's clearly a unique situation.

Additionally, James seems desperate to come to United.

tbf no one wants him

Do you guys really believe that Madrid will fall again for the same trick?
There was no trick. We made enquiries about their player, they set a high price and we went with a different option. It happens all the time but was a bit more shocking as everyone assumed Lukaku was going to Chelsea.

Looks like he's going to Bayern Munich now. they don't spend much on transfer fees so likely they are getting another super discount. Won't be surprised if they sold him for €50m. Tolisso, Alaba, James, Vidal, Thiago, Martinez, and Sanchez thats a terrific midfield and we can't even get a decent #6.

Where did you read this? Last I heard about Rodriguez and Bayern was a month or two ago.

I think he would be happy to go anywhere he can play football at the moment. Pretty clear Madrid have no place for him despite their public nonsense and have to wonder if he would take another season of doing nothing.

I hope we get him. He won't be cheap but let's say himself, Lukaku, and the general core of the team start gelling and playing to their full ability we have a serious chance of competing for all competitions for the next 5 years.

This is what I don't get.

Mkhi - played as a 10 in BVB and it didn't work. Had to be switched to a wide right role to get him back to his best - or to any level of competence to be fair. He's wasted as a 10. Also, his weakest part (from last season as well) was conversion. Hardly the most ringing endorsement of why he should be a 10, surely?

Mata - never been a 10 trusted by any manager, including Jose. Why exactly would that change this season? He's not a 10 cut out for the Prem, and the sooner we all accept that, the sooner we can move on to bigger and better things.

In summary, James is one of the top 2-3 players in the world for that position. I'd rather take James than any other player for that position. If we are budget-constrained and need a stop-gap for a position which needs to be one of Mata / Martial, I'd rather that were on the wings, to be honest. The absence of a 10 means that whenever we switch to a 4-2-3-1, we have either Lingard or Fellaini playing that position. That is a deal-breaker for me.

Mkhitaryan 13/14 season where he played the CAM for Borussia was okay-ish as far as the numbers go, the next season where he was thrown on the wing was a shit one for him (iirc it was the season when Klopp left) and the next one where he played as many games on both wings was his best one. For Shakthar he's played #10, that's what got him a transfer to BVB.

Mata's best season was when he played #10 for Chelsea.

So basically the whole Mata/Miki can't play at #10 is simply not true.

It will be more or less like Morata's case itself.

Why should ideally expect any profit. The player was bought on a inflated price itself, failed to lived up to the potential and hype and is a bench warmer. This should be a loss deal, expecting any profit is unrealistic.

Because that is how financials work. The players are booked as assets when they are bought (transfer fee is capex) and their salaries are booked as opex.

So if a player is bought for 80 mil € and signed on a 5 year deal, that means he will be depreciated for the next 5 years. 80/5 = 16 mil € year.

After 3 years/seasons spent at the club his value is = 80 - 16 - 16 - 16 = 32 mil €. If that player is sold for anything above 32 mil €, it's profit in the books, regardless of how it looks to average football fan with zero accounting knowledge.

With Lukaku already in James makes perfect sense. Considering what they want for Morata 60m EUR should be enough to get him and he's worth it.

Mkhitaryan is pregnant?
Our medical team really is shit.

Spanish press are saying Bayern/Ancelotti have joined as teams asking about James

Whoever fronts the money first wins

He strikes me as almost the total opposite of the archetypal Mourinho number 10. He simply just doesn't work hard enough.

The only way we sign him is if Jose does it to appease Mendes. I don't believe he'd go out of his way to sign James otherwise.

They've been saying that for a month haven't they? Madrid have been trying to create an auction to get €75m, but no one's bit yet.

He works harder than Ozil who was one of Mourinho's most important players.

Why are we not trying to sign him?! If there's any player I want so badly, it's James Rodriguez, just after Griezmann. He would be an upgrade over any of our attacking players, he's a class player, one of the best players at the 2014 World Cup and he is only 25. Mata is 29 so he isn't that young anymore, Rodriguez would be a stronger and bigger version of Mata.
