Looked solid but unspectacular, probably what you want from that position and he started maturely for me, look forward to seeing more

We were a mess second half and the pitch deteriorated to such an extent that there was no rhythm in the game at all. Not a great time to catch the eye.

Not impressed but looked matured in front of iqbal, chong, elanga and hannibal. He should be part of the squad in this crowded season.

Perspective, people. Perspective.

Playing in CM next to fecking Telles and with AWB to his right, on an absolutely terrible field, surrounded by just about every kid we have.

I mean, come on. We couldn't even get the ball, let alone Garner to do anything unique. He showed up physically and won some nice tackles that could have resulted in some converted counter-attacks if Chong had better decision making.

One of the only players who played OK in the second half.

It's hard to shine in a way most people notice surrounded by shite.
Agreed, he did a job when few others were. I hope we get to see more of him in better conditions.

Difficult to judge him from that game really. Awful scrappy match and dreadful pitch.

Did some good defensive work though.

He's the only true DM in the current squad so he'll definitely get his chances to show more this season.

Short sighted opinion, in my view.

He's going to get a lot of minutes this season and might well become a starter.
Yeah just put our hopes for a vital position on a 20 y/o with no league experience, what could go wrong... I think, he can play a role for United but right now, what he needs is steady game time, maybe without the pressure of having to be one of the saviours of good old United. He isn't as good as he could impress everybody so knives will be out after a few meh performances that are bound to happen.

For the players own sake - send him on loan, put a clause in that we can get him back in January but get him out of the heat.

Oh yeah, get rid of our 4th most experienced central midfielder who was one of the best midfielders in the championship at 21, and rely on McFred and the invisible man, or overspend on players who aren't as talented as Garner to send him on loan if we can't get FdJ.

Great thinking.

Another loan but PL as irrespective of what people think, he’s not leapfrogging this season Fred, Scot or DVB.

Fred definitely not, McTominay I think for sure he would for the playmaker role at the very least. Van de Beek doesn't really do anything so I feel like Garner would get in ahead of him.

Garner has lots of qualities so definitely not about that, for me I don’t see how he gets game time to show it. Think he’s been unlucky getting an injury so early in the tour but arguably, based on performances per season Iqbal and Savage deserve an opportunity before him.

You think you are being pragmatic but I don't think you are. If a player like Garner is the best we have as 4th choice midfielder then this is only a sign how catastraphic our squad development and recruitment has been. Pretty sure it is impossible to "undo" such mistakes just by "bringing a youth product in". It just not good enough. We made mistakes, we have to correct them, bring in one, two or even three midfielders who are ready to contribute and give young players like Garner the possibility to develop in a calm environment. At this point, bringing one or two midfielders should already be on panic buy level, I consider it as a mega issue, that we walk right into the chainsaw with this - just hoping for FDJ to come in.

If you like Garner as a player, you shouldn't wish him to become an option at this point in time, the club isn't a good environment for player development at the moment as everybody is waiting for us to start to challenge again, with a squad bereft of confidence, a new manager with ideas completely new to the squad and so on. There is a chance, that you can get it done when you are a talent like Greenwood but Garner isn't that at all.

I think he offers more than McTominay and VDB next to Fred in the pivot (not hard I suppose). Shame about the injury as it would've been nice to get a better look at him in these first four games.

Missed the game today. What role did he play, the deeper playmaker that Fred has started in or the more advanced that McTominay had started in before today?

More advanced, unfortunately. Telles played in the deeper role that Fred has been playing in. Don't ask why.

When Cooper took over in Sept and we went to 3 at the back, it took Jimmy about a month to find his feet. He was in and out of the team and not the player we remembered from the previous season. It suddenly clicked towards the end of November and was never out of the team. Will he get the time to adapt to United and Ten Hag? Pre-season won’t be long enough but give him time and you’ll have the next Michael Carrick.

I think the manager made a commitment to assess all the players so that's why he was not automatically put out on loan. Even more so for midfielders as we lost Matic and Pogba. He's not seen much of him yet.

If we sign de Jong then he has de Jong, Fred, McTominay, Eriksen and probably Iqbal ahead of him in the pecking order.

He was settled in the Forest team, playing in a role he'd play not too dissimilar for ten Hag, we should've left him with Forest for another season. No better chance to see if he's ready to step up to the United first team than after a season in the PL with Forest.

Cheers. I think he would be more suited to the deeper role too, hopefully he will get a chance to play in that position in the upcoming games.

Yeah, me too. With the De Jong transfer up in the air, we haven't really got an ideal back up to Fred. Martinez is a possibility, but you'd assume he'd play at the back following ten Hag's comments. “I analysed and United last year were quite vulnerable over the left part of the defence. [Lisandro Martinez] is left-footed and that is an advantage in possession but also in defending". Funnily enough, we looked really weak down the left hand side in the second half when Villa started to attack.

Savage has done well, but he's young and inexperiecned. We simply couldn't go into the season with him as back up to Fred, despite being very impressive on tour. Therefore, Garner is probably the closest to an ideal back up. As you said, hopefully he'll get a chance to showcase his ability.

Two observations. Forest play a different style and formation to ETH so I am not sure it would be an ideal fit to train him for a future role here and secondly, once we agreed to loan them Henderson he became ineligible to return other than on a permanent deal due to PL loan rules. I would like to see him get a good loan if we are not going to play him much and I am sure depending on signings there is a chance that is the outcome.
