He is clearly holding out for the wages that he has seen Williams and the like get.

I would let him go, I dont see a PL club signing him even on a free or even match the wages we probably offer.
Williams will never be good enough imo, but the lads laughing to the bank. Another poor decision from the club.

Exactly. This is why we cannot afford to do that again, these kids have potential but the step up is massive. Nothing of Garner suggests to me that he can make the step up anytime soon.

If he is holding out for a big pay, we should let him go and send a message to some of the kids saying you still need to work hard and be good enough.

Some people seem to think that regardless of having one of the youngest squads in the league we should just keep throwing younger and younger players in or it means we aren't giving youth a chance.

Nope, I belive that the club will give youngsters a chance when they pat themselves on the chest and says "WE GIVE YOUTH A CHANCE!". Greenwood and somewhat Williams are the only ones who have got a real chance under Ole and then again Greenwood is a premium talent who even Mourinho would've played. We have maybe the best academy in the world, with talent such as Hannibal, Laird, Amad, Elanga, Garner but James, Mata and Pereira are preferred. A club that gives youth a chance makes difficult decisions, such as selling Lukaku and giving Greenwood a chance. That was a brilliant decision IMO but we've not seen enough of it. Playing a youngster for 15 minutes can anyone do, even Mourinho with Gomes.

If he does reject a renewal, I wouldn't blame him. Go somewhere else for more minutes. If he is good enough we can always go back in for him, particularly if we have a buy back clause.

Lets be honest, they play their hearts out when they reach the first team, probably thinking about the spanking new Mercedes, Gucci wardrobe and watches they're gonna buy, then kick back once they get their 40k a week contract.

I saw a distinct drop in Williams performances after his new deal.

Complete fool if this is true. Doubt it is though.

100% its complacency. Williams got the deal and like you say dropped standards, thats the problem we have with our youngsters. This is the one club that you can actually get in, if Garner was looking at the current team and said i'll sign a contract work hard go on loan and prove I can play here.

There is a clear slot open for his position, we lack a CDM and he can play that role so surely he has to have a look at that.

There may also be other things behind the scenes we don't know about.

Sell him with a buy back and sell on percentage like all the sensible clus do. At this point its the best thing for all parties for a player of his profile.
Agreed. He’s still most likely on a very low wage which will increase the likelihood of a high transfer fee too.

After his relatively impressive loan at Nottingham — surely £8-12m seems fair?

Definitely. It depends on the personality of the player but I think this is hugely prevalent in the modern game and social media world. Any player who's played 5 games for a top team is going around in outfits that cost £1000s, 50k cars and definitely spending their free time chasing "influencer" girlfriends.

I've not seen anything to suggest he's ready but still frustrating when we are carrying the likes of Pereira who clearly arent up to it.

Liverpool sold Brewster for £30M.

Agreed, once they sign a contract, they go looking for the glory. This is what I was worried about Greenwood but he seems to have got over that phase, his one lasted a couple months and I think was quickly told by peers and staff that this isnt the way. We saw his downturn in form at the start of last season.

Garner had pre season to put his marker down, looks like he's failed.

How Perreira even gets game time in pre season baffles me.

Ok but Laird was injured for much of last season, Hannibal was just 17 and also got injured right as he was called up to the senior squad, Amad only arrived in January and was adjusting to the PL and did play and Elanga was again 17 and in his first season in the U23s. I think it is a bit harsh to say Ole didn't give them a chance, I expect to see a lot more of them this season and I think Hannibal in particular may get a decent number of games as the season goes on. With regards to Garner, he has not looked ready in pre season games so far and last season struggled on loan at Watford before enjoying a good run with Forest in the second half of the campaign. Half a decent season in the Championship is not the qualifications required to start demanding game time and assurances within the United first team. I think Garner is decent and could develop into a useful member of the team but if he is getting a chip on his shoulder about game time already then I agree we should look to sell with a reasonable buy back clause and then it will be up to him if he makes it.

Did anyone report this contract story? Let's see what reliable reporters say about this contract news.

In these situations you either milk some team for him or sell on the cheap with a low buy back clause. I prefer the buy back option for him as I think he will be something in 2-3 years.

And the fact that we have one of, if not the youngest squad in the league already makes no difference to your thinking at all?

James gets some game time but Mata/Pereira barely get a sniff so that's a bit of a strange one.

I don't think any of Hannibal, Laird, Amad, Elanga, Garner are ready for a sustained run in the side. You honestly think we should throw them all in?

If he doesn't want to extend then sell him with a buy back clause.

I don't understand why we keep loaning and loaning youngsters when we are not sure if they'll be good enough or not. For me the easiest and most intelligent thing to do is sell with buy back clause, that way you ensure the buying club will play him and if he's actually good enough we can buy him back with a small lose.

Obviously for generational talents such as Greenwood that break through the first team this doesn't applies, but for all the other youngsters I think it's the smart thing to do.

Liverpool sold Brewster for £30M.
Hah, fair point. But it was £23.5m, and he scored 11 in 21 for Swansea. Plus, general Liverpool tax as they seem to have a weird voodoo spell on the teams who buy their players.

And he’s a striker. Young forwards have a bit more value on them to teams lower down the table/in the Champ than a holding midfielder does.

Time for us to get ruthless and tell him to feck off, rather than hand out ridiculous wages yet again to a player that we'll be desperately trying to offload in a few years once we realise he isn't good enough.

I think they should replace Mata, James and Pereira. Would save us some money in fees and salary. Say our winger options are: Sancho, Martial, Rashford, Greenwood, Amad and Elanga. I think that is good enough. A balanced squad regarding age is probably a good thing, but we already have Matic, de Gea, Cavani, Maguire, Varane etc who all are 28+.

True, but we should get 15-20M IMO.

Agree. Loans rarely work imo. The incentive for that club just isn’t there unless it’s a really bad team and they are desperate.

Fairplay, looking for first team football and not clinging on with us, where he'd probably be continually put out on loan .

Pereira would be gone if anyone would take him and Mata is being transitioned into a coaching role. I don't think either will get significant minutes. I think Amad and Elanga will get time this year but Elanga is still quite raw.

I still don't see where the criticism is warranted. I don't think anyone on the list you've provided are ready for significant game time especially if we also want to challenge for titles.

Pereira is from the academy himself and hasn't been at the club the past 12 months and James is also a young player.

There's so much wrong with the post. It makes little to no sense.

Pereira is at the club right now and has played more than Garner in pre-season. James is 24 in November, many wingers peak at that age. A young player is 17-21 maybe.

So you're judging the club based on who has played in pre season. You also tell me wingers peak at 24. Right.

Seems legit.

That's what I'd do too, we could probably fetch a very respectable fee for him. Otherwise we may end up just losing him on a free pointlessly.

Doubt it would be the biggest loss. We’ll likely go after Rice next summer anyway who is what, two years older. Garner will do well to have found his way into the PL by that time.

Jesus United hoarding more players. Just sell him and good luck to you lad. Go make a career for yourself.

Theres also not enough minutes for them to develop as third choices. Mickson always seems to forget this. We kept Williams around as backup to the backup and look at him now? If they aren’t playing and they still haven’t made their place in the game then get them out on loan so they can at least appreciate in value. Garner is worth more now than he was this time last year. No point in just throwing young players in thoughtlessly when we have fully developed international squad players who are happy to come in when we need them. Let the youngsters go get their apprenticeship out on loan and sell and promote on that basis.

He'll sign a new contract and go out on loan.. He is going to be great.

I'm getting more and more conflicted about him having any chance of making it at United. He just seems to have a mental block when he's playing for United's first team even in these preseason friendlies. He doesn't even try things that he seemed to do on a regular basis at Forest or for the U23s. Hopefully, he can get over that block with first-team minutes at United or on loan.

He is right... he would not get the opportunity he seeks for his development at United. At any other club he might get lucrative contract plus regular game time.
