What people seem to forget when they say that there’s ages left in the transfer window, is that players need time to integrate into the team in training, etc so they can hit the ground running in Match day 1. Chelsea have had Werner and Ziyech for a while already. The PL is so competitive these days that the title challenge can be all but over in the first few games.

For Maguire they wanted 90, got 80.
For AWB they wanted 50 + removal of Zaha sell-on clause (25%, estimated 5-15m), they got 50.
Unfortunately due to the situation this year the window runs far through league starts, but I guess it would be tough for the football federations to negotiate a shorter window globally with so little time.
This means that big transfers might take all window if a better deal can be reached.
Doesn't matter if the league starts.

I feel the same, we really drew a crap straw in which billionaire ended up owning us. Though many on here seem to be against Middle East or Russian ownership, reasons only they know why.
That being said, people moaning on here should gain a better understanding of our reality, because their moans come across as very naive. "Just pay the money" is possibly the most ignorant statement one can make in this context.

It’s hard to understand how Chelsea can spend close to the same amount on one player, yet United (after getting rid of a lot of dead wood including Sanchez) are struggling to put up a similar amount for our primary target.

I reckon there is something to be said for a last minute signing. Bruno was one. Maguire was one. Evra and Vidic were too, and even Eric Cantona was signed when there wasn't such a thing as a transfer window.
I personally would prefer the club to save £10million with late business Levy style than to spend an extra £20milion in June - if only because that means the media spend less time inflating our figures to embarassing levels (I still have friends telling me what a joke Maguire is despite him being a brilliant defender all year and putting in a motm performance to get us third Vs Leicester on that final day!!!)
All the Muppets seem to think we have unlimited money and that covid hasn't hit us somehow, while similarly watching giant clubs release star players on free transfers because they can't afford the wages. Cognitive dissonance is weird with our club.
I still think this transfer is happening. I feel we’re just all around too quiet for something not to be going on behind the scenes. It’s easy to hate on Woodward and the board for being useless, but I cannot see us neglecting this window. Nothing else is going on apart from very suspect links to Brooks.

The season is long and is 38 games throughout the year.
The season is never over until it is mathematically impossible.
You can climb from 8th to 3rd just by winning several games on the trot, keep doing that and teams around you get nervous and boom you're in touching distance of the title.
If you seriously believe the PL can be all but over in the first few games you're gonna miss out on some amazing seasons of football.

They were both mid-season signings: Vidic was confirmed on January 5, Evra on January 10. Quite early on in the January transfer window. And both, especially Evra, needed time to actually get up to speed.
Also, we don't really tend to save money with those late signings. Remember the Fellaini transfer when we actually had to pay MORE than we would have had to a month before?
In the last three seasons, the champions got 100, 98, and 99 points. So yes, a title challenge can be pretty much over in the first few games. In 07/08, United dropped 7 points in the first three games. To beat 2017/18 Manchester City from that position, out of the remaining 35 games they would have had to win 32 and draw three.
You can't really afford to drop a lot of points at any stretch of the season these days.
