Jadon Sancho| Staying at Dortmund for now

Kajumba has a poor record from my recollection. Sancho has also given many interviews since his star has started to shine in the Bundesliga. If there was anything to the story, then I would've expected David McDonnel who is the Manchester correspondent to break it.
McDonell is rubbish too to be fair, as are most of the United journalists when it comes to transfers. Kajumba might have got this from Sancho’s camp considering he recently interviewed him.

Chelsea just signed pulisic and theres been a pretty big trend of Abramovich not crazy spending anymore (and they're looking very fragile long term compared to the other top 6). Not too worried about them. Barca more so than Real Madrid, but there has been a decent amount of talk of him wanting to go to the premier league so him being English helps us loads in that department. I'd say we're overwhelming favourites because both City and Liverpool have years left in their wide players while we can outspend anyone and have the automatic spot for him.

I know they signed Pulisic but they might play him on the right and want Sancho on the left to potentially replace Hazard. You’re right about Roman not spending as much as he used to (relatively) but I could see him possibly wanting to make a statement and offset the potential effect of the transfer ban if they lose the appeal. Chelsea are always in chaos but still stay successful during those periods. Add to that the fact that Sancho was a Chelsea fan as a boy and that London reportedly means a lot to him then it becomes less reassuring. I know the boyhood fan thing usually doesn’t mean much but it could be a small factor.

If Chelsea sign another winger (Bailey/Lozano/Bergwijn/Chiesa/Pepe) then I’d be happy. They definitely wouldn’t get Sancho.

I think it's unlikely that Dortmund sell this summer tbh. Especially with Pulisic leaving. They rarely sell when they don't want to. Dembele is the only one that comes to mind and even then they got Barca to pay a crazy fee. I can't see Dortmund selling Sancho this summer for anything less than £120m.

Sancho is a massive talent and DOrtmund will always sell there players for the right fee. Problem we have is there are two huge English talents available this sumer in Sancho and Bissaka.......but we have mason Greenwood and Dalot, two young and also massive talents. I would still love to sign both personally, if the money is only there for one though with other areas a priority, it would be Bissaka

Don't know much about him but I'm wary about the flavour of the week hype train. Seems crazy paying a club record fee for an 18 year old?

Agree. We have Greenwood and Chong. We should focus to get Bissaka to replace Young.

Anyone thinking just because we have Greenwood, who is yet to play a second of football for the first team, is a reason not to go for Sancho is absolutely bonkers. Probably the same people who put TFM in all their preseason fantasy lineups for the season.

Greenwood is a massive talent, and I have high hopes for him, but if he's as good as his potential seems, Sancho won't stop him making a huge impact anyway.

I call bullshit on that one, he wouldn't start at PSG and you don't pay 150M for a benchwarmer.

He most likely also wouldn’t want to go there.

No winger would want to go to a club that starts Mbappe and Neymar.

That's just wishful thinking Mbappe could easily play centrally flanked by Neymar and Sancho ,but if we make serious effort for Sancho we stand as good chance as anybody to land him.

Nah, he probably wouldn’t want to go regardless of who’s there. He’s done the whole lesser league thing already with Dortmund and it’s the same reason he wouldn’t go to Italy if anyone could afford him there, so don’t take it personally. He’s English and is clearly aiming for the top and not wanting to go on a tour of the big 5 leagues.

Unless he has some sort of extreme love for the city of Paris that we don’t know about, or he’s doing this whole football thing strictly as a job and not a passion, then he’s going to the PL or Spain.

I don’t get this whole ‘don’t sign Sancho as we have Greenwood’ thing seeing as Mason Greenwood is a striker and Sancho a right sided attacker, just because Greenwood is left footed doesn’t mean he’s suddenly going to be moved from being a striker to a right sided inside forward.

Also why wouldn’t we want Sancho if we have Chong ? I like the look of Chong and hope he fills his potential at United but having Sancho AND Chong is long term strength in depth and Sancho is clearly the Rooney or Gascoigne of his generation, look at the strength in depth the top clubs have these days.

I’d personally let Mata go this summer which creates the space for Sancho and upgrades in the right sided attacking spot too, I love Mata but he doesn’t fit the fast and fluid front three that Ole wants to go with and Lingard can play on the right or through the middle as a 10 like Mata anyway so that’s a saving of £150K a week in Mata’s wages.

Get Sancho and give him Sanchez's number 7 shirt, I could doctor my son's Sanchez 7 shirt saving me a few bob (BTW my son is now 36 but I still buy him his United shirts) !

You do realise Greenwood is a natural anywhere along the front line?

He’s clearly best as a striker so why stall his development as a striker by using him on the right because he can play there ? We haven’t actually signed a right sided player since Valencia and most agree it’s our most pressing position to fill so rather than simply using players in that position surely it’s best to sign players to play in their specialist position ?

Eventually Greenwood will battle Rashford for the central role but right now hasn’t made a single first team appearance and is being talked up to take over the right sided forward role, Chong is better placed to take that role and is also his natural position.

When we signed Rooney in 2004 we had RVN, Ole, Saha, Smith and Rossi with Forlán still at the club so going all out for Sancho as our right sided attacker is no different and more a necessity as unlike with signing Rooney we’re non existent in the right forward role.

Is he?

I agree that we need a AMR but I watch all the U18 games and a lot of his goals come while D'Mani Mellor plays as the lone striker so I don't accept that Greenwoods best position is striker, the kid has everything, 2 footed, great running with the ball, perfect for a wide forward.

Long term he can make that position his own.

if Dalot improves his defense and to replace Young for next season and Sancho joining us, our right flank would be very lethal.

He's gonna cost a hell of a lot of money to bring here. I'd say easily in the range of 120 million, if not more and that's gonna be a serious concern for the club. It's not that we have a lot of surplus assets to sell in summer to fund his purchase. Not to mention, we have a pressing need for a RB as well.

If I recall, we will make the final installment payment for the transfer window we spent in 2014 around 175m, we can spend 100m on Sancho over 5 years or so in payable installment.

Sancho could play for us for the next decade, 100m is cheap for the young player rather than like Koulibaly who probably has 6 years left in him.

On the other hand, we have like 250m cash in the bank balance now according to United's financial report

Maybe in a couple of years, but can't see us breaking our transfer record on him this summer, plus we need to strengthen in alot of areas, so I doubt the budget will allow such luxuries, and risks, as this.

Hardly a luxury since we have nothing going on attacking wise on our right side, and as far as risk goes Sancho is the closest you’ll get to “risk free”. Also, I doubt he’ll be available “in a couple of years”, he’s hot commodity, there are fewer talents and as such prices are inflated and big clubs often compete for the same players, also, United has not been at the summit of football for a while now

I doubt he's going anywhere this summer. Got a long time left on his contract, no pressure to sell and he isn't going to push for a move. One more season and we pick him and Rice up next summer after this one. This one we go for Felix at Benfica, that right back from Crystal Palace and a CB or MC.

Always find it exciting to sign these type of players. If we get a chance to sign him, we should grab it. We've taken risks before in players like Rooney and De Gea and they ended up paying off much more than signing ready made players like Sanchez.

Sometimes it's easier to get a youngster game time in a position where there's a lesser amount of pressure to help him adapt to the pace and physicality of the PL, since it's quite a big step up from the U18s/U23s to senior football.

Fletcher was always supposed to be a central midfielder, but his first period in the first team saw him play on the right wing a lot because he hadn't yet adapted physically to the Premier League.

Introducing Greenwood to the right wing would allow him to adapt while not having the same goalscoring expectation on him as you would if he played as a striker. Putting him on as a striker could lead to a drop in confidence if he doesn't hit the ground running in terms of goalscoring, plus you'd have to rely on the wing players to provide the goals for the team when he is playing. Knocking his confidence from the beginning is definitely something that could stall his development, much more so than getting game time in a position he's used to but isn't his favoured one.

My point was he's a luxury from the point of view with his potential valuation, if we were well stocked elsewhere then fair enough, but we need a CB, RB, CM, and a RW as a minimum, and I personally i'd have said the CB will be the one we spend the most on, so maybe someone like Costa on a cheap buy, or loan, might tide us over on the right for now, whilst we spend the big money elsewhere, and Sancho is left where he is to hopefully develop a bit more, that is unless the Saudis do actually buy us, in which case it's a free for all.

We have looked more solid defensively under Ole than we did under Mourinho, maybe it’s cause the team as a whole is playing better, and I do think we still need a CB, but honestly speaking, in my opinion, a RW should be prioritised over a CB. At CB we have Lindelof, Smalling, Bailly, Jones, and potentially Rojo and kids like Tuanzebe that will return. You could argue none of them are of the highest quality, although Lindelof is developing nicely, but there are options there at least, some are even “decent”.

In contrast, we have tried to slot a bunch of square pegs in our RW hole, and it has been like that for years. Majority of our attacking play is conducted through the left and that makes us not only predictible and relatively easy to defend against, but it adds incredible amounts of pressure on Pogba and/or Martial to produce something. Capable teams will know to nullify them and we come tumbling down like a house of cards as we all witnessed against PSG.

And again, I doubt Sancho, playing the way he is playing, will be available in a couple of seasons. He will likely move soon, and if he doesn’t, the competition for him will be ferocious.

If it depended on me our priorities in the transfer market would be RB, followed by Sancho, and then a Matic replacement, and then a CB.

Greenwood will be used sparingly next season and won't be ready to start. So there's definitely a slot available on the right for Sancho. Dalot can switch back to right back when he's ready.
Lord knows how long Pogba will stick around for so it's good to get some quality young players in if the opportunity to buy arises

Hope we get this kid, people saying we have Chong well yeah but pretty soon Mata and Sanchez (sooner than later) will be gone so having 2 quality young and hungry talented kids is something of a no brainer tbh.

People pinning their hopes on youth players that are yet to kick a ball for the seniors or have barely done so are so deluded. How many times do talented youth players fail to make the step up? Sure, one of them MAY work out but even one isn't a guarantee.

Even our most successful youth product in recent years could quite easily be a squad player for a few years had we had a top striker. A very good squad player mind, but still.

It’s a misconception that it’s easier for young players to adapt out wide. If Greenwood is a natural striker, then playing him from the right is far more likely to knock his confidence from the beginning - especially in this team where we basically only look to build play and support teammates adequately down the left side.

The argument for playing him on the right wing surely revolves around the fact that we have no one making that position their own - it is the most available space in the attack. Nothing to do with pressure/ expectations/ adapting physically to the league.

Unless that position is a natural fit for Greenwood and it’s realistic to be looking for him to establish himself as a starter next season there, we need to be looking to bring someone in.

He's played on both wings loads (two-footed). I don't think there's a problem adapting to the position.

The point is that Greenwood often comes in from either side, so having him starting in a right-sided role wouldn’t be unnatural for him. He’ll be expected to interchange with the others though, but there’ll be a lot less pressure on him to score goals if his starting position is on the right rather than up front, similar to Lingard who doesn’t have a goal scoring burden like Rashford or Lukaku have

Yes, it’s quite obvious that it’s more natural to introduce him to a position that is fairly natural to him because there’s not a nailed down starter in that role. Anyone who would want him to start in the striker role ahead of Rashford as we’re chasing fourth spot is mental.

I do agree with the last bit though, we should definitely get someone who can perform in that role and make it his own, and I definitely believe that there’s a spot for both that player and Greenwood in the squad, especially if both Mata and Alexis are moved on in the summer. Having five players who can play across the front three (plus Lukaku) would be one hell of an improvement on our current situation where an injury to Martial automatically forces Rashford out to the left side and reduces our ability to press from the front since Lukaku’s not as good at it as Rashford is. I’m all in favour of buying Sancho and if Greenwood is good enough then he’ll force his way into the squad regardless. Over a 60 game season there are 180 starting possibilities for a player who can occupy all three roles, so even if Greenwood (hypothetically, lets not get ahead of ourselves) is fourth choice he’s looking at a minimum of 40 games.
