Jack Rodwell | Sold to City

No. I've seen Smalling play. I've also seen Rodwell play. Both are good. Rodwell is better. The use of 'I' in the sentence indicates it's my personal preference, not an assumption of the 'averageness' of Smalling. Not too difficult to fathom.

How much do you anticipate that Jack Rodwell, future manchester united legend, would cost? I think we bought another one of those from everton and it was expensive.

If your point was to dissuade by referencing Rooney's expense, you've surely felled your own argument. Rooney's value has been double that paid, if not more.

Not saying Rodwell is like-for-like, but you're the one making the comparison.

All great if you have £30 million to spunk on a player.

We chose to spend £7 million instead. There's a reason for that.

He'd cost more. That doesn't alter my original statement of preference.

I don't know why everyone thinks it's one or the other.

Rodwell is a midfielder, Smalling is a defender. Smalling was available cheaply now, Rodwell will cost a lot more when he's more developed at a later date.

Not really comparable players or signings in any way, and signing one doesn't mean we won't at some point sign the other.

And sometimes you get what you get, not what every club in the league wanted.

Sometimes what you got still turns out to be pretty fantastic too and because you paid a third as much, you have more to work with in other areas.

I'm sure we'd all have prefered Rodwell.

Just like I'm sure we'd all have prefered Ronaldinho instead of signing Cristiano Ronaldo.

feck me, this crap still? Signing Ronaldhino wouldn't have stopped the club from signing Ronaldo. It would have been Saha most likely. There wouldn't have been a need to sign a forward in January. The club still went for Robben that winter and would have signed him if not for some lowball offer or have many forgotten this?

:wenger:

Yes..... add an 'inho' to the end of it and I'd wanking myself to death!

He has a porn star name. How can that be a bad thing?

We should sign Jack Rodwell, and Rod Fanni.

I'm sure we'd all have prefered Rodwell.
No. They don't play the same position, neither are they the same type of player.

Just like I'm sure we'd all have prefered Ronaldinho instead of signing Cristiano Ronaldo.
Hell no. W'e'd have all preffered having both. No thanks to that bastard Kenyon.

Quite...but my original comment was something along the lines of:

Scenario A: I log onto the computer and SSN says we've signed Rodwell

Scenario B: I log onto the computer and SSN says we've signed Smalling

I'd prefer scenario A if I had the choice.

This does not mean I dislike scenario B...as yourself and the erudite Brwned seemed to ignore, in preference to some strange attempt to imply otherwise

No. Because he has never had Rodwell's abilties. Wanting him to remain a defender is like saying you'd have preferred a player like Keane to have been a center back.

I disagree. Rodwell have a bigger chance of becoming world class as a defender than as a midfielder. As a midfielder - central midfielder like Carrick/Alonso/Gerrard etc - is all about making the right decisions and movement without the ball. The movement without ball is what might seperate a Jenas from an Alonso, and it demands more from a players understanding of the game than beeing a defender. Rodwell has fantastic abilities on the ball, and is almost perfect in terms of physique, but its almost impossible to determine if he will have the brain to cut it in midfield for a club like Manchester United. At the moment he is very, very raw.

According to Capellos mentor - Arrigo Sacchi - even Gerrard lacks the know-how of how to move in central midfield.

Fair enough. For me though He has all the tools to become a world class DM. A position that has so lacked in quality for ages that people mistook Makelele for a proper one. I truly doubt he would be as heralded as CB.

Well Gerard was never intelligent enough to play as a proper midfielder. This boy for me doesn't seem have this problem at this stage.

Right well we have Paul Pogba coming through who looks like he could become a monster player for us. Then we have Evans and Smalling in defence coming through. Rodwell looks like he is too good to miss out on but where would he fit in to our team if Evans, Smalling and Pogba all fulfill their potential?
Would a central midfield containing Pogba and Rodwell have enough creative attacking threat like Carrick gives us while Fletch does most of the defending or do those that have seen Rodwell frequently this season see him alongside Smalling in defence ahead of Evans in the team?
And these are all big ifs as Man City will make Everton and Rodwell a ridiculous offer come the summer without a doubt!

Is Rodwell's future in midfield or defense, because I keep hearing both claims?

Rodwell's compared himself to Rio, and Moyes has said he sees his future as a centre back but isn't ready to play there yet because if the competitiveness of the league and the importance of having experience in that position.

Who knows though, he's said himself he's enjoying playing as a midfielder and even though he might move back to centre back it's not certain.

Really can't see that happening, he'll have to be a terrific player to be better than Evans.

Its a difficult discussion, and one probable have to define a DM first. But I thought Xabi Alonso was a brilliant DM before Mascherano came to Liverpool.

Regarding exciting midfield prospects, Nuri Sahin have taken me by surprise when I've seen him play this season. He has really matured as a player.

I completely agree. Those were my thought too.

That's good to hear. I've always thought him to be an outstanding talent. But he had lost his way a bit. Kinda like Anderson has been doing of late.

The English Matthäus perhaps?

Just read that they are reporting on Talksport, Rodwell is at Carrington right now, finalizing a 16Mil Move. Although considering Talksport's history, it's 99% Percent Bollocks

Been reliably informed that he's at Carrington atm

I've got Talksport on

Had it on all afternoon, and H+J always invite people to text in any rumours they like, so I wouldn't read much into this at all, the only thing is that they've been taken aback by the fact that they've had so many variations on the Rodwell rumour
