JACK RODWELL has already got Rio Ferdinand's shirt - now he wants to play alongside him for England.
The Everton star gave fans a glimpse of the future with a terrific full debut and a goal in boss Stuart Pearce's Under-21s' 1-1 draw against Germany.
Rodwell bossed Psycho's midfield on Monday to show why Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger were sniffing around before Toffees boss David Moyes handed him a huge five-year deal in February.
Like Manchester United and England ace Ferdinand, Rodwell, 18, can play in the middle of the park, but prefers to operate as a ball-playing centre-half.
Rodwell wasted no time in nabbing Rio's shirt after Everton beat United on penalties in the FA Cup semi-final.
And now, with his first taste of tournament football in the bag, the Southport-born star is desperate to emulate his hero by making the step up into the seniors.
Fabio Capello is already a big fan and Rodwell said: "I can play defensive midfield but I also feel I could play as a box-to-box midfielder.
"To be honest, I don't look up to anyone who plays in that position. I look up to Rio Ferdinand. I always played at the back and, from a young age, I have always wanted to play like him.
"I've started to play in midfield and Rio did the same when he was younger and then moved back.
"I was on a high anyway after we beat United in the semi but I went straight over to get Rio's shirt. He gave it to me so I was buzzing. He took mine as well!"
Rodwell is yet another impressive product of Everton's academy and is set to be an integral part of Moyes' side next term.
The Scot has big hopes for this confident, focused star in the making, who has been at Goodison since the age of SIX and was a ball boy just four years ago.
He added: "I started playing as a youngster with my dad. He was a ball player back in those days but he couldn't really be bothered playing. He didn't play pro but I heard he could have, he just didn't have the right attitude.
"He realised he didn't really take the chance so he's made sure I've stuck to it. He keeps my feet on the ground. I've not done anything yet so I've got to keep working."
Boss Pearce has some tough choices to make in midfield ahead of Friday's semi-final clash following Rodwell's supershow.
