Jack Rodwell | Sold to City

Sorry chief i don't mean to doubt you, any other youngster catch your eye? At the moment some people might think you're just mentioning names that anyone who's watched match of the day would have heard of..
Yea. Naught to do really. Thing is though the others I could mention have never even made the first team bench. Meaning they are like Matt James of our reserves, who look good at that level but are unknown quantities beyond that.

If I must name one any way I'd say their young goal keeper. Some guy with a German sounding name. Stubhaug or summat. I have no idea where he is from. He has looked oustanding a few times.

]And Vaughan got a series of quite nasty injuries if i recall that hampered his progress. Knee ligaments or something.
That explains a lot. That's quite a pity actually:(

Rodwell's made one appearance in the FA Youth Cup. Baxter's made 1. Gosling none.

Are there other youth games you get? Everton reserves?

Rodwell and Gosling played a fair bit in the first team this season, such were the first team injury problems.

Collison of West Ham is going to be a hell of a player, if we're on the subject of promising young English players.

He has a good frame, that will fill out some more. He has a languid elegance ala Carrick, but he also likes to get forward not too dissimilar to Lampard.

I think the future of English football is bright if these boys carry on on their current developmental trajectories.

I really like the look of Collison and Rodwell.

Collisons welsh though

Jack Rodwell...in "Boogie Nights" wasn't that the name Dirk Diggler was going to use in new movies?

...no, after an imdb search it was Brock Landers and Chest Rockwell...nevermind

Yes. There's some Asian tv network here that has coverage of reserve games from sides like Everton. So from time to time I come across 'em games. Naturally though youth and reserve football from the big 4 dominates the airwaves.

how's he performing in the u21's, anyone?

i see he scored in the most recent game, fair play to him. his post game interview was fairly impressive too, he seems like a decent bloke.

He only made his debut in the U21's against Azerbaijan earlier this month, coming on as a sub, and then his full debut was last night.

He's Norwegian. Lars Stubhaug. Went to Everton as a 15-year old I think. 18 or something now? Last I heard he wasn't getting his contract renewed with Everton but I might be mistaken on this one.

You're right - he was released

'Lars has continued to feature in reserve team squads, making one start for the second string.'

Sounds great.

Man, Moyes deserves accolades for the way he handled their injury crisis. At one point he had no strikers:eek:
Moyes is a quality manager. I really admire him how he always gets that group so organised and mentally strong. Would be interesting to see him with better resources at his disposal. I know people criticise the fellaini signing but in all fairness, he did well for them last season and suited them to the tee.

JACK RODWELL has already got Rio Ferdinand's shirt - now he wants to play alongside him for England.

The Everton star gave fans a glimpse of the future with a terrific full debut and a goal in boss Stuart Pearce's Under-21s' 1-1 draw against Germany.

Rodwell bossed Psycho's midfield on Monday to show why Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger were sniffing around before Toffees boss David Moyes handed him a huge five-year deal in February.

Like Manchester United and England ace Ferdinand, Rodwell, 18, can play in the middle of the park, but prefers to operate as a ball-playing centre-half.

Rodwell wasted no time in nabbing Rio's shirt after Everton beat United on penalties in the FA Cup semi-final.

And now, with his first taste of tournament football in the bag, the Southport-born star is desperate to emulate his hero by making the step up into the seniors.

Fabio Capello is already a big fan and Rodwell said: "I can play defensive midfield but I also feel I could play as a box-to-box midfielder.

"To be honest, I don't look up to anyone who plays in that position. I look up to Rio Ferdinand. I always played at the back and, from a young age, I have always wanted to play like him.

"I've started to play in midfield and Rio did the same when he was younger and then moved back.

"I was on a high anyway after we beat United in the semi but I went straight over to get Rio's shirt. He gave it to me so I was buzzing. He took mine as well!"

Rodwell is yet another impressive product of Everton's academy and is set to be an integral part of Moyes' side next term.

The Scot has big hopes for this confident, focused star in the making, who has been at Goodison since the age of SIX and was a ball boy just four years ago.

He added: "I started playing as a youngster with my dad. He was a ball player back in those days but he couldn't really be bothered playing. He didn't play pro but I heard he could have, he just didn't have the right attitude.

"He realised he didn't really take the chance so he's made sure I've stuck to it. He keeps my feet on the ground. I've not done anything yet so I've got to keep working."

Boss Pearce has some tough choices to make in midfield ahead of Friday's semi-final clash following Rodwell's supershow.

splendid!! :D

Linked with him in one of the Sunday rags today.

I don't. Was just sayin' like...

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is chasing Everton defender Jack Rodwell.

The Daily Mail says Ferguson is already targeting Everton’s 18-year-old utility player Rodwell as one for the future and has asked close associates for reports on the teenager’s personality and potential.

Rodwell, who signed a five-year deal at Goodison Park in February, is also being tracked by Chelsea and Liverpool.

He has made his name as a defensive midfield player, but it is thought he has the potential to develop into a classy central defender in the future.

Any move by Ferguson for Rodwell would be hugely controversial, given the furore that surrounded Wayne Rooney’s switch from Everton to United in 2004.

Who knows, if we were to make a bid, Moyes may sell knowing in a few years he could well be managing Rodwell again

in all honesty though he is a young player we should be keeping a very close eye on. I think he's quality, very good engine good on the ball keeps things ticking over not really flashy a very competent player for his age and with more games he's only goign to get better, moyes will most likely want silly money though

I've no idea if it's even slightly true, but I'd love to have him here, even for big, big money.

Dya think hes shown enough thus far ? I think I prefer to wait another season. Im about 80% convinced at the moment, he defo has that certain something that marks him out from his peers.

I just wonder is it a bit too early to commit to a player that will require a 15-25million pound fee to obtain.

Then again if he did sign him Im sure we'd hear from the manager "Ay, we've been watching the boy for years now"!!!

I know what you mean. But I also accept (sadly) that English players will always command an inflated fee, and I'm much rather we spent large on Rodwell, than on other players we've been linked with such as Cahill.

I'd say I'm about 80% as well, but sometimes you have to take big risks to get big rewards. If he did end up becoming a top centre back we'd be completely sorted with Evans and Rodwell for years, and that'd be a massive reward.

I really can't see any other player in his age group that looks as promising, and the fact it'd continue to give us a British spine would be a big plus.

I just think we'd regret it if we let him go to another big club, and Carvalho and Carragher aren't exactly spring chickens any more either so they could be in for someone soon enough.

There's also a weird... I don't know, feeling I guess, that I get with Rodwell. His name just fits for some reason... Which is about as stupid a reason as you could have to spend a huge wad of cash on an 18 year old

I am a fan of Rodwell, he's always looked the part for both Everton and the England U21's. The thing is though i've only really seen him play as a DM, not seen him play at the back so wouldn't be able to comment. What i can say with certainty is that he can look after himself, has good vision with his passing and very neat footwork. Whether he's worth looking at for us is a different matter, Evans is a class above him in my opinion. Coming here could push him to that level though, so we'll have to wait and see.

Sorry Brwned but he's been playing as a defensive midfielder hasn't he? If he hasn't even proven he's good enough to be a first choice center back for a side like Everton then we can't risk him "developing" into that role here, we'd be leaking a fair few goals and we just can't afford that luxury. Who knows if he'd even become a good center back here, let alone a world class one. As for the big fee, Rooney's was understandable but for an U-21 international, it's anything but understandable. If Ralphie and co are right and we're skint then we certainly will be looking at a non English option ala Arsenal.

He's naturally a centre back but can play in midfield too. It's no surprise really that Moyes would rather go with more experience at the back rather than with Rodwell at the minute but he has played at the back for them before and done very well too.

As a midfielder he'll go on to be very good, as a defender he'll easily be one of the best in the country. Just about him getting that bit of experience.

Yes. £15 million at the end of the season is a possibilty if he performs extremely well from now until then, but £20-25 million at that stage is just not going to happen. The idea that we would pay £20 million + for a defender who hasn't even clocked up 30 league games is insane. Yes, it's all well and good taking risks, but the risk has to be weighed up against the potential and the likelihood that he will be worth it.

The list of players who have looked very good at the early stages of their career, only to end up mediocre or less than mediocre is a very long list.
