Jack Rodwell | Sold to City

He has United signing written all over him. Fergie doesn't like creative midfielders who can run with the ball.

£25M would be a gamble but it may well be seen as a steal if he develops into the player many of us believe he can become. Think of it this way, he has the potential to be the future of the England midfield with Wilshire, if he explodes into consistent form for Everton the price will skyrocket and City and Chelsea will likely be able too offer to much for us to compete, and then we will have missed out on one of the top English midfielders of the next decade.

The other side of this coin though is that we'd still need another midfielder in the summer.

whispers on Twitter that Rodwell to United is a done deal for the summer at 25million.

Far too much for him imo, especially as he won't solve the creativity issue in midfild; we'll still need to spend fairly big on another midfielder even if we do sign Rodwell.

What whispers?

Would love this to be true.

Has anyone considered that signing a top class defensive midfielder would shed some defensive responsibilities from whoever he's playing alongside? Rodwell may not have the creativity that we're looking for, but putting him alongside Carrick or Anderson, they wouldn't be forced into defensive roles nearly as much and would be more free to get forward and create chances. He'd essentially play the role that Hargreaves was meant to in the squad. It'd certainly have done loads of good against Chelsea and Liverpool to have a player like that available to us.

I'd love to see the type of 4-4-2 we could play with the a Rodwell / Anderson or Rodwell / Fletcher central midfield. Tons of mobility, pace, bite, and creativity (despite not being from the continent with spiky hair or accent marks in their names) that would give license to attack to the wingers and forwards.

A couple of Everton fans I know say he's been dogshit this season (when he's played) and they'll be delighted if we spent anywhere near £20m on him.

Hasn't he been injured a large part of the season? And Everton in general have been rather shit.

Twitter as a source is rubbish
I'd be surprised if we spent that much on him considering the hype has died down a bit.

*expect him to score against us now :(

I don't see any creativity from the pairings you mentioned. Lots of bite and pace yes, creativity very little.

Ando has a fair bit I believe, especially when he's given more license to get forward and sheds his defensive duties. I also think that given a run of games, he'll take the next step in his game, much the same as Nani has done. Fletcher is pretty underrated in terms of creativity. He currently sits 3rd behind Nani and Rooney with 8 assists in all competitions. Those two have 10 assists between them in all competitions this season, twice as many as our supposedly 'creative' midfielders in Scholes (4) and Carrick (1).

Rodwell is technically very assured. I think he could play in a variety of roles and give us critical composure and strength.

When it comes to these sort of signings then I trust in SAF like no other.

He hasn't really got it wrong yet.

Scholes is ten times the passer and creator of any player in the squad, save Nani. Your stats clearly show just how stats don't always measure up the real performances. An assist can be a simple five yard lateral pass to set up a tap-in goal. Or a cross. Or a fluke deflection that lands right at the feet of a striker.

Carrick is not a creative midfielder. He's got a decent pass on him and can make the spectacular long range pass, but he's nowhere near Scholes. Neither is Anderson, Fletcher, etc.

Stats will make Roy Keane appear to be an average midfielder when those that watched him perform know better.

Considering it's where most stories break now, that's clearly wrong. Just because people follow the wrong people doesn't change the fact it's the fastest news outlet there is now.

What sort of injuries has he struggled with? Unless they're somehow clearly related to growing/filling out it would be crazy to spend that kind of dosh on him. Tremendous potential though.

I'm not trying to discredit Scholes in any way. He's my favorite player at United and I definitely appreciate and understand his role and abilities. All I'm saying is that for all his pinpoint 60 yard passes, he doesn't play close enough to goal anymore to directly create as many chances as he once did. He could play 10 brilliant diagonal balls a match, but if they all end with Nani being stood up by a full-back or Rooney taking them wide and crossing into a crowded box, they've essentially gone to waste. So in that regard, I'd much prefer the midfielder who gets into the box and sets up a goal with a simple pass rather than the flashy long pass that leads to nothing. Either way, the long and short of it is that Scholes may not even be back next season, so we need someone creating chances in and around the box the way he used to.

Assuming we sign Rodwell (since this is the Rodwell thread and the whole reason I'm posting this is for a hypothetical situation with him in our midfield), it'll fall to his midfield partner. Will Fletcher or Anderson be as good as Scholes was? No. Absolutely not. But no one in the world will and I think one of those two could be good enough to keep United performing at the level we're accustomed to. Scholes was a once-a-generation talent, maybe once-in-a-lifetime if you want an English sucessor.

The reason he isn't looking for assists all the time is because he is patient, and knows that we are much more threatening when we attack from the wings, hence why he very often quickly distributes the ball to the wide-men when he gets the ball.

He can do that now if he wants. He just doesn't and never will no matter who the partner.

ALEX FERGUSON has reached an agreement in principle to sign Everton whizkid Jack Rodwell for £25million.
As revealed in SunSport, Manchester United made a move to land the Goodison midfielder in January.

But the Merseysiders asked them to come back in the summer as he was so vital to them for the rest of the season.

They also told United their initial £15m offer was nowhere near enough.

Rodwell, 20 yesterday, is one of the most sought-after Premier League youngsters and signed a new five-year Everton deal only last May.

But United chief Ferguson is so keen to land him he has persuaded the club's owners, the Glazer family, to up their offer substantially at the end of the season.

United have committed another £15m to a double swoop for Aston Villa forward Ashley Young, 25, and their 21-year-old defender Ciaran Clark.

Fergie, who faces Arsenal in the FA Cup today, also wants striker Danny Welbeck, 20, and midfielder Tom Cleverley, 21, back permanently when they end their loans at Sunderland and Wigan.

25Million is pretty steep for Rodwell tbh.

The Sun? I'm a more reliable source for christ sake.

Haven't seen anything from this kid to suggest he is anywhere worth 20-25 million

we really need to bringing in a midfielder with experience presence and someone who is ready to walk into the first team

rodwell hasnt even been a regular for everton

How old is he now? 20?

To be fair, i would rather Fergie spend the dosh on him than the Sunderland bloke, Jordan something

he is monster midfielder on my Fifa 11, fletcher rodwell sneijder

The inner muppet in me wants Fergie to spend it on Sanchez and Bale though. Tons of creativity and directness there, but that's for another thread

Buying Rodwell can wait, to be honest

Riiiiiiiiiiighht, so let's strengthen the part of the squad where we already have Nani, Valencia and Park? Rather than the centre of midfield that's hampered us all season?

Sanchez can play in the middle, especially at the tip of a midfield 3

Also buying central midfelders when we have Carrick, Fletcher, Gibson and Anderson? Besides, i don't know if there is any central midfielder of value and quality in the transfer market. Sneijder? We won't get him

Does one rule out the other ? If we for instance signed one extremely good winger and a class central midfielder - we wouldn't have a problem.

I would say we are an injury-free Valencia and a real quality midfielder away from matching any team in the world.

Why does this post reminds me of Bebe and Obertan's signings?

25Million is pretty steep for Rodwell tbh.

It is steep - but he will be a quality player. Good strike, very good in the air - 6ft2 - lightning quick and very composed on the ball.

But people seem to forget that he is 19 years old (turns 20 in late april) - a player like Beckham hadn't even made an impact at United at that age - Rodwell already has 60 league matches for Everton.

I still don't see what all the fuss is about with Rodwell.

I'm not saying that he won't become a good player or that he doesn't have potential. But I can't for the life of me see that he has played enough or proved enough to show that he would improve our team.

Rodwell will be phenomenal with a little patience and looks like he was born to play for United.

Maybe this will be what our midfield shall look like in a 433 next year and if buy Young then we wont be buying Bale also!!

--------------Rodwell------------------
------Fletcher/Ando---Cleverly-----
Nani---------Rooney------------Young

Without doubt.

I'd be happy to gamble on Rodwell as long as buy a more experienced midfielder too.

What would be the point gambling 25milloin on Rodwell? It's surely be better to promote from within and use the money, if we have to, to buy in quality experience because if you spend 20+ million on Rodwell, you narrow your options and the fact is we have promising midfielders.

I wouldn't be surprised to see us signing Rodwell and Young. Both English, both young enough to develop further and both (Young obviously more than Rodwell) Premiership proven. Signing Rodwell would probably mean no other central midfielder coming in IMO, will Fergie promote the youngsters?

He can be deployed as a centre-back as well, right?

If so, great buy, due to him being versatile. He's young, English and has years ahead of him to develop into an even better player. Premier League proven and will certainly add bite to our midfield.

I reckon he would be a Valencia-type signing. A player who will surprise many of us and make a lot of posters eat their words.

I'll be a muppet.

I'd say Rodwell, Young, someone like Modric and a goalkeeper would make it a very good summer.
