Jack Rodwell | Sold to City

Both of them seems to be running all over the place as box to box players, but the comparistion is simple, because they have two get playing time to deliver, and there are always two spots. Playing time for one would mean less for the other and that would make the developing part less likely. In many of the games Cleverley will get to start, a defensive midfielder wont be needed.

The last thing we need is a defensive minded midfielder, we have Fletcher for many years to come. Spending a fortune at him right now does not seem like a great deal to me. Anderson are rather talented defensivly as well.

If you've followed Rodwell since the start, it's not the defensive MF we were really looking for, we were all ready and also talking about converting him into a CB.

But as he's performance has gone, he has shone a lot of potential and has done VERY well in the MF, Fletch is good but if we have a young prospect there who looks like to be the certain future of England, we will definately move in for him.

Again, both Fletch and Rodwell are not all about defense, it's that they both have the stamina to do both, Fletch has gotten in the box quite often... ala Newcastles goal and long shot yesterday...

Rodwell also has the skill to help the front 2 aswell but he is definitely not a pure creative MF.

Cleverly still hasn't found his favored position so basically we're just blending him in by playing him on the flanks just like Fletch...

I still dont' get the point where Cleverly will start and no Defensive MF will be needed ? Means he can do that box - to - box work in the center of MF ?

Can't see Cleverley being used in a defensive stance. He might not be an advanced midfielder bur he will go forward quite a lot. In a few years Rodwell and Cleverley could be an effective partnership

Fergie, Scholes, and Rooney speeding out of Carrington on the way to Liverpool.

too nice of a car. all the wheels will be nicked even if they stop for 2 minutes to throw rodwell in the boot.

The thing why most of the Caf are rating Rodwell is that he has youth on his side, I see a lot more in Rodwell than a 20 year old Fletch and look at what Fletch turned out to be with the guidance of SAF.

Rodwell has it all in his tank to become our very own Viera ( Possibly we also have Pogba ) but actually he has more pace and he just has that sense of calmness in MF...

Looks a lot more matured than anyone I've seen playing MF and he's just 20 FFS.

With Carrick in his late 20's and Hargreaves possibly back in 3 weeks, I think going for Rodwell would only benefit us.

didn't see fabregas 17-20 did you?

Ozil mark 2, nothing will come of this mark my words lol

Difference is Ozil said he preferred to go to Spain which is why we were always going to be second choice. Rodwell being English means he will probably look to stay in the country. That just leaves us and Chelsea as genuine contenders (dippers won't get him, and Arsene won't pay English prices for him).

I think we have a good shot for him next summer. Hopefully Everton do terribly and we get a chance to clear some driftwood in our midfield (a particular permacrock) so Rodwell knows he will get his chance in midfield.

Although they don't exactly play the same position or are any way similar players, but I rate Rodwell higher then Wilshire.

I'd rate Rodwell's physique more than Wilshire... :)

Still, both are incredibly talented and if they both fulfill their potential either at Everton, either we sign Rodwell or either at Arsenal, I think England have a bright future.

First of all I doubt that we are signing Rodwell this season. Stating that if we do sign him up then I would be happy. He seems to be a very promising prospect who would add class to the team. He may not be regular first team material yet but the talent is there to be seen. Not to forget that he can play in defense if needed.

Everytime I've seen him (three or four times) he looked alright, nothing outstanding, can anyone link me with some video highlights?

It be truely remarkable if we managed to sign rodwell. everton have no need to sell.

Also didnt Rodwell sign a new contract not too long ago?

I at least know he spoke of his desire to stay at Everton

The one transfer rumour that's actually given me some trouser activity this summer. Shame it's probably the media looking for some drama at the end of the window

mind you 10m + carrick is very good offer. if i were them i would be tempted.

OK rodwell is a very promising player but he s not the finished article yet.

if we did that deal, we would need Anderson to cop on to himself and start producing, as we would be losing the only real passing CM apart from Scholes in the squad.

So this thread as now been chosen as a last hope for transfer junkies.

Fergie has just said that Scholes could play till 40...:D so for the next 3 years midfield should not be a problem...:D

Indeed, Carrick when on form keeps the team ticking. I guess Ferguson would know if he thinks Carrick has peaked. I think he'll still be at a the club on September 1st mind you.

I agree - I don't see this happening regardless of what the papers or Mark Lawrenson say.

I think there is a decent chance of Rodwell and someone like Defour coming in to the club over the next 12 months though, which could be excellent business. I see Defour as a more Carrick replacement than Rodwell would be. Rodwell would be a replacement for Hargreaves imo.

What are we basing the Rodwell love on?

I mean, what has he actually done that puts him ahead of, erm, I dunno, an Anderson or a Cleverley, for instance?

For me, nothing much. But my point wasn't that we should get him, but that if we really, really, had to buy him, I'd rather part with Anderson and Gibson both, than Carrick, if it were up to me.

If I really had to, I'd rather give them Anderson and Gibson and £10M than Carrick and £10.

Same here but at times i get the feeling that fergie 's not entirely happy with Carrick ...but maybe its just my impression and nothing else

But the inclusion of Anderson in such a formula is absolutely ridiculous.

I mean, suggesting that Carrick could go in part exchange is ludicrous enough. But Anderson is only 22 years old - and whilst his time here has been up and down, there has certainly been enough good moments for us to retain a little faith in him. Then there is the fact that, despite rumours suggesting his attitude is poor, Fergie has praised him to high heaven for his application since returning to training.

Rodwell has really done nothing in the game to justify this sort of talk - it's absurd. In fact, whilst he has had good games, he has had some stinkers too (granted, this is normal for a young player, which is of course what Anderson is too).

The fact that people are talking about part exchanges using Carrick (an experienced and quality player) and the likes of Anderson/Gibson betrays a real lack of understanding about football, IMO. It reflects an absurd fetish with transfer deals and a desperation to be able to laud a big money signing - irrespective of whether we actually need them, or whether they are worthy of the sums being bandied around.

I don't really know what's the fuss about him. Are people judging him based on that goal he scored against us? I mean with all the hype, he's not even starting games for Everton of all clubs regularly.

We're three games into the season. There's a lot of football to be played yet and Fergie loves to rotate the midfield.

It's been easy for us to stick with Scholes-Fletcher because there has been a full week in between games.

Carrick's CS performance, and subsequent talk in the media, would indicate that he is on a mission this season.

I'm not impressed,

what is the big deal with this lad?

Dunno man.

I mean, when you're talking £20m fees or swap deals with established players, then you're usually dealing with players that have really stamped their mark on the game...

Rodwell... hasn't.

There's a good post from Brwned in here that sums up why so many rate Rodwell so highly, his composure in midfield for a lad of 19 combined with his physical gifts are the main reasons, plus being English he's seen as less likely to sod off to Spain once we make him great.

I'm not doubting his potential at all. I've been quite impressed with his ability on the very few occasions that I've seen him. I agree that he plays with an old head on young shoulders.

But to suggest that we should offer up the likes of Carrick or Anderson (plus cash!) for him is absolutely ludicrous. Both of our players have achieved more than Rodwell and in the case of Anderson, I'd argue he's going to turn out the better player.

I blame Championship/Football Manager for these debates we have about player exchanges. It actually happens extremely infrequently in real football.
