Jack Grenglish

It will be tough for him to get a look in for England but he does seem to have kicked on a bit this season so you never know. It is very hard to look good in a team like Villa too.

He was obviously always more English looking at this

Exactly, no Irishman would ever behave in such a manner......

its such a kick in the teeth for Ireland though who helped develop him. No problem if he wants to play for England but he would've been signed as a professional at 16/17 where he has to make a decision on what team to commit to so why can't he commit to a country then. Unfortunately the answer is he wanted to have on his cv he was playing international youth football as it gives him more experience and is more valuable to his club. However he was probably not good enough for England at that point.

Yeah, why aren't these 16 year olds thinking about what they do to the hopes of a nation. So shameless of them.

To be fair ireland have benefitted from a lot of players whom were not quite good enough for England over the years and they were happy to take them. I can see why Irish fans would be dissapointed but this was always the likely outcome.

are there actually any Englishmen/women on here who are the ones saying he's shite or is it just upset and angry Irish? Personally chuffed to bits he's chosen England - whether he turns into the player he can be we'll have to wait and see but don't understand any Englishman on here coming out saying they don't want him for England etc.

His choice. Can't argue with him. Better to have players who want to play and give 100% no matter where they're born.

I dont know if its a fair comparison to say that us taking on the likes of Clinton Morrison or Matt Holland who had no chance of playing for the English national team is equal to England wooing a player we brought through the youth ranks. If anything its the fact we have taken the likes of Houghton, McCarthy and McGeady from Scotland that means we should just accept it.

a section of Irish Twitter folk have taken this with the good grace you have come to expect from the Internet.

Broken legs, "sleep with one eye open" "snake" the usual.

It's a shame for Ireland but Stevie Wonder saw that coming.

Anyone who doesn't rate him clearly hasn't watched him play outside of Match of the Day. He'll be at a top 6 side within the next two years.

Can't see why some are reacting so spitefully on Twitter and whatnot. He was born in Birmingham. His Dad was born in Birmingham and his mother is English as well. He is English.

There's always that side of things with twitter. Most match going fans I know couldn't give two f*cks. Personally Im just glad its finally put to bed. Far too much time and energy has been invested in the story already.

I just really hope we can secure Crowley future now....

Its a big risk as it is tougher to get into the England team, but its brave and shows that he is confident in his abilities enough to make it there. Its similar in a sense to what Pogba did when he left us. At a young age, going to a team with a brilliant midfield , and had he failed , would have ended in tears for him. Its a big risk, but sometimes , the bigger the risk, the bigger the reward.

An exciting youngster to watch. Reminds of Bolasie in that he is player that I enjoy watching but do not necessarily United to sign though.

Yeah that's why we've had such world class squads :)..

I can see why people are mad though, considering he's always represented Ireland as a youth.

what a waste of a career.....When England realize he will be nothing but the new James Milner then he will be public enemy No.1....At least with Ireland he would be the new Duff.................He'll be like Bruce....A world class player who no one ever remembers

I read somewhere that the Irish FA appoint a scout based in England with the purpose of finding talented young players who may be eligible to play for Ireland when they are older and this is how Grealish was reeled into this situation. They find them when they are young and impressionable and pull them towards there own nation. Though there is technically nothing wrong with this, I can imagine the English FA feeling irritated and might claim that this is potentially damaging for English football and will not want to lose their best prospects to another nation, which is why they have reigned Jack back in.

The Irish will quite rightly feel aggrieved that this kid has chosen Ireland from a young age and the country has shown a lot of faith in the lad (maybe a lot more than England). For Jack to switch allegiances at the final hurdle is a hard blow to take.
The English will argue though that he was born in England, it was an English football club in Aston Villa that invested so much in him and has the bulk of his career in English football, so maybe in a world where it is English football who gave his chance, then maybe he should offer something back to them.

Meh, fair enough really, his choice. Glad it's settled now.

Tell that to Bruce, Martin Keown and Gary Cahill.....Players who would have been remembered alongside the likes of Gazza etc but who no one will remember 20 years from now...Jonathon Walters, Ciaran Clarke adn Stephen Reid will have a bigger name in football 20 years from now than the likes of Grealish or Bruce will ever have sitting on the England bench

I'm highly disappointed but I still love the lad and will be cheering him on. I know he always had a place in his heart for Ireland and England and he always will. I just hope he wasn't swayed with all the commercial bullshit and chose who he wanted to represent and what will make him happy.

he actually got called up to the England U15 first, but got sent home ill and Ireland quickly snapped him up afterwards....sooooo technically we called him up first

On a serious note though, the development of his international career was done by him taking up a spot in the Irish teams. The inevitable threats of violence are out of order but I wouldn't blame a level headed fan for being a little bit miffed at the situation.

FFS - He played for your youth teams.

It's a pathetic thing to take ownership of.

Ireland has suffered from large periods of immigration, proportionally huge number. I wouldnt be surprised if we send scouts over to Australia in the future.
Anyway English clubs routinely trawl the underage sides over here. Let's say morally what you say about giving back to England since you were developed by an English club is correct, that's hardly fair on the Irish FA if Shamrock Rovers can't compete with Southampton.
My Brother in law was managing an u13 tournament in Derry last year, they got battered in the semi 8-0 and told the rival manager that even though he had a great team, it was the two midfielders that tore them apart.
'I agree', he said, 'one just signed for Chelsea and the other for Man United'

If anybody should understand the situation it's the Republic of Ireland fans.

You cant be serious.

No they won't

There will be paintings made by Irish tribes in their caves which will present IBJonnyWalters & c.o.

Literally had no idea who Jack Grealish was, had to google him and then I remembered that I've seen him dead pissed on twitter somewhere.

You're forgetting club football still exists. Bruce, Keown and Cahill are all bigger names than the ones you've mentioned, Cahill is even a guaranteed starter in the England line up as well.

I think the easiest thing to do would be to say that if you play u19 or u21 football you can't play until 23 for another country. Which is going to be when you stop being Eligable for youth football.

I'd have no problem with that.

There shouldn't be too many complaints from the Irish.

There aren't as far as I know. Although there is time yet for daytime radio to pick up on it and mobilise the masses of morons, like happened with the Henry handball.
