As we are seeing with Nunez playing for City and Liverpool is very tough for rugged strikers whose technical game isn’t quite top notch - I anticipate that Haaland could face a similar issue but he came from Dortmund where he would have probably ironed out that issue.

Toney isn’t someone whose going to be mobile enough to press, or participate fast enough to be a spearhead for Klopp or Pep. A lot of their football is played on floor, pass back and eye of the needle stuff.

Chelsea with their wing back system, Toney can in theory stay more centrally but even then you could argue they look more fluid with a Havertz and Toney would be a plan B there.

Atletico play a direct brand of football, they’re used to having quite physical forwards and with a partner next to him, Toney can act more as orthodox 9.

United - it’s a weird one because ETH is in many ways similar to Klopp and Pep but there’s a greater emphasis on crossing from the wingers themselves and he doesn’t like his teams to fanny around as much in possession which is why he’s been able to incorporate big target man strikers like Haller and do it well. So Toney could potentially work in his set up. It’s why I think Nunez would have done better here than at Liverpool. Having Bruno behind a proper striker makes more sense.

Thanks - do you have any idea about what striker we should target? There seems to be not much available.
 
He's dynamite for a lower table team playing simple counter attack football and needing somebody in the channels, making a nuisance of themselves, but he will never be good enough for a team expecting to challenge the league. He's not technical enough. I think he'll go to Arsenal one day and will be no more than average.
 
He’s a decent player and would be interesting to see what he can do with better players around him. Did he link up well with Eriksen?

He asked for my preference. He also correctly pointed out there are not many CF going around at the moment. If I was United, I'd be focusing on getting in players like Brozovic for CDM and for strikers - I would have wanted Richarlison. Now he's gone and someone like Nunez, you are probably looking for temporary fixes, i.e. a Tammy/Toney types, but with an eye out for the next big thing.

Would it have been a good shout for us to go in for him? Think he’d have done well here.

He's a really good player. Strong, can score, consistently brings others into play and he's technically sound too. Would have been a really astute move to bring him in.

 
Hope we are in. Am a huge Toney fan . People keep arguing about his goal scoring records from last year but he is now proving the doubters wrong on that aspect too.
 
Surely he’s getting an England call up soon? No other English striker quite like him.
 
The price was pretty good this window as well wasnt it? It will be a lot more next Summer.

This window 30m is practically free for a quality English striker playing as well as he is.
 
Think he's who Liverpool should have went for and used the rest of the Nunez cash to invest in the midfield.

Ivan Toney can be our Sebastian Haller equivalent. Haller became the perfect tip of Ten Hag’s spear at Ajax. The crosses from the wings always had a point man and made the dimensions of attack more dynamic. Ronaldo will hopefully do this for now. Think Toney ought be brought in asap when Ronaldo leaves.

Apparently it went up to 40 to 45 later in the window? Football Insider said Bentford had set the valuation at 30 at the start of the window with Brighton and Newcastle the primary interested parties. Probably went up when they saw what players were going for in the window, so you are right.

Wasn't even bad last year either. Got 12 in 33 for a mid-table side, a third of his team's goals, four less than Mané and five less than Kane. He's proven before that he's a goalscorer, set a Championship record in the promotion season. He's a handy striker, a good contender for next year's striker signing.
 
There's no way we will get Toney for 30m, 50m or even 70m - when we paid 80m for Maguire 2 years ago and and Antony 100m 5 days ago. Clubs now that we pay what ever it takes if we are desperate and because there is not many strikers out there available we will probably need to pay at least as much as we did for Maguire if we want him. I'm not discussing the point if he is the right man for Man United or if we need him (that we need a striker is obvious), just saying that whoever we go for, we will need to spend big money again.
 
Brilliant performance of him yesterday.. Becoming more and more convinced he would be a good #9 for us for years to come..
 
Think there will be teams in for him January. Probably Chelsea, the cnuts.

When Liverpool are paying 100m for Nunez you can fully understand why the market is now inflated
 
Good player and a good age. 27 if we sign him next season, so we would have the peak of his career.

Good on the ball and off the ball. Really good start to the season.

If we were ever to sign him, he would complete our forward line and have similar impact to way Saha did when he was fit.

The comparison comes to mind partly because of the hesitance with signing a striker from Fulham, much like the underrating of Toney for simply playing for Brentford.
 
Far better player than Nunez that there is little doubt.

He's a massive Liverpool fan too and the sort of signing they're renowned for. Early days, but I think Toney would have been a far shrewder signing for the scouse than Nunez.

Would love him at United.
 
When he was mentioned in the summer by a few people it got shot down, presumably because he's not very fashionable. Amazing how a few games changes things. He was pretty good last season so its odd.

The thing to keep in mind is he's not going to be a bargain. Brentford have no reason whatsoever to sell their best player for cheap as a now established club. I think it would cost a serious amount of dough and would have to be our main target for the summer. Maybe he's worth it.

90% of the forum would bring in Mitrovic today. While in the summer, his record in the Championship was just that, the Championship. Now his good start is a reason to buy him. Of course the Championship season is now positive as well, while previously not many cared about it.

That is how it works on here. If Mitrovic does not score the next 5 games, he is shit again. However, his game has bot changed much over the years. Silva has a system in place that helps him get the best out of him and is always playing him, but he is the same player he was years ago, with some better output.

I do like Toney, mostly for his all-round play. But it's worth being pretty wary of his goalscoring.

Of his 17 PL goals so far, 6 have been penalties. And those 11 remaining open play goals have been backed by weak underlying stats, being 30th percentile among striker in Europe's big 5 leagues for npxG last season. And last season he actually underperfomed that rather anaemic npxG, so it's not like he's suggested he's a particularly clinical finisher either.

Compare Toney's non-penalty stats per 90 last season (0.22G/0.25xG) to someone like Osimhen's over the last two in Serie A (0.64G/0.52xG and 0.57G/0.60xG) and you see a pretty stark difference in terms of open play goal threat. Even when he was having his best goalscoring season while playing for the best attack in the Championship, his per 90 open play goal rate still wasn't as good as either of those two Osimhen seasons.

And from our perspective that matters a lot, because the rest of our attack (Sancho, Antony and Bruno in particular) aren't exactly convincing open play goal threats either. We've build a side that needs a central goalscorer they can provide for.

I only watch him on highlights and he seems quite reliant on Penalties.

What do the fans see that he would bring to our play?
