Every time I see this guy play he looks a really tidy, accomplished footballer. His passing looks sublime (would be interested to see his stats). Has a fantastic eye for goal. Am amazed we are not after him as surely he could be bought from Seville (no disrespect to the club but they do need the cash and are not chasing down trophies).
......maybe in the summer when we buy the world.

18 months on his contract and stalling on a new one. Surely they would consider a decent bid.

I suspect the problem is that he has a low release clause in his contract, and we are waiting for it to expire so we can bid several million more.

That is only a problem if they have a leftback you want to sign too, apparently.

Whether you sign the leftback in question or not is besides the point.

This guy's situation seem's a little too good to believe doesn't it?.

Goal scoring centre mid who can pass well, assist regularly and is low on contract.

Sign the bugger up!... but no we probably wont bat an eyelid.

We need a DM more than an AM currently.

But even then, we need to offload quite some players before we can even start looking at players.

errm what? thats the most baffling analysis i have seen in months...a DM is least of our worries right now - Carrick,Fellaini, Jones, Fletcher all play a non creative role in the middle.

its creativity we want, 2 creative attacking midfielders in fact.

Carrick is getting older. Next season "might" be the last at his peak. Fellaini - usual cliche, not a DM, can't play in a 2 man midfield, blah blah. I don't want us to start expecting from Fletcher as it is. He has just been back after a life threatening situation, played a couple of games and you want him to be in the deep end? Naah. Jones is essentially a CB. He can do the job, but for how long?

And we have already seen how we cope without Carrick in this season. We need a player who can either play with Carrick, or take his place in the midfield. So in that sense, we need a DM, a defensive-minded CM before we even go for an AM.

i have not seen him play much.
but from what i have heard, read and youtube-d. He can pass, shoot, tackle, take a set piece. He is also a good leader. His stats are amazing. Is he really that good?
Let's sign him please. He is available. He will add value. Please moyesey, please!!

Yes he's very good, but maybe a bit less technical and flashy than some other players and thats why he isnt talked about as much. He's more effective than his countryman Modric ever was for example and he was a caf fantasy for years.

Marca are reporting that he's expected to sign a new deal with Sevilla, but that his release clause will go down to 25m Euros (it's currently 40m).

This type of contract clause downward negotiation is not unusual in Spanish clubs with potentially marketable players. It's a way to avoid players leaving on frees. It reassures the player that they can leave when they want. It protects the club from weeks of uncertainty and argument in the summer.

Basically he's sat on the shelf with a price ticket, and a "Buy Now" button.

Bump.

Scored a penalty at the weekend. So he's up to 9 goals, 8 assists.

However....

Am I attracted to England? At this point about Sevilla I don't care about another country, about another club. People know I'm happy in Sevilla, I'm really not under any pressure, my team-mates and all coaches see that I give my all on the pitch, I'm enjoying football here, I really love life in this city, so it is a great honour that there are signs of a new contract and that the board is really ready to sign me for an even longer period. We'll see what happens,

Here's a quote from his father... (his agent).

So Chelsea were also interested, although I imagine that move is now off since they signed Matic. Looks like this is dead for this window at least, gotta say, doesn't really sound like he wants to leave does it?
Sure... Until the interest becomes solid enough to get excited over. Nobody will choose to stay in Sevilla over a top premier league club IMO.

I dunno mate, Chelsea must have been after him this window considering they just bought Matic. So he must have turned Chelsea down at least. He's also the exact type of player we need at the club, so you'd think if he was available we'd also make a firm bid for him. We'll see what happens in the Summer. Sevilla seem to be trying to get Rakitic to sign a new deal which would increase the buyout clause by another 10/15m odd.

That last quite from his Dad, if you got it from the Sport Witness article I believe he was talking about when he was young not any recent interest.

If we wanted him, we would have gotten him in January. Seems to me like our main midfield targets for the summer will all come from clubs still in the champions league/competing for their domestic league.

This year is different though. Player's are not taking risks with a world cup coming up this summer!. Moving to a new country and club could cause them to lose form and their place in the squad. I can see why transfers were difficult this Jan.

All those players with the exception of Jones who is not a long term solution to the midfield are not DMs. Anyway its too restrictive to say we want a DM or AM, we want a midfielder who can play as part of a two man midfield who offers something defensively as well as going forward.

I used to watch him every week when he played in the BL.. Cant see what he will bring to improve us radically.. But at this stage any cm will do nicely.

We wouldn't have got him in January. He's their captain, they're in the running for a European place and he's not going to force his way out. It's the unhappy ones who leave in January. Nor would Sevilla have wanted to let him go, and if the Spanish press are right his release clause then was 40m Euros. In any case he's got a World Cup to prepare for and switching clubs/leagues isn't good preparation.

Sevilla have a contract for his renewal lined up and which they expect him to sign in the next week, but his release clause will go down when he signs. They've done the same thing in the past with other playersprior to sale. It's almost the exact opposite of what, "player signs new contract," normally means to us.

If we want him we can get him. I'm not sure we're even scouting him though.

Haven't really seen much of this guy to form an opinion. Looked good in Madrid vs Sevilla. Is he better than Kovacic though ?

Whenever I've seen him (about 4 matches this season, a few others in previous seasons), he's looked really good. I'd be very happy if we got him. 12 goals, 13 assists so far this season

Well he's obviously improved a lot since then. When I saw him in his first season at Sevilla he didnt look amazing, just good vision for a pass. Now he scores a lot of goals and tackles back too.

Last season he was Sevilla's best player, Negredo and Navas havent done badly at City... This year he's Sevilla's best player again. He has averaged 2.7 passes that were converted to shots, thats the most in la liga this season and you think of all the great passers in that league. In fact he's had a superior season to his countryman Modric in pretty much every way and he was a big favourite on here when he was at Spurs. He has also averaged the most crosses that were met by a teammate this season in la liga.

If we want him we can get him. I'm not sure we're even scouting him though.

Papers were saying during January that Chelsea, PSG, United and Liverpool had been scouting him.

Chelsea went out and bought Matic, PSG got Cabaye.

For me Rakitic is the perfect fit for us. Technical player, very good passing. He's a natural leader in the middle of the park and drives the team on, scoring important goals and assisting frequently. Doesn't mind getting the tackles in and have a pretty good number of interceptions (better than Vidal). He's exactly what we need. He also averages 7 crosses per game, so i'm sure Dave will like him.

Probably not your fault, but that man is a joke, I am sure our fellow Croatians will confirm it.

I am Croat, and I can only say, if Mr. Zidak wrote this (what he did), it is true.

Not sure he is the right type of player. We need more of a general.

He's a creative player that can run things for us.

Do you reckon we need more of a destroyer/a holder?

I imagine he'll love picking out the movement of Mata/Rooney/Januzaj/RvP plus he can get on the end of things and whack them from distance as well.
