Ivan Rakitic

I meant big clubs. He was being linked to us and Spurs at the time. Was he not that great at Schalke? He was monitored by bigger teams before Schalke also, but none took the plunge then either.

Ive tried answering that question earlier in this thread.

Got another 2 assists yesterday in a 4-0 win against Real Betis. This is a player that really would be the real deal for us if we signed him. Class player. Captain for Sevilla, 7 goals, 6 assists in 13 games. Sevilla are trying to tie him down to a 2 year contract extension as well, now is the time to strike and declare interest.

I agree he is a good player, but he plays in front of two midfielders... exactly where Kagawa should be playing for us, but where Rooney actually plays.

So, what's the logic in bringing Rakitic when Rooney is not going anywhere and using the spot for creative midfielders?

If we are going for a midfielder, has to be a box to box, that can fill a rol next to carrick or jones. Matic style

He has played thirteen games for Sevilla this year. Only four of them in front of two midfielders. The rest as a central midfielder. Snow even compared his performance for his NT to Carrick. A compliment to his utility one could say, and a plus for us. That is traits one get in Herrera and Fabregas, too.

That beeing said, his number of assists and key passes are to a huge extent a result of him taking a lot of free-kicks and corners.

ur right he plays in a 2 man midfield at times, but always with a pure destroyer next to him. So he could eventually play next to Jones, but next to Carrick, impossible (direct replacement maybe?). If a midfield of Carrick+fellaini/Cleverley is quite poor defensively, a carrick/rakitic would be very weak as well.

Anyway, im positive the solution for our midfield problems is stuck Jones as a defensive midfielder. He can be more important than Carrick in my opinion.

Nonsense. Carrick is a brilliant defensive midfielder, and Rakitic and Carrick would be a better solution defensivly than Carrick and Scholes was. Rakitic has also played next to Iborra several times in a two-man midfield -is he a pure destroyer?

Furthermore, he plays next to Modric in the NT.

so? usually as the most advanced player of their midfield.

Kovacic or Vukojevic are the ones that play deepest, anchoring the midfield.

Are u getting a fee if we contract Rakitic?

PS. plus croatia is pretty shitty team...

Definetly not as the most advanced in the last couple of games. Kovacic played of the striker in the game against Iceland (in the first game they played Eduardo and Mandzukic infront of Modric and Rakitic).

I understand sceptism towards his ability, but I do not agree at all that he would not be a fit to Carrick.

i don't doubt his ability really... i know he is a very good player and i would like to see a midfield of Jones+Carrick+Rakitic (and a lot of others midfielders, including kagawa), but one of those spots is used by Rooney, and for the long term it seems, so we have to think of that before looking for targets.

the only time we have looked a decent team against good opposition, is with Jones in midfield, and that's not a coincidence.

He would certainly be a step above Anderson anyway!. Having a player from midfield who can spot a pass, and score a goal is so important.

We have not had a decent scoring CM in years!

The obsession with midfield two needs to stop, we can't spend the next decade looking for a player who will fit in a 442 as we should be doing our best to move away from that formation as soon as possible. Rooney occupying a place at the peak of midfield three isn't an argument either, he'll be gone in a year and a half at most and we cannot build a team around him.

If Rakitic is good, then we should try and get him. I'm pretty sure he'd be able to adapt to a slightly different role, most players are.

I hold out hope that we can nab Ross Barkley in the summer and mold him into a box to box central midfielder.....But signing a stop gap in January would be very nice although Carrick and Jones in midfield have looked like a decent pairing to get us through the season but with the injury record of Jones then you can't count on him too much to play most of our remaining games.

Sign a young, exciting English midfielder and play him out of position? Can't we just do that with Nick Powell instead?

Papers in Croatia apparently linking us with him. Never understood that, the guy lives in Spain so I'm not sure how Croatian papers would know anything before Spanish papers.

Bump. So he's back from injury, got 2 assists against Villarreal, which brings him up to 7 goals and 8 assists.

Sky Sports just released a new article:

Ivan Rakitic Undecided on Future

Looks like the following teams are in for him:
  1. Liverpool
  2. PSG
  3. United
  4. Chelsea
Liverpool apparently sent scouts out for the Villarreal game, while PSG have recently been looking at him.

What type of midfielder is he? Is he creative, holding or like Cleverly who does eff all?

He's creative. Can dribble, an dictate the play and scores goals.

He also likes to stick a foot in but he would be partnered by a more defensive minded midfielder, ideally. Carrick would do nicely.

He's more mobile than probably any of our options and he's got a mean set piece on him.

If he's available I'd sign him no matter what. We're in dire need of fresh impulses in the middle of the field.

He's Captain of Sevilla. He's a creative midfielder but plays in a midfield two (can also play in the hole). Tackles pretty well, makes plenty of interceptions, scores goals and has great passing/vision. I rate him massively, he'd instantly be a first teamer for us alongside Carrick. He's also not cup tied as Sevilla are in the Europa League, so he'd be able to play in the CL.

He seems like exactly what we need.....sincerely hope we can get him signed.

He really is and the important thing is he's been getting better and better with each season. Last year he got 8 goals and 10 assists, he's on currently 7 goals and 8 assists. He's ideal for us, I was always a fan of his but watching him against Real Madrid confirmed to me he was exactly what we needed (he scored 2 goals in the Madrid game when they were 3-0 down and 5-2 down. He's a proper leader, someone who can control a game and stand up when needed. Really can't allow him to go to Liverpool or Chelsea.

Sounds a class act.

I guess the only thing that remains is whether he is available and for how much, if he within our budget then we should at least make a bid for him in Jan.

Players like Koke, Mata are not likely to move until the summer so Rakitic seems a good alternative for me.

Well he's got 18 months left on his contract and he's currently stalling over signing a new contract. So its on like donkey kong.

We'll somehow find a way not too sign this guy, like any other feasible midfield target for the last five seasons.

Moyes wants the very best so that rules him out.....we will continue farting about making bids for Fabregas, Iniesta and then when the window closes it will be a case of "we tried to get the best".

He's literally my hope to solve this season. If we could bring him and Matuidi in then it could easily change our season around. Proven internationals players with European experience. Only problem with Matuidi is that he'd be cup tied in the CL. But with 6 months left on Matuidis contract, it'd probably be wise to get a jump on everyone else.

feck cup tied, we need to do everything to avoid the crisis of falling out of the CL next season. We need fourth place.

Agreed, hence moving for those pair would be imo terrific business. We could then spend the Summer going after a real top class proven player to fill the winger slot and LB slot.

RedSky, i would like you to put you forward as our head scout....i will drop an email to Eddie right now.

Looking at it like that, I'm almost starting to convince myself it will happen.

It won't.

Just did but got Eddie's out of office....he's on his hols (again).

On a serious note, just read PSG and Dippers are leading the race to sign him.

Aye, I bumped the thread with that article (Skysports). He'd be a terrific replacement for Gerrard for the Dippers. While PSG might drop interest in him if they get Mata.

Ave we even been linked with him? Or is it just a case of our fans apparently being better scouts then uniteds backroom staff who don't seem to know what midfielders are
In all seriousness, it would be great if it happened, but why is it that the only midfielders we've been linked with all season are koke and gundogan? Do we not have any other targets in mind or are we putting all our eggs in one basket again?
