Italy vs England vs Germany (UEFA Coefficients Race)

Yeah, they changed it this season. It was different until last season. But I think it was also different for the 4th-6th placed leagues in UEFA's 5 year ranking. They also had two of the 3 EL teams in the qualifiers, so it was 4 out of 6 and 5 out of 7 guarenteed before.
You know you care too much about Football when you are commenting on the intricacies of the entry conditions of UEFA club cup competitions..

Yeah they seem to have had a revamp of the Europa League entry conditions, although funnily enough it doesnt seem to have affected Italy.

Last year Italy had 2 x EL Group Stage and 1 x EL 3rd Qualifying.
This year Italy has 2 x EL Group Stage (+1 from CL PO loser) and 1 x EL 3rd Qualifying.

If England have all 4 teams qualifying through group stage, it will be big advantage. There are bonus points which are awarded for group stage qualification and bonus points for R16 qualification as well and with 4 EPL teams in CL group stage compared to 2 of Italy, that is advantage. There are no bonus points for group stage or R16 qualification for Europa. The points awarded otherwise remain same. Last season was similar in terms of number of teams in group stage and R16 but Italy benefited by long run of Juventus plus deep runs of their teams in Europa.

Everybody but England starting well...

Isn't Portugal above France in the coefficients?

I've tweeted Paddy powers to see will they give odds on the PL making the top 3. Hopefully they will.

United, Arsenal and Chelsea will all make it our of their groups comfortably. City probably will too.

Probably. ;)

Not sure why I added France, guess had space on the sheet and saw some recent wins from their teams, and then added them. Will see if I could add Portugal, and maybe some others too.

Oh no worries, i don't know it either was just asking.

Yeah, not sure about that. They need to step it up a good deal to get something from Bayern and win in Greece. This alone could be enough to make them miss out the KO stages.

City, IMO, are more likely to make it out of their group than Arsenal now.
They have Bayern over two legs and a trip away to Greece. Three more games where they are likely to drop points.
fecking Giroud.

Really good playday by the German teams so far. It basically went as well as possible outside a sensation of Gladbach getting anything vs. Seville. Leverkusen, Gladbach and of course Bayern with good chances of making it out of the groups. Tomorrow very good chances of another two wins by us and Schalke. Maybe Augsburg can surprise their opponent aswell.

Yeah but Olympiakos will probably lose against both Arsenal and Bayern I feel.

I think you confused Gladbach with Wolfsburg. Gladbach will not even reach europa.

Playing the EL quali rounds really helps England for the moment (the failure to qualify does not).

France: 8.5 points
England: 6 points
Germany: 4 points
Italy: 1 point

Portugal joined us after the first group game.

So, 0.625 points per England, 1 point per Italy, and 1.43 for Germany from the matches of first round.

Italy didn't capitalize on England's mistake. Lazio losing at home and Viola getting just a draw at Dnipro.

Lazio drew away from home.

Fiorentina lost at home

hth

Anyways, England should be fine. Italian teams will feck up as usual.

I'm not sure you should count points for the qualifiers. It's after all the qualifiers and strictly speaking separate competitions.

You're welcome.

Chelsea. The saviours of English football. *Shudders*

Nice work tracking it. I'm boring enough to be interested in it but too lazy to actually do it so fair play.
So Italy have 5 teams left (one of which hasn't played) and we've 6 and they still have more points than us? This may be a big issue over the next few years. I'm surprised that it's so rarely discussed though that could be because it doesn't benefit the media in England to talk about the PLs failings.

This piece nicely explains the current situation, the writer @dalejohnsonespn is the best person to follow on Twitter for all the UEFA rules

I'll check that out. Thanks.

Though, for the coefficients points, they do count together in the same season, so no point in separating them. Their value is just 50% of CL/EL points.

So Italy have 5 teams left (one of which hasn't played) and we've 6 and they still have more points than us?

England still have more points, and more importantly, better average. Italy just had more points in this first group stage round.

Make no mistake about it I am supporting every English team this season... even to the degree of Liverpool winning the Europa league! Both you boys in Manchester need to get your acts together next matchday, dont let us Londoners have to bail you all out. United will comfortably go through though, but Im worried about City as usual.

So the failure of the likes of Spurs, Liverpool and Everton to take the EL seriously and therefore reduce our average co-efficient, will be the thing that effectively keeps them where they are in the league? Less CL places will mean the gap between the top 3 and the rest will widen further.

Why can't the PL award some of its television revenue to English clubs that actually do well in the EL? That would go a long way to creating some financial incentive for the likes of Spurs to take Europe seriously.

Two sides that think the Europa League is beneath them.

Everton did very well in their recent (and only) European campaign. Don't think it's fair to blame them for anything. Even the Spurs did kinda ok in last five years.

Going by names and strength, blame Liverpool and City the most.

Tbh i don't even think that not taking EL seriously should be a valid excuse. The spanish teams don't play their best lineup in the EL either until the later stages, same as the english teams. So its clearly not a priority for them either. Considering the amount of money english sides have they should be building better squads and doing better in these competitions.

English clubs are doing a fecked up job in Europe, some of them even deliberately. Those teams that do not want the burden of competing in the Europa league should decline the option and let another team enter if they want. Their half hearted approach is going to hurt the English teams in the long run. Yes, the champions league teams are not helping, but the Europa league teams are doing a lot of damage.
