Israeli - Palestinian Conflict

He's referring to illegal settlements, and the perpetual illegal encroachment of land that isn't theirs. It's like me rocking up in Serbia with a mandate, and bit by bit, claiming more and more land while the world turns a blind eye, eventually to the point where

"gradually move you completely out of your home over time while meanwhile killing, starving and harrassing your family members as they moved you out into a nearby bin."

occurs.

That's the whole point of the argument though. How can settlements be illegal if they do not belong to a sovereign Palestinian state, which doesn't exist? Not even the land is occupied. You could argue that both sides are making claims that the land belongs to them but that's different to declaring that the entire WB formally, legally, whatever, belongs to the PA, right? I'd understand the argument if a settlement was built on someone's private land, but in my understanding the Arabs cannot possibly claim that they own every millimeter of land in the entire West Bank.

Again, Serbia is a sovereign state, recognized by the UN like any other sovereign state on the planet. The British and French didn't rock up with a mandate in a Republic of Palestine or State of Palestine.

Bad analogy. I legally own my home so there's nothing to partition here- unless you invade and occupy me. What got partitioned though was a huge mass of land, some of which completely uninhabited. What the partition plan would also have meant is that for the first time in history the Palestinian Arabs would have had their own, independent state. Which they rejected, unfortunately for them.

Tell that to many Palestinians who still have keys to their homes that have been appropriated by a partition plan from a colonial power - like a school bully distrbuting marbles

That's fair enough, I didn't say that injustice never occurred, but to my knowledge there have been many different ways suggested as to how to compensate for the lost land/ lost property. You have to agree though that the partition plan was the best that the Palestinians could get at that point of time. And that's not even considering the gigantic part of the mandate east of the river Jordan. No shortage of land really. You could fit twenty States of Israel into that area alone.

Perhaps easier to say in hindsight.

What?? They lost their homes after their fellow Arabs rejected partition and thought another Jewish genocide would be a better option.

Clearly, they still do.

Of course they're illegal. The UN recognises it's illegality and breaking of Geneva conventions.

Why are the settlements, whether legal or illegal, a problem for a future Palestinian state though? Surely an independent Palestine would benefit from a thriving Jewish community economically, culturally, etc.

Occupation from whom? In 1988 the Jordanians gave up any claim for the WB.

I never understood that claim fully, doesn't legally occupation occur only when one state invades another sovereign state? Like the U.S invasion and subsequent occupation of Iraq, for example. Some refer to WB as 'disputed territory'. Again, not sure what that means legally (and under which law exactly) but it seems a better description?

The International Court of Justice, the Geneva Convention and the UN all consider the East Jerusalem and West Bank to be occupied by Israel. You can say what you want about the Palestinian leadership (and I am certainly no fan of theirs) but the land is considered to be a part of internationally recognised Palestinian Territories. Israel's apologists can dismiss this all they want using pedantic discourse and demean it as a 'territorial dispute', but the fact remains that pretty much the entire international community recognises it as an occupation.

The "international community" can go and feck itself. There is an automatic majority for any anti-Israeli move in the UN anyway. The "international community" also passed a resolution for a Jewish State in Palestine. When the Arabs accept that Israel will take a call from the international community regarding the status of Jerusalem, the capital of the Jewish people for some 3000 years.

US: Israel may be using excessive force
State Department spokesman warns that settlement activity and the increasing violence in the region is reducing the prospect of a practical two-state solution, ahead of planned trip by US Secretary of State Kerry to the region.

Speaking a day after Kerry announced his intent to visit the region to try to help reduce tensions, State Department Spokesman John Kirby said the secretary was not affixing blame when he said a "massive increase in settlements" over the past year had been followed by the current outbreak of violence. Kirby later said that the department had seen reports which may indicate excessive use of force by Israeli forces.

You just couldn't make this up. The Palestinian "president" incites for more violence, and Obama's US comes up with this. What are your thoughts, @Raoul? Perhaps a combination of hospital+apology would see an end to the violence?

12 October 2015 – Deeply alarmed by the escalating violence and widespread loss of civilian life in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem and in Israel, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) today called for strong and immediate political action and accountability to stem the ongoing violence and prevent its further escalation.
“We condemn killings and injuries of Palestine refugees such as the tragic case on 5 October, of Abd El Rahman, a 13-year-old ninth grade student at an UNRWA school who was shot dead by Israeli Forces in Bethlehem's Aida refugee camp,” said the agency in apress statement.
The initial UNRWA investigation indicates that the child was with a group of friends next to the UNRWA office after the school day was over and was not posing any threat.

According to UNRWA, a total of 11 Palestinians have been killed and at least 186 have been injured in Gaza. Nine people, including three children were reportedly killed during demonstrations in Gaza and a pregnant woman and a child were killed when a house collapsed in a nearby area due to the impact of an Israeli strike.

The UN agency also recorded 45 incursions by Israeli forces in refugee camps resulting in several refugees being shot dead, including one child.

UNRWA's preliminary figures indicate that 180 people have been injured in West Bank refugee camps, including 20 children, and about 50 were injured due to live-fire.

“UNRWA reiterates the call of the United Nations Secretary-General [Ban Ki-moon], on all sides to respect and protect the rights of children, in particular their inherent right to life. We call for maximum restraint to ensure the protection of civilians, in accordance with international law,” said the statement.
UNRWA stressed that the root causes of the conflict, including the Israeli occupation, need to be addressed. It reported of a “pervasive sense of hopelessness and despair'” that is spreading across the occupied Palestinian territory due to “the denial of rights and dignity.”
“While in Gaza the latest demonstrations are evidence of a generation that has lost hope in the future; not least because of the lack of economic prospects – youth unemployment is one of the highest in the world – but also because of the lack of reconstruction more than a year after the conflict.
“An entire generation of Palestinians is at risk. All political actors must act decisively to restore their hope in a dignified, secure and stable future,” the statement concluded.

Such destruction of private Palestinian property and the forcible transfer of Palestinians violate Israel’s human rights obligations and the laws of occupation. The Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits an occupying power from destroying private property or forcibly transferring the protected population unless strictly necessary for military reasons. Israel does not claim the demolitions or planned relocations are justified for military reasons.

Palestinian man dies of heart-stroke after attacked by IOF

PNN/ Ramallah/
The Ministry of Health on Thursday morning announced the death of a Palestinian man who suffered a heart-stroke right affter he was assaulted by a group of soldiers on his way home from olive-picking in Al-Janiya village west of Ramallah, on Wednesday afternoon.

The MOH in a statement said that Riyad Dar Youssef (46), was moved to the Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah and suffered a health setback when soldiers attacked, and insulted, and detained him and his wife for two hours.

Youssef, father of seven, reportedly passed out 15 minutes later, and turned out to suffer a heart-attack, which lead to his death this morning.

With Youssef’s death, the number dead since the beginning of the Third Intifada on October first was raised to 33, 22 of them in the West Bank, and 11 in the Gaza strip.

Among those, eight are children under the age of 18, and one is a mother of an unborn child.

Here is the Palestinian boy, allegedly executed if the moderate Palestinian president is to be believed, in an Israeli hospital. Looks like he is well fed. Probably better than his 13 year old victim who is in a serious condition having been stabbed.

Lying, murdering, primitive moderates.

Why is it that all the refugees in the world, including the millions fleeing Syria, are cared for by one refugee agency (UNHCR), yet the ultimate victims have their own (UNRWA) despite being mostly settled in other Arab countries for 70 years?

Is it possible that UNRWA owes it's (profitable) existence to the conflict, and thus has no interest in a solution?

UNRWA can say "occupation" as many times as it wishes to. It doesn't change a think regarding the legal status of Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem.

Israeli eyewitness: They shot him with ten bullets, he did nothing
14 hours ago Human Rights Facebook

As a second Palestinian youth was shot in Jerusalem on Wednesday night, the Israeli media immediately accused him of “attempting” to stab an Israeli settler. However, several eyewitnesses refuted the story, one of them Israeli.

Ahmad Abu-Shaaban (26) was shot-dead by Israeli occupation police forces in Jerusalem today, after settlers started screaming that he is “a terrorist,” and giving orders to “shoot him.”

Qpress media has published a recorded phone call with an Israeli witness, who was present at the scene. He says:

“It is absolute mess here.
[Ahmad] was liquidated before my eyes. They shot him with ten bullets
He did not do anything and did not wield a knife.

Everyone shouted “terrorist” and [the police] just shot him.”

Ahmad is the second youth to be shot by IOF in Jerusalem within a few hours Wednesday night, following 16-year-old Basil Sider, who was shot in similar circumstances, in Damascus gate, East Jerusalem.

That is the sad reality. They kill first and they claim he had a knife 'attempted to stab' after to cover their tracks. And you have hateful, racist, separatist Zionists who are scaremongering, and playing on people's fear.

Here's the innocent who was shot in the Damascus gate. Notice how he is innocently holding an innocent knife, minutes after it had been attacked by an Israeli.

Edit: he was not married, I don't think, but nevertheless he was shot "under similar circumstances" to innocent Basil.

A Jewish man has described the moment he was stabbed by a fellow Israeli man who mistakenly thought he was an Arab.

Uriel Razkan was in a car park near an Ikea store in Kiryat Ata when he was attacked on Tuesday morning.

Speaking to Army Radio after being treated in hospital, the grocer said: “I’m working, and suddenly I feel four knife stabs in my back.

“I heard a shout, ‘You deserve it, you deserve it, Arab bastards!’ When I turn around I see a Haredi (Orthodox) man.

“I shouted to him, ‘I’m a Jew,’ but he tried to continue. I just ran away - otherwise I would have been killed.”

Police arrested his attacker and believe he may have stabbed Mr Razkan in a misdirected revenge attack following a wave of stabbings by Palestinians in recent weeks, the Times of Israel reported.

The suspect allegedly approached an Arab man first and asked if he was Arab, which the man denied.

Mr Razkan, who is recovering from his injuries, said that both Israelis and Palestinians were committing "racist hate crimes", adding: “If I were Arab, it still wouldn’t have been okay. You shouldn’t stab anybody.”

Tuesday was the worst day of violence in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories since tensions erupted last month.

Three Israelis and three Palestinians, including two attackers, were killed and many more were injured in stabbings, shootings, rock-throwing and clashes with security forces.

The Security Cabinet authorised police to close off Arab and Palestinian areas of Jerusalem in an emergency meeting last night that introduced a raft of controversial new measures.

Hundreds of soldiers are being deployed in the city and across Israel today as tensions continue to increase.

Eight Israelis have died in a string of stabbings, shootings and the stoning of a car, while 29 Palestinians - including 12 identified by Israel as attackers - have been killed in the last two weeks.
Israel stabbing: Israeli man stabs fellow Israeli Jew after 'mistaking him for Arab'
The initial investigations into the incident in Haifa suggest a failed revenge attack

An Israeli man has been stabbed after another Israeli Jew reportedly mistook him for an Arab, in a failed "revenge attack" on a day of increasing tension and violence in the country.

The injured man, who has yet to be identified, was left with light to moderate wounds after he was stabbed in a car park in the north Israel city of Haifa.

The attack took place in the suburb of Kiryat Ata. Israeli authorities have labelled the incident an apparently misdirected hate crime. The assailant seemily sought to attack an Arab male, in response to a wave of attacks by Palestinians.

According to reports in The Times of Israel, Army Radio, the attacker, an Israeli Jew, approached an Arab man near Kiryat Ata’s Ikea furniture store and asked him if he was, in fact, Arab

The Arab man was reportedly frightened by the question and said he was not. Shortly after this, the attacker approached another passerby, and seemingly concluded he was Arab from his appearance, and proceeded to stab him in his upper torso.

The victim, it turned out, was an Israeli Jew.

The attacker is currently being held in police custody, while the victim was taken to a local hospital with a stab wound in his upper torso.

There have been fresh clashes between Palestinians and Israeli authorities in Bethlehem this afternoon, and attacks in Jerusalem and Ra’anana. In Jerusalem, two Palestinains conducted a deadly attack on a public bus, killing two Israelis, while a separate attack in the capital saw another Israeli killed.

A Palestinian youth was killed by Israeli soldiers during clashes that broke out at the northern entrance of Bethlehem city, central West Bank, this afternoon.

Mutaz Zawahreh (27) from Deheisheh refugee camp south Bethlehem, sustained serious injuries on Tuesday afternoon during the clashes, and was announced dead of his wounds shortly afterwards in the Beit Jala governmental hospital.

Head of the medics in Bethlehem, Mohammad Awad said that the youth was hit with a metal bullet that penetrated his lung near the 300 military point.

Mu’taz Zawahre worked at the Jacir Palace hotel which is annexed to the checkpoint north of the city.

An angry demonstration went out to the streets of Bethlehem following his death. Hundreds are now bidding the last farewell to Mu’taz in his home in Deheisheh refugee camp.

Thousands participated in the funeral procession of Zawahreh on Wednesday, towards the Martyrs’ Cemetery in Irtas village, annexed to Deheisha refugee camp.

Palestinians murder innocent civilians, and countless more Palestinians will die as a result of Israel defensive measures. Another round of violence will eventually fade with Palestinians living in the gutter and Israel continuing to prosper.

Some things will never change.

It's almost as if the definition of insanity was created to explain exactly this.

It's almost as if the definition of insanity was created to explain exactly this.

Happening on both sides. Lynch mobs are attacking and chasing Arabs.

Mimon Himy and his son Dan, who had just begun serving his hitch in the IDF, were sitting at an outdoor café in the main square in the Israeli coastal town of Netanya trying to have a beer when all hell broke loose. Shouts of “Terrorist! Terrorist!” and “Death to the Arabs!” suddenly filled the air and the 58-year-old self-described right-wing Zionist Orthodox Jew and his teenage son leapt up and ran toward the screaming, intending to stop what they thought was an ongoing Palestinian terror attack against Jews, Ha'aretzreported. Neither man was armed, so Dan Himy grabbed a café chair and took it with him to use as a weapon.

“We wanted “to kill the terrorist and protect the Jews,” Mimon Himy said.

But when the Himy and son got to the site of the supposed terror attack, they saw an unarmed Israeli Arab man, face bloody, arms held up in surrender, trying to escape a mob of more than 30 right-wing racist Jews, some drunk, some directionless teens.

“There was this Arab running away from the mob with his hands in the air, and no weapon. His face was battered and bloody. I realized this was no terror attack,” Mimon Himy said.

Himny tried to stop the mob from killing Jamal and ended up having to throw himself on top of Jamal to save his life.

“This was an act of pure hatred and the perpetrators were acting like animals,” Himy said.

Five members of the mob were arrested and Netanya’s mayor spoke out against the racist attack.

“My main objective…was to save Jews,” Himy said. “And actually, I realized later that was exactly what I did – I saved those Jews from themselves.”

But Himy’s wife is upset he interceded to save the innocent Arab man, and while he has become a bit of media celebrity in Israel for his heroism, a number of social media commenters have reportedly urged the right-wing Zionist Orthodox Mimon to “go back to Gaza.”

Palestinian proposal to UNESCO: Western Wall is part of al-Aqsa
Proposal likely to pass due to automatic Arab-Muslim majority there; proposal also condemns Israel for calling on its citizens to bear arms.

The proposal states among other things that the Western Wall is part of al-Aqsa Mosque, and condemns the Israeli government for its call on citizens to bear arms because of the recent wave of terror attacks – presumably referring to statements by the mayors of Jerusalem and the police chief in Ashdod. The proposal was presented to the Executive Council of UNESCO, which has 58 member countries.

Since the Palestinians are not members of the committee, the six Arab states submitted the proposal on behalf of the Palestinians: Algeria, Egypt, Kuwait, Morocco, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates. However, senior Israeli sources say that the Palestinians are simultaneously acting to move the proposal to the UNESCO plenum, in which they are recognized as a state.

This is the type of proposals/resolutions I was referring to. The "international community" is a farce, and the UN is the global equivalent of the Queen of England. It consumes tons of tax payers' money, and is good for nothing more than annual ceremonies.

David Amos after the attack Yesh Din

A 66-year-old British man volunteering in the West Bank received emergency treatment after being attacked by a gang of gun-wielding Israeli settlers hurling rocks at him.

David Amos, a retired publishing company worker, was struck in the head by a rock as he tried to protect Palestinian farmers during the olive harvest.

He was evacuated from the area by ambulance and taken to a hospital in Nablus, where he received five stitches.

He told The Independent the group of settlers came down a hill from the direction of the Yizhar settlement towards Palestinian farmland near the village of Burin where he and two other British women. ''There were eight or nine of the settlers, all masked and they were carrying large rocks.''

Mr Amos said that the settlers fired gunshots as they approached, causing him to sit on the ground and yell to his colleagues to take cover. ''They were shouting at us 'go' in English and also shouting in Hebrew. A man stood no more than four feet from me and threw this rock which hit me on the back of the head. I was sitting upright and I fell over on my side and then he and two others kicked me. The women were shouting 'we are British' so they knew we were British before the rock was thrown.''

Mr Amos said the settlers also set fire to undergrowth. ''There was already a fire burning by the time they threw the stone at me. They set fire to more trees and undergrowth as we made our way away from the olive grove. They pursued us but they didn't come and attack us again.'' A Palestinian farmer was also wounded by stone throwing in the same incident, Mr Amos said.

Mr Amos said he would file a complaint with Israeli police even though such complaints very rarely lead to indictments. Mr Amos, a Quaker, came to the West Bank with the British group, the Olive Harvest Trust, which he says is an organisation committed to nonviolence and to protecting Palestinian olive farmers.

Palestinian eye-witnesses claimed that the group of farmers was attacked and had stones thrown at them.

Eight Israelis have died in a string of stabbings, shootings and the stoning of a car, while 29 Palestinians have been killed in the last two weeks.
According to a police statement, the Israelis claimed that the altercation began after stones were thrown at a car belonging to an Israeli woman.

Ziv Stahl, Research Department Director, Yesh Din said: "We are in the midst of the olive harvest season, and Burin is a known friction area, where Yesh Din has documented numerous violent incidents against Palestinian farmers. During this period of high tension, we would expect that the Israeli security forces would be present on the ground in order to prevent any escalation of violence and to protect the local population, as they are obliged by law.

According to Israeli police, four Israeli citizens were arrested for disturbing the peace after an altercation between them and Palestinian farmers who were harvesting olives in Burin.

Israeli soldier killed in knife and gun attack on bus station
Eritrean asylum seeker was attacked after a crowd mistook him for the accomplice of an assailant who opened fire in Beersheba

One Israeli has been killed and 10 injured after an assailant armed with a gun and a knife opened fire in a bus station.

The attacker was shot and killed in the incident on Sunday evening as was an innocent Eritrean asylum seeker who was also shot and beaten by Israeli bystanders.

3500.jpg

What’s driving the young lone wolves who are stalking the streets of Israel?

The attack in the southern city of Beersheba was the most serious in several weeks of escalating violence and came despite efforts by Israel to further tighten security around the country, which has done little to diminish the frequency of violence.

The latest incident came as US secretary of state John Kerry was due to meet the Israeli and Palestinian leaders in the coming days as part of efforts to lower the temperature.

Reports in the Israeli media, however, suggested that Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu – due to meet Kerry in Germany – would have no concessions to offer Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

In Sunday night’s attack, police said the Arab assailant – it was not clear if he was a Palestinian or an Israeli Arab citizen of Palestinian origin - entered the central bus station in Beersheba and began shooting and stabbing people.

They said an Israeli soldier was killed, five police were lightly wounded and five civilians were wounded to varying degrees.

Yoram Halevy, a police commander in southern Israel, told reporters that in addition to the knife and gun he entered with, the attacker also snatched a weapon from the soldier he killed

The attacker was shot and killed.

Following the initial gunfire, a security guard shot an asylum seeker. Video footage showed him being attacked and kicked by an angry mob who wrongly believed he was an accomplice. In the footage people are seen kicking him, throwing a bench at him and pinning him to the ground with a chair. He later died of his injuries.

The attack was one of the most serious incidents amid near-daily bouts of violence that has hit Israel and the Palestinian territories over the past month. After the attack, a crowd of Israelis gathered outside the bus station and chanted “death to Arabs”.

Palestinians and Israelis must speak with one voice: this is no way for us to live
Izzeldin Abuelaish

The unrest erupted in Jerusalem a month ago over tensions surrounding a holy site sacred to Jews and Muslims. It soon spread to the Arab neighbourhoods of east Jerusalem and then to the West Bank, Gaza and Israel.

Israel has struggled to contain near-daily attacks by Palestinian assailants.

Authorities have blocked roads and placed checkpoints at the entrances of Palestinian neighbourhoods in east Jerusalem. Other security measures include ID checks and requiring some Palestinian residents to lift their shirts and roll up trouser legs as they exit their neighbourhood to prove they are not carrying knives. Soldiers have been deployed in Jerusalem and cities across Israel.

On Sunday, Israeli police erected a barrier to separate the Jewish neighbourhood of Armon Hanatziv from the adjacent Palestinian neighbourhood of Jabal Mukaber as part of the heightened security. A number of attackers have come from Jabal Mukaber.

With Uzz and HR taking a break I guess I'll fill the thread with some news. Tensions are really mounting over there now, always are, but seems like it's on a knife-edge.

Turns out the Eritrean guy died of his wounds. The randomness of these attacks is insane, wrong time and wrong place and that's it. As to what's driving young Arab men and women to randomly attack and kill innocent people at bus stops I suggest pathological hatred. Nothing else.

Very impartial.

Palestinians are also being killed randomly and disproportionately by settlers and state. If as you suggest it pathological hatred, then it's on both sides, born out of many decades mistreatment and land grab. I don't condone violence under any circumstances, but such conditions would leave many with pathological issues including Israelis.

Unless a solution is found which suits both sides this is not likely to go away.

Why are the settlements, whether legal or illegal, a problem for a future Palestinian state though? Surely an independent Palestine would benefit from a thriving Jewish community economically, culturally, etc.

HAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAH

220 pages, a zillion posts, good/bad/biased/bigoted, but this post takes the cake.

Why are settlements, whether legal or illegal (I like that...) a problem for a future Palestinian State. lololol

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have mostly stayed out of this thread this time around, because, I've come to realize, there will never ever be a viable Palestinian State, so Palestinians should simply give up. The world at large does not care or if it does care, it has decided the Israeli POV is more righteous.

That is the reality. There is no massive Jewish conspiracy - people just think Israel is right.

If you have 300 days of quiet in the ME - Israeli settlements continue to be built and no one talks about Palestinian Statehood. If you have Palestinian violence (stabbing to death random people is a great way to win sympathy lads), they are threatened with even more settlement expansion and of course everyone says - 'how can there be a Palestinian State, look at how evil they are'.

So Game Over.

That's it. No analysis needed, no explanations required - there simply will never be a Palestinian State. Anyone, I mean it, anyone who tells you different is a liar.

Your debating skills need some work.

EDIT: I probably agree with your conclusion though, that a Palestinian state looks as unlikely today as ever. But all this laughing to ridicule an argument is a bit childish. Sarcasm is the adult way to do it.
