The United Nations Special Committee has released a report asserting that Israel’s actions in Gaza align with the characteristics of genocide, citing extensive civilian casualties and the use of starvation as a weapon.
The report accuses Israel of deliberately causing death and suffering through its blockade, obstruction of humanitarian aid, and targeted attacks on civilians and aid workers, despite international appeals and rulings.
The committee also criticised Israel’s use of AI-assisted targeting with minimal human oversight, combined with the deployment of heavy explosives, for failing to adequately differentiate between civilians and combatants, resulting in significant civilian deaths.
Additionally, the report highlights public statements from Israeli officials endorsing the destruction of essential water, sanitation, and food systems in Gaza and restricting access to fuel.
Israel, which earlier dismissed similar accusations by South Africa as “grossly distorted,” defends its actions as self-defense, asserting its operations are aimed at Hamas, not Palestinian civilians. Meanwhile, Palestinians fleeing northern Gaza report severe food shortages and deaths from hunger, while aid organizations warn of an impending famine.
The US, despite its deadline for improved humanitarian access, concluded that Israel is not obstructing aid to Gaza and will continue its military assistance, though this contrasts with reports of aid not reaching those in need on the ground.
