ISIS in Iraq and Syria

Air strikes have a limited effect on fighters who are perpetually weaving in and out of civilian populations. You can hit buildings, vehicles, and other structures - but getting at individual fighters is nearly impossible because of the risk to civilians. Air strikes should only be used to physically and psychologically soften up the targets prior to a ground campaign to finish the job.
The Kobane front was evacuated two weeks ago, there are virtually no civilians left. What there actually is are tanks, artillery pieces and heavy weapons that have been bombarding the town and the civilians inside.

Oh and YPG have destroyed 15 tanks in the past two weeks on the Kobane front. How many have the air strikes destroyed?

If there are actual targets to be destroyed, it goes without saying that the airstrikes would've taken them out. There must be some other sensitivities that are in play that are preventing a more aggressive approach from the air campaign.

Erdogan is obviously not reliable here. He probably cut a deal with ISIS to get his hostages released last week.

Yeah it was 200 ISIS prisoners in exchange for the hostages, some ISIS dude confirmed it.

The source of this article is ISIS and a guy who has been taking his news from ISIS. Not reliable.

It will be very hard for ISIS to enter Baghdad, and this is just propaganda to lift the spirits of their supporters/fighters after failing to deliver on their promise to "enter Baghdad in a couple of days", a promise they made last June.
Doesn't the article say that some vicar started the rumour?

Yes, but nobody reported that other than ISIS themselves on their propaganda accounts, and that's where he got that rumour from.

There is some tough fighting going in the West of Baghdad though, but I very much doubt they can advance into Baghdad. The reason ISIS is strong in those areas (Falluja, Jurf Al-Sakhar, ...) is because they controlled it long before the attack on Mosul, so their positions there are very fortified and hard to break, especially with the government reluctant to bomb heavily because of fear for civilians, so they have to rely pretty much totally on ground forces, which is not easy when the opposition is well-trained, fortified and well-equipped. When they (ISIS) go on the attack though the story is totally different.

Which ISIS members said they're so close to baghdad?

They are too many.. You know bs like..

which they post all the time to give the impression that they're very close to invading Baghdad or are operating actively on its borders.

Nice one, have you seen the vid of the dead family on the twitter account of the first one you linked? The video is titled 'coallition massacre of families' or something. its horrendous.

YPG commander in Kobane: "ISIS outside Kobane had upper hand due to heavy weapons. Inside town, its man to man. We wait for them."

Note that once ISIS enter the town, air strikes will be virtually useless. Now is the best time to hit them and the only time it will have a huge impact.

BREAKING: Turkish parliament authorizes military operations in Syria and Iraq and allows foreign troops to be deployed on Turkish soil.

And yesterday: Ocalan states that the fate of the peace process with Turkey lies on the fate of Kobane. Pressures Turkey to fight against ISIS before the town falls.

Let's watch the buffer zone unravel and the PKK restart the war, so predictable.

The next few days will either be one of the darkest in recent Kurdish history or one of the greatest. The people of Kobane have prepared themselves for a huge attack in the town, street by street and house by house.

Meanwhile the coalition of 40+ countries twiddle their thumbs and do very little to help. Turkey also popping up with this news just as ISIS reach the gates of Kobane makes for an interesting few days.

What could other countries do in the absence of boots on the ground ?

So turkey will allow ISIS to capture kobane, thats if they do, and then turkey will enter?

LOOL Why am I hearing that ISIS fighters plan on getting ebola and then going to america? Where did that one start from?

So turkey will allow ISIS to capture kobane, thats if they do, and then turkey will enter?
but if that happens then its PKK vs turkey too?
Yeah
What could other countries do in the absence of boots on the ground ?
  • Arm the YPG instead of rebels that will turn to ISIS in a few months.
  • Prevent Turkey from supplying ISIS with fighters and ammo.
  • Actually use the numerous F-16s and the likes that have been offered, hit the heavy weapons.

Yeah

And stop arming the other terrorist groups on Syria, which indirectly means arming ISIS.

Bomb them properly. This air campaign is a joke.

Turkey has played a very dubious role to say at least. Turkey flooded Syria with ISIS and other foreign terrorists and now they want to take a vote on military action against them
A German news program shows that Turkey is sending terrorists into Syria.

What do you mean bomb them properly ? They've been bombing wherever possible.

Yeah

  • Arm the YPG instead of rebels that will turn to ISIS in a few months.

  • Actually use the numerous F-16s and the likes that have been offered, hit the heavy weapons.

F16s are already in the area. They are obviously not going to bomb areas where the can't identify the combatants.

Yeah, right. They are entering Kobane. It is very strange why no bombing is being done here when what is a clear front line of ISIS could be carpet bombed.
US had enough time to do that.

That's not even an issue with people who might be terrorists, do you honestly think it's an issue when we know for a fact the recently crowned worst in the world are known by the entire world to be storming a city?

What are you suggesting ? That they're deliberately allowing ISIS to advance on Kobane ? That sounds ridiculous.

I don't think its an issue if its clear there are only combatants in the area, but it would be if there were a lot of civilians in close proximity. One off bombings where civilians are near may happen, but i seriously doubt they would do it consistently.

Hasn't Kobane been evacuated?

Hasn't Kobane been evacuated?

Dunno. All is know is that if the coast was clear to do so, the US or other coalition jets would level every ISIS target available. If they don't, its more than likely because of sensitivities of civilian casualties.

Nothing Raoul. Strange things are happening there. Civilians aren't there on the frontline. Kobane is a ghost town at the moment.
US is capable to hit them hard. They did a great job here in Bosnia.

Having a target to aim for would be a good start. Individual ISIS fighters running around like a disturbed ant colony doesn't make for good targets for jets to aim at.

Plenty of targets to bomb before Kobane and nothing happens. That is really two-faced.
