ISIS in Iraq and Syria

Their artillery can reach 30km, they're not moving any closer, in fact they're getting pushed back. Meh let them hit it all they want, they're getting desperate.

30 odd Turkish tanks on the border near Kobane, I guess they're going to swoop in to "save" the city if ISIS get to close. Anything like this will be considered occupation and thus be breaking the peace process. It's a shame they've already broken it lol.

Jordan Matson is the first American to join the YPG.

ISIS closing in on Kobane and Baghdad, all those fighter jets that the numerous countries have sent could be used to hit the obvious heavy weaponry on the front lines. It can't be hard to find a bunch of tanks to hit, not any harder than finding some ISIS HQ or the like that has been hit so far.

They're not going to hit the obvious targets, Cameron has already reiterated that this conflict must take at least several years. Where's the sport in ending the fun now?

BREAKING SKY NEWS: RAF Tornados have carried out their first airstrikes on Islamic State militant targets in Iraq.

Great banter if they hit another abandoned building.

Erdogan is apparently setting up a plan to send ground troops to fight ISIS.

What he probably means is that if Kobane falls, Turkey will move in and retake the town. They'll then evacuate all civilians for "safety" and make it a buffer zone.
Said buffer zone is allegedly being debated by Turkish politicians right now.

They don't call me the Kurdish Nostradamus for no reason. 6/1 odds on PKK starting the war against Turkey again when they move into Kobane, taking bets now.

What a bloody mess it will be. Anyways keep doing the good work Suli. Really like reading your updates

Meanwhile, the Iraqi army has cleared 13 villages in Diyala province. This comes a day after they killed 80 terrorists in Al-Anbar.

And when I say Iraqi army, I of course mean the militias, lol.

There's a reason why ISIL are vehemently focusing on Kobane, they know it might force their mate Erdrogan to jump in and make things interesting.

Meanwhile no sign of nearby airstrikes. I'm guessing those tornadoes are enjoying their aerial sightseeing tour and yet another shooting blanks 'intelligence' mission.

Erdogan will have achieved his goals:

1) Back ISIS against the YPG.
2) Limit the strength and power of the YPG by blocking trade/supplying ISIS with weapons.
3) Allow ISIS to take over a Kurdish town, thus removing one of the three cantons under Kurdish control.
4) Swoop in, create a buffer zone and attack ISIS.
5) Look like the saviour, to the international world, and essentially occupy Kobane whilst fighting ISIS.
6) Continue to get support from NATO after weakening the Kurds. Act as boots on the ground and the hero that Syria needs.

Mission accomplished.

Regarding RAF jet strikes:
"Following this engagement, the patrol identified an Isil armed pick-up truck in the same area and conducted an attack on the vehicle using a Brimstone missile."

How much does it cost to fire a Brimstone missile? Have the RAF really been scanning the area for weeks, only to hit a fecking Toyota?! 1/2 of the missiles on a car. :wenger:

I know I said hit them where they fight but surely they could find more than just one Toyota to hit, maybe an actually armoured vehicle, not an armed one.

im surprised the kurds are still fighting in kobane

Its either desperately fight on or succumb to an almost certain massacre. Fair play to them, they're putting up a resilient fight.

Amazing how the Gulf Arabs and Turks were very quick to arm Syrian terrorists but Kurds are having to go through hunger strikers around the world to encourage governments to give them the heavy weapons they desperately need. Also, if only there were planes that could bomb the ISIS hordes besieging Kobane...

They've got more reinforcements now. The next few days will decide the battle, YPG won't win without a significant increase in air strikes.

Also, some channel were showing on live TV ISIS members entering Syria whilst Turks look on. I'll find the video later on. Still confused as to how the rest of the world turn a blind eye to it.

Feck sake, this is all rather depressing to follow, knowing a few hundred thousand are going to have to flee or be killed.

About time then. I fear the Turks will try and shift the balance back though.
3 hours ago ISIS fighters stepped off a train under Turkish army supervision and crossed into Western Kobane.

There was a link for a live stream of the channel recording the movement, not sure what it shows now but here it is: http://www.imctv.com.tr/canli-yayin/

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest. NATO member Turkey happily facilitating ISIS with safe passage for their murderous adventures.

Here's some guy reporting it, I can't translate as I'm on my phone. That railway is on the Turkish side of the border, they just got dropped off:

Then when the PKK restart the war because the Turks broke the peace treaty, they'll accuse them of being terrorists. :boring:

Theres some recent talk of them closing the border but it wont happen any time soon imo, what do you reckon

Turkey will close the border/stop supporting ISIS if Kobane falls. I reckon they're going to act as boots on the ground in Syria, creating that buffer zone I spoke of and clearing any territory ISIS hold near Turkey.

These air strikes aren't halting the advance, they aren't in a large enough quantity to do any real damage/stop ISIS movements towards Kobane.

It's flat land so things like tanks play a huge factor in the battle, no fighting force in the world could stop ISIS with the resources YPG have at their disposal.

Air strikes have a limited effect on fighters who are perpetually weaving in and out of civilian populations. You can hit buildings, vehicles, and other structures - but getting at individual fighters is nearly impossible because of the risk to civilians. Air strikes should only be used to physically and psychologically soften up the targets prior to a ground campaign to finish the job.
