Is Jurgen Klopp the German Brendan Rodgers?

Think there was a thread some time ago about whether or not Klopp's reputation will take a hit given Dortmund's bad start.

Think it's way too early to discount his achievements, and there's a long way to go. So, don't think anyone would think Klopp has feet of clay.

The first 2 replies in this thread were top drawer. Bravo @Ole's_toe_poke and @KiD MoYeS

Seriously though, Klopp's actually won things and gets his star players ripped away from him each year.

If your team can only play one way then I'd say you're not quite as good as people think you are.

He doesn't strike me as particularly adaptable. Either his style (which requires the exact right players and opposition) works or they struggle as they are now.

When it does work Dortmund are formidable but it also requires the other team to be on the front foot a lot too so when smaller teams sit back they struggle.

That said. I like him a lot both as a coach and a person. He has character which in football is a massive rarity. I wish he had more luck with injuries and less poaching of his players.

That's probably true but I think he should get more time to prove it. Dortmund do seem to have struggled against sides that sit back against them but it's too early to say he can't adapt to that.

Team used to be quite good when they had a decent striker, blathers on about "philosophy","the group" etc (probably), the press / fans who talk about diamond formations and false 9s tossed themselves off over him but are now strangely quiet...

What say ye, Caf?

No.

You know he has actually won things.

Pretty sure Klopp would rather quit football than pick a weakened team in a big European game. They couldn't be much different when you think about it. Style of play, success, personality, the fact that Klopp doesn't sound like a middle-management textbook. The only minor similarity is both are going through a tough patch now, but every manager has those.

Does Klopp actually go on about "philosophy" that much?

I'm not sure if he uses the word "philosophy" so often, but he's definitely an idealist. I'm too lazy to google the exact quotes, but he's said something like this in interviews:

"The successful Barcelona team of recent years is a great team, but if I had grown up watching them, I'd be a tennis fan instead."
"Sometimes I when I watch a game of football I can't help but think it's so boring, even when the big teams play. Yeah, you won the game, but what's the point of winning if you play like that?"

Hehe - nothing wrong with that, I reckon.

No - I was thinking more particularly about whether he uses a lot of...hollow sounding bollocks. And he doesn't strike me as one who does that - and those quotes certainly back up that idea. Pretty snappy and - at least seemingly - honest enough.

I can't help but like the man myself - even if he is (or perhaps was?) adored by many in the "hipster" category.

Oh yeah, he's pretty damn passionate and honest. He's like a crazier and more idealistic version of Sir Alex when he was young. What's not to love?

No worries! Dortmund hasn't been "hipster" for 3 years! I reckon it's all about Southampton now:p

Surely this is a pisstake?

It's obvious that Rodgers is in a different league. Takes some skill to finish second with Liverpool.

inb4 someone takes this seriously

Klopp

TwoSheds surprisingly quiet now. Is this the worst call in cafe history? When you think about it, Klopp and Rodgers are very much the same: white people, manage football teams for money. Oh wait, the comparison ends there.

Terrible thread, Klopp actually won things and got his team to a CL final. What the feck has Rodgers achieved ?
:nono: I think you're forgetting about the small matter of the Championship Playoff Final!

I assume the OPs intention was just to rile some of the football hipsters. It certainly worked gangbusters.

I'm feeling so riled right now. I'm like the English Nelson Mandela.

You can't compare their achievements, and in my opinion not even their personalities, klopp is actually an intelligent manager and i like to watch his interview and i have time for whatever he has to say, rodgers is just a twat.

Not at all! Both managers finished second last year, they both saw a world class striker leave, and now Dortmund are 15th, only one place off safety, while Liverpool is 11th and only four points off a Champions League spot. I guess that says it all: Klopp < Rodgers.

@Bazi

Who would be actual German Rodgers? Armin Veh? Thomas Tuchel?

The German Rodgers is definitely Christoph Daum.

Veh is not nearly delusional enough and actually a nice fella, while Tuchel has a nasty temper and arrogance, but he's so far delivered and is regarded as one of the best coaches in the league.

Balu had a good suggestion with Fink. I guess you could add Labbadia as well.

One (fecking hilarious) slip otherwise Rodgers would have the first.
Liverpool with Suarez in the form they were in last year would be up there in CL reckoning
Also this, last season sadly, they were fantastic to watch.
Got him on the last two (though I'm sure what his players say about him)

Yeah, god forbid someone should compare a guy who hasn't won the champions league with a guy who...hasn't won the champions league!

Just like me and Nelson Mandela. Two peas in a pod we are.

Definitely a WUM. Well done TwoSheds, everyone took the bait.

If thats all the difference then all managers who haven't won it are the same.

Obviously context means nothing.

Thorsten Fink

Fink really was great with all teams he had - apart from Hamburg. And the coach who can deal with that bunch and that club and be successful with them still has to be found...

My favourite Bundesliga coach right now - apart from Guardiola - is Gisdol. I think he does a great job. His upbringing (with Rangnick and Badstuber) is about the same like Tuchel's. The worked together (one with the U17, the other with the U19) at Stuttgart about 2005

I was kidding mate, this is one of the worst threads I've seen since joining this forum... I think Rodgers is a good manager but comparing him to Klopp is unfair to both of them.
