Is Cristiano Ronaldo a United Legend?

Is this even a serious question?

Instrumental in the season we last won the champions league, we have only won the competition in its different formats three time.

Won the Ballon D'or here, how many have done that?

Grew from a massively talented fledgling into arguably the best player in the world while at the club.

Yet he wants to leave and now he is a bell end, or s short term legend, or a traitor if he goes to so and so, left twice.....what absoltue sour grapes nonsense.

Who can blame him for wanting to leave to go to his dream club first time round, certainly who can blame him for leaving the shambles we are at the moment?

Short term legend like Ronaldhino? Please, of course Ronaldhino is a legend at Barcelona....and for those saying that........how long was Eric Cantona here, is he not a United legend.

Traitor blah blah....Dennis Law, Schmeichel and ANdy Cole all played for City.....all are etched in our illustrious history.

And the shrot sellign exercise, yes maybe football has changed.....but Drogba and Henry went back for a season to there respective clubs and neither at a younger age had the effect Ronaldo did on an utterly shambolic side. We only qualified for the CL knockout stages this summer due to ROnaldo, only he and DeGea can hold there heads up of anything other than shambolic this season from the established pros..

People being sour now should hang there heads in shame......and people wonder why he wants to leave....it isnt just the shambolic club, some of the fans of this club are no better

No player is bigger than the club, but we should celebrate what Ronaldo has done here...in both spells

He left us at his peak years to play for another club, that's not something to hold against him but it obviously has a significance to us. He's now leaving again because we aren't in the CL, if that's not jumping ship then I don't know what is.

There's no specific definition for what constitutes a legend anyway. For me it has to be someone who loves the club and gives his all, and proves his loyalty when we need him the most. Ronaldo has always been a narcissistic person who only cares about himself, dude can't even get himself excited if he isn't the one scoring, but in that regard he has managed to be without a doubt a legend in football, but as far as the club is concerned he's a twat who left us twice, and it seems he has no issue playing for Barca either, ask Madrid fans then if they'll still consider him a legend then.

Let me put it this way.
I would and have on many occasions travelled from Bristol to Manchester to watch Ronaldo play for United.

I would never have dreamt of travelling to Manchester to watch Ole play.
So put as many stupid green faces as you think is clever.
I prefer to write about my opinion.

You can travel from Bristol or China to watch Ronaldo play for United, doesn't change the fact that calling Ole as mediocre player at best deserves stupid green faces.

Didn't know player quality and legend status depended on "Buster15" travelling from Bristol to watch them play.

Undoubtedly a legend on the field but also one who has an insatiable hunger for personal success, which is what makes him a true sporting icon.

Loyalty does have its compromises as Ronaldo soon found out after moving to United. Can’t blame him for wanting to move especially at 37.

Good bye.

Cristiano is clearly a United legend. Why is this even a question?

Many people who post on this board are very young and did not follow MUFC in the 2000s, so are unaware of what CR7 means to MUFC.

Forlan is a United legend? What’s next, Kieran Richardson? Shinji Kagawa?
Come on now.

Ok Forlan's a cult hero. Has Ronaldo ever scored two goals against Liverpool at Anfield?

I'm 38 and have supported United since I was 10. He was a brilliant player for us. Genuinely the best player in the world in a couple of seasons with us. But him leaving for Real in his prime is a big reason I'm on the fence about his status at United. And now him wanting to leave just made it easier for me to lean towards him not being a legend.

Whilst I can agree he is probably “technically” the best player to ever play for us, but he’s not in my top ten favourite players. He just leaves me cold and always has done.

I suppose it depends on how you define legend. He isn’t one for me. Some good examples would be Henrik Larsson who would be a legend for Sweden and Celtic, wore out shirt, but wasn’t one for us. Or Cavani, probably a legend for Napoli and Uruguay but just a good player who played for us at one point.

 @ a legend for us.

Far from it. Trying his best to bail and cause disarray our season before it's even started while we've been at a very low point after a terrible season. Wasn't too fussed about him leaving the first time as he young lad from Portugal, and respected the culture difference and understood it.

But he literally tried to feck a bomb into our season before a ball been kicked. Total undermining the new manager with unwanted drama.

Any one thinking he a club legend needs their heads looked at.

CR7 is probably the greatest of all-time to wear our sacred shirt.
That is most probably true, but he had his prime years, most goals, most trophies etc. at Madrid.
Messi isn't a PSG legend neither..

I kinda saw him as a United legend before, even considering he left at 23yo, but tend to think that his 2nd stint and his behaviour now takes something away from it.

It depends on the definition I guess. For me, determination, off-pitch behaviour and fire for the club make a legend too, not only the performance and peak-level.

Nope. Don’t go believing any of this nonsense about one last crack at major trophies as well. He wants to join a club where he can comfortably hit 25 goals and 5-7 CL goal to pad his record even further. When people claim he’s laser focused that means he really is, he never wants to give those records up. At United he will have one next season but not the other. In his head I guarantee he thinks he can get another 20 CL goals before he retires. He’s 15 ahead of Messi and if Messi picks it up next season that could be halved to a gettable figure if Ronaldo stays.
Ronaldo doesn’t care where he’s a legend, he just cares about the greatest of all time argument.

I think I remember, maybe erroneously, a final game of the season at Madrid where he had scored his 60th goal of the season but they still lost the title that final day. And someone, maybe Ramos, had to go over to him when he was still on the pitch after full time and tell him to stop celebrating his individual tally given that they’d just lost the league.

I may have misremembered the precise details but if that is the gist of it then yeah, he’s in that very tiny minority of footballers who are genuinely happy with personal numbers even during a team failure.

Why? It was no secret he dreamt from a child of playing for Madrid and as I said he will be 38 next year, the club is in a shambles, the football has been dreadful, it isnt the same club he left before.....he has maybe a season or two at the most at the top, why on earth would he want to spend that period here, the state that we are in currently?

No player is bigger than the club, but we have watched a boy become a man and the best player in the world during his time here. For selfish reasons or not, the sacrifice and dedication he put into that here is to be applauded. And in his second stint, as an absolute veteran age where very few players are still palying, he has still managed to be the best player here, outfield wise by a considerable margin.

Long term is it a big loss....no, its probably one season, from his point of view I fully understand why he wants to move on. Of course it wouldnt leave me happy at all if it was to another club in our leaque.

I fully understand with your definition of a legend including loyalty, but as also mentioned there are countless other players who could be considered legends from there history here that have also spent the twilight of there careers at rival clubs so calling him a twat becuase he has left us to fulfill his dream and because we are in a shambles now when he has always given his all and been one of the best players the club has ever seen sounds bitter, disrespectful and childish to me but its all opinions.

For me I want players that give there all and have the right quality to wear the shirt while they are here. SO personally and I am sure many would disagree I would much rather an Ince, Teves or Heinze than a McTominay or the like....obviously quality, loyalty and dedication is the ideal scenario.

Not every foreign player will fall in love with the club, but I dont think Ronaldo falls into that category anyway, he has always shown respect to the club, evern during his firts time leaving. If that changes with this move and yes the not turnign up to training (supposedl family reasons) is unprofessional and disrespectful so he may not do himself any favours, but at this poitn in time, again I dont think there is anything so far to deserve anything but respect from his time here as a player

The speed and volume of shirt sales tells a huge story around his popularity. The way he’s looked after himself and remained at the highest level is testament to his dedication to the game, his legacy.

I am thankful to have watched in in red. He just doesn’t seem to think of United like a legend, a true great. That for me makes him not the best. Sadly he may be descending into a mercenary of his own legacy.

We're a 140 odd year old footballing institution, there's a large number of players that are considered 'legends' for a all sorts of reasons and Cristiano is certainly one of them

If you were going to rank them all he wouldn't be near the top though where I'm sure he sits for Real.

Exceptional on the pitch in his pomp but
Not enough around that to push him into the upper echelons

That legacy is being eroded every day he pulls this shit. You can't be a legend whilst at the same time derailing your club's season and creating all this drama. The timing really sucks and could have been handled better. If he goes awol, he can't really be considered a legend anymore.

A legendary player who played for United but not a United legend.
Spot on.
A player have to be a legendary player and United in heart to be a United legend. For Ronaldo everything is about himself; his success, his records, his brand and his money.

It doesn't need to be either a Tevez or a McTominay, a lot of top players have stuck by their clubs during difficult times through the years. Some players even spent their entire careers without winning anything out of loyalty. When Juventus got relegated Buffon, Nedved, Del Piero and Trezeguet decided to remain with the club, we're talking about relegation here, and others like Ibrahimovic and others just left.

Now I don't blame Ronaldo the footballer for looking after his records, though I think he's an idiot for only caring about that, and in my mind the real legacy in football isn't about records. No liverpool fan gives a shit a bout Gerrard not winning a league title, he'll always be a legend for them and nothing will change that. But when I think of United legends I just don't think what he's doing now reflects that in any shape or form. He's a football legend, but he doesn't give a shit about United, and if you don't give a shit about united then you aren't a united legend.

 Anyone saying he isn’t a United legend. We’ve won three European Cups in our history and he was the main reason we won one of them. He also played a huge part in us winning three league titles on the bounce and is one of only four United players to win a balon dor. He’s right up there with Best and Edwards as the best players to ever play for us and he’s a true winner.

In few years nobody is going to remember in detail what is happening now. And he will be considered an United legend for sure.

There are 27 United players with 4 or more titles so I don't know how winning the PL 3 times make you automatically a club legend..

If he retired at 23 for whatever reason, he undoubtedly would go down as a United legend.
But he left the club to become a Madrid legend and he's about to do it a second time for individual records and prestige.

In the end, I'm undecided as of now. It depends on your definition of a club legend and how many of those exist. He's surely not in the tier 1 with the class of '92 or Best / Rooney.

Me too. Defo not a player to have his statue outside of a stadium if you asked me.

What a shame there are so many here who are unaware of Ronaldo's impact for United in the mid-2000s, leading up to the CL triumph in 07/08. What a magical season it was, which Ronaldo was a massive part. Ronaldo was in no way singularly responsible for United's success during tenure, but he was a colossus in a squad of giants like Scholes and Vidic. Hopefully posters who are unaware of how fukking outrageous Ronaldo was at that time should go on YouTube and see for themselves what he meant to United's trophy haul during his first spell with us.

Other United legends left the club for one reason or another. Law, Best, Keane and Beckham come to mind, yet we do not besmirch their reputation by denying their legend status.

Will never be a top 5 in our club history…
A true legend would never spite on his club’s & go to other club calling it his dream

a true legend would never use his club for publicity bs

Cantona
Best
Giggs
Beckham
Rooney

All of them are way better & treated our club with respect
