If Ronaldo had turned to shit at Madrid, he'd be a United legend. As he played well for a decade after leaving United, he's not. Fantastic logic that.

Just because he's a Madrid legend doesn't mean he can't be a United legend too. He's going to go down as one of the top 5 footballers in the history of the game, played 6 years at the club, 300 games, plenty of great moments, big goals, won everything both collectively and individually and he was the main man in the last truly great United team you will see for a while. What more do you want? For him to go to bed wearing United pyjamas to prove his love for the club?

If Gary Neville or Evra were offered what Ronaldo was getting at Madrid, does anyone actually believe they'd stay out of loyalty? Come on...

Henry is an Arsenal legend even if he left for Barcelona, Mourinho is an Inter legend even if he left for Madrid, Kaka is a Milan legend even if he left for Madrid, etc...

Not for me.

I find this Ronaldo obsession from some of our fans fecking cringe worthy. It's like eulogising about your ex who left you for a more masculine, better looking, more successful, richer guy. The man couldn't wait to get the feck out of here. feck him and his tanned abs. Great player and loved him while he was here but he's nowhere near Cantona for instance who's United through and through or even Patrice Evra or Ferdinand. Amazing players, integral to one of our best periods as a club, and they gave their best years to us too, unlike Ronaldo. Not a legend imo.
 Agree with this.

Evra is a bigger united legend though.....jesus h christ. When I'm 60.....Evra will be the guy I'm telling the grand children about.....a left back who wouldn't lace Irwin's boots.....or Ashley Cole's......

I agree with everything you said sir. I feel the exact same way. Blew my mind when Real knocked us out and people were ok with it because “at least it was by Ronaldo”.

The disgusting thing is I found it paralleled with throwing abuse at someone like who Rooney who is undoubted legend for United unlike Ronaldo whose case will always be up for a debate.

I’d never consider him a legend of our club. He forced his way out just when he was about to hit his peak. I rarely find myself talking about him as a United player. Controversial maybe, but personally for me, RVP is more of a legend of the club.

Rooney is a United Legend ahead of Ronaldo? The guy who threatened to leave against the guy who had actually the biggest club in the world chasing him? Chelsea vs Real? Are you having a laugh! God I recall 99% of the Cafe calling Rooney out for being the killer of this club not long ago. Ronaldo for 5 years trumps Rooney for 10!

One season wonder RVP trumps Ronaldo for united who we watched grow from a kid to being one of the best youngsters ever to play the game? Righteo.....what the hell is wrong with everyone on here.

Sorry this is nonsense. Ronaldo dicks on every one of those players. A young lad who stayed and played his heart out for this club whilst here. The greatest ever player at this club. He wanted to win and win he did when he moved on. We proved his move a good one.

SAF would agree with me on this which says it all!!!!!!

What does that even mean? :wenger:

Rooney was getting called out because he turned to shit. No one would say anything if he turned into Giggs but like Giggs he actually holds a pretty improrant record for United. You know the one that hasn't been broken in about 40 years...

This thread was always going to turn into the mess that it turned into because ultimately 'legend' is a subjective term that can't be quantified or measured in a way that everyone will agree with.

Not my favourite player by a long stretch but I do consider him a United legend. He achieved too much and give us too much to not be.

Don't care what he did afterwards, but seems a lot of people do. Maybe they care a bit too much.

Rvp......one good season and then crap is never a utd legend.

Cantona, Charlton, Scholes, Best and Robson (among many others) are United Legends.

Ronaldo was just a good player for the club.

Ronaldo was just a good player for the club? This has to be a piss take.

He may not be a legend, but he’s the best player to ever play for United. His 42 goal season was the best by any United player by far, topped of with the league and champions league double. Both of which we wouldn’t have won without Ronaldo

It's hard to believe some of these posts. The guy won the balon d'or here. He won the champions league and scored our only goal in the final. He's arguably the most skilled player to ever wear our shirt (although George Best fans may disagree). Of course he's a United legend.

It's absolutely embarassing that our fans think one player can be a legend of two clubs

Are there any non United fans who think that some player can be legend of more clubs? Especially for a case of Ronaldo, he has won around 4 times at Real Madrid what he did for United, stayed for far longer there, etc.

Because people laugh at United fans like you. United fans are are only set of fans in the world who think player can be legend of two clubs, because we had Ronaldo. Frankly, it's embarassing. Even some Real Madrid fans won't find Ronaldo their legend. But then we have proved over and over that our fans are not really smart anyway, so it's no surprise for this either.

I can understand the argument for ronaldo not being considered a manchester united legend, but him being a real madrid legend is one of the most guaranteed things to ever happen in sport. He is. There's no debate about it. It's one of those cases where you can guarantee that anyone saying otherwise is on the wind up. It would be like saying Paolo Maldini isn't a legend at AC Milan.

Great player obviously but absolutely not. Only ever saw us as a stepping stone, but more importantly, disrespected the club as a United player like no one I've ever seen in my lifetime. What most people are aware of is the constant flirting he used to engage in and the quite disgraceful comments comparing himself to a slave (as if he was doing us a favour by being here LOL) but that's only the tip of the iceberg. The bloke heavily disrespected the Busby Babes as reported in the below article, not to mention him constantly using us for pay rises after he left. Kidding yourself if you think he's a legend.

Spot on mate. Winds me up no end how the bloke who stayed loyal and gave us his prime is mocked and underappreciated yet the chap who used us as a stepping stone and left when we were a top 2 club in the world to join a team that couldn't even get past the CL last 16 is revered and drooled over.

Anderson stayed longer than Ronaldo. It's not just about how long one stayed, but also how much he contributed.

I think staying 6 years while being one of the best players during his stay while it was the most productive era we had; it was enough as a legend in any club in any era.

As another poster has already mentioned, labelling players with legend status is subjective, at least to a certain extent. Legend is not a synonym to "best player". To explain what I'm trying to say, which is also subjective, I would compare Suarez to Dagleish and say the latter is the legend.

Yes. One season wonder who single handedly carried a United side to a title. A player who wanted to play for the club unlike a precious prick who couldn’t wait to leave the club.

I wonder that a lot every time I hear someone talk about Ronaldo as our club legend that has had so many legendary stories to tell. Ronaldo just isn’t one of them.

Which non British, world class player played for United throughout their prime? Can't think of many except goalkeepers and defenders.

He literally did wait a year though... and if Van Persie/Evra/Vidic had Madrid giving them as much money as they were giving Ronaldo then they’d have been dying to go to Spain too. Does anyone seriously doubt this?

Or do you think they would have stayed out of love for the club? Come on...

In the 30 odd years I have been attending matches at OT I reckon only 9 players have left me in awe of their performances.
Beckham, Keane, Scholes, Ronaldo, Fat Ronaldo, Giggs, RvP, RvN and Henry.

Only 1 of those on his debut gave me goosebumps and made me jump out my seat and got the entire stadium shouting like nothing I have ever heard before.

Anyone else there for United V Bolton August 16th 2003 will know exactly what I mean. Jim, the 70 year old season ticket holder we were sat behind turned and said he hadn't heard the crowd react to anyone like that since George Best.

I think that says it all. Yes he's a Madrid legend, but he will always be a United legend for many of us too. I don't care, I'm just glad we had him and It really is one of the best.days of my life his debut on my birthday. Wow, what a present.

Don't know why so much hatred toward CR7 . Real was his dream club and Sir Alex promised will let him go if he stay for another year. He didn't sulk and forced his move did he? He want to be the BEST footballer , and we all know that you have to play for Real or Barcelona if you want to be the BEST !
Even after his move to Real, he keep speak of his happy memories @ Old Trafford , something he never truly achieve at Real even after what he had achieved for them.

Ronaldo had been talking about Madrid being his dream club long before they offered him any money. Him waiting for a year was nothing more than what his contract obligated him to do. On the other hand, RVP came to United and at least to media showed that he loved being at the club. He was massively dicked by SAF retiring and club being shambles since.

Don't consider either as a legend. However, I can certainly understand people who put Ronaldo as one. Being their connection to the club while they were young or such stories like @langster one above would explain it.

But I certainly don't understand and see how someone like RVP can be above him. It was just too short no matter what you put down as a reason.

No, the guy who used our name for years to push Madrid solving his tax problems and giving him better contracts is the legend alright.

Meanwhile our top goal scorer who won every trophy possible with us isn't a legend.

Clearly Ronaldo has an excellent career set up for his retirement... He writes tabloid articles.

Alternatively the tabloids write whatever they want?

If it's repeated every year it's clearly leaked by his agent not just rumors. At some point he even leaked it to the BBC.

Look, I know you're his biggest fan here so we won't reach an agreement but I was replaying on Roony being not legend because he asked to leave once while Ronaldo did the same or even worse so that wasn't a good point to be made by the other poster.

Why was it clear? He is/was the best player in the world, we are/were one of the biggest clubs in the world, one of the few who would be able to afford to sign him. He has a history with us, especially Sir Alex, it's the most obvious story to write.

Do you expect him to be issuing denials whenever the story comes up?

Dont know how someone can look back and see him as United legend, guess views of his fans are a bit different. Personally him being called a legend isnt a big issue for me, more like him having same status as some other legends is. It might be different discussion if he have legends ranks. Either way i am not desperate to have as legend, just because he left and gave his best years to another club and will end as top X best players ever.

Yeah, same for me. Just can't put him in the same tier as Charlton, Robson, Cantona for example.

That's fair enough. I agree to a certain extent and am embarrassed I left Eric from my list, but Eric had games where he would be invisible before unleashing moments of brilliance. Feck, he was the Maestro and at times he created poetry on a football pitch but he never once got the crowd like Christiano did. Yes! He did after moments of brilliance or individual genius, but not like Ronnie did when he would intercept the ball on the halfway line and then run forward regardless of what stood before him.

I think Ronaldo epitomized what many of us call the 'United way ' He Is what we crave. He and Giggs and Eric all took players on and pushed forward no matter what.

That's what has been lacking for years. That is what we envy the dippers for and that is what the oldskool supporters call the United Way and that is what the last three managers have not seen, found or understood or brought to Old Trafford.
