Great point! Smalling and Jones look set to stay here indefinitely, legends. Compare that to someone like Jaap Stam who got jettisoned out of the club, think it's obvious to everyone that the two brothers in arms are definitely higher up the list of legendary centrebacks, longitivity beats quality no doubt about it! Stam never even rocked cornrows whilst playing for us. Overrated much?

Of course he is a United legend but I do think his continued flirting with United during his time at Madrid hurt his status with a lot of United fans. His comments of how much I miss United and I would like to return one day and blah blah when it was just a ruse to get a better contract from Madrid, that pissed me off.
Hang on it was more than a couple of seasons. 3 titles on the trot, a Champions league, a member of arguably the greatest United team ever.
He had 1 incredible season for us. 2 very good ones, and 3 decent ones.

Absolutely yes! Who cares about longevity? the man has come and gone, still he will live in the hearts of United fans as a legend.
Haven't read all of the thread but what it the criteria used to define a legend? If it's longevity in the red shirt, then perhaps he isn't. If it's leaving your mark on the club and turning in fantastic performances, them maybe yes, he is. I do think though, in 10 years or so when people look back on his career, he will be most associated with Real and not United.
He is the player embodiment of Sir Alex Ferguson's idea of the modern attacker. AFAIK he's a legend because he is responsible for some of my greatest memories of this club.

He did indeed particularly when he was playing in France , but he found his spiritual home and a manager who knew how to get the best out of him at United was he a maverick ? Yes , questionable temperament and disciplinary record ? Yes but a talisman who wore his heart on his sleeve , who produced moments of sheer brilliance, who the fans absolutely adored.
Over 20 years after he retired his name is still sang by the fans particularly at this time of year with the anthemic 12 days of Cantona song the word Legend in the dictionary should have his picture along side it.

Integral in winning us the champions league and the double that season. One of only a few Ballon dor winners that played for the club. Won everything here, had argubaly the best season a player has had at Old Trafford. He won everything with us, people are just annoyed he didn't stay longer. I think his celebration against us didn't help recently too. There really is nothing to debate. Is it a question of quantity of time or quality of the time here. I would love to hear the legends from people who thinks he's not?

Evra was with us for 8 years and was an integral player in 5 title wins & a Champions League win. Ruud was here 5 years and was integral in 1 title.
Love them both, but Pat is the bigger legend. I class Ruud and Ronnie as legends too. Ronaldo fecked off to Madrid before he even hit his prime, so he loses United legend points for that. He is a bigger overall football legend than all of them of course.
We've won three CLs only and he was instrumental in one of them. That seals it for me. In 2049, when we win our 'la decima', I might change how I feel about this.

We're not 15 year olds arguing at school. Who gives a feck? Very few things in football are actually embarrassing. It is a game. Fun. Entertainment.

I am not sure about Pirlo, I don't really think Milan fans like him that much as United fans like Ronaldo. @JPRouve ? Pirlo is more legend of the game, and Juve and Milan great. Definitely not legend of both teams.
Seedorf played around 300 games for Milan so I would say he is their legend. I don't think Ajax can claim he is their legend at all. He played over 100 games for Real Madrid, does anyone even remembers him playing there, let alone thinks he is their legend?
Suarez is Liverpool's legend almost the same as Ronaldo is ours. Smaller club mentality thinking he is their legend when in reality he fecked off to a bigger club in his mind. He would sign for Real Madrid too if they called him. Never in a million years Liverpool legend. Well, except in Liverpool fans brains.
I am not sure about Shearer, but he is definitely not Blackburn legend having played more than 300 games for Newcastle.

This is forgotten so often. At the end of the day it is how you enjoy it. I enjoy football and enjoy thinking of Ronaldo as a Manchester United legend. Simple as that. If someone believes Ronaldo is not what they associate Man United with then good for them.
Everyone has a right to call a player a legend or not. After all, we are arguing about who is a "legend" I mean wtf does that even mean?
