I think there are some subtle differences and those will increase in the next few rounds. Like Messi and Zidane being taken much later than in an all-time, Fontaine (and Hamrin) taken in the first round.

Some consider it as All-time draft indeed.

My personal understanding: choose a player for his performances during a specific major tournament and use him in the same role.

Kopa WC 1958 was a central playmaker/AM. It won't make sense to deploy him as a RW despite the fact he played in that position with Real.

Another example, Jairzinho has be considered as a better player than Messi in this context.

I've taken Hamrin in the previous draft so let's say @Annahnomoss did want to make he sure he'll get him :devil:

Given his track record, Zidane is clearly an anomaly: SF 96, Winner 98 & 00, Finalist 06

I have ignored him because I couldn't use both Zidane and Kopa because they reached their international peak in a relatively similar role.

The double edge with Zidane is that for every legendary performance against Brazil he has a red card and misses an extra match in a tournament where only a half dozen matches are available for consideration

Hamrin was like you say purely because he's the one in my theme that I thought people would go for. Which is why this theme is so important for me and I hope I get to finish it smoothly as he wasn't even the best winger in the Swedish team in '58.

I see what you mean :)

However, Zidane has to be judged on his impact and style of play during a specific tournament (Zidane 2004 was a left-midfielder in a 4-4-2 system while he was generally the central #10 in the other tournaments).

People seem a bit skiddish about picking the Copa America/credible Olympics heroes. I hope that this is not the case though and that they are just starting with the WC/Euro ones and then move on to the Copa/Olympics ones. Some shambolic exclusions so far to say the least, one entire team from the Olympics and your prince too from CA.

Yeah I just want to push people to really dare to do it. A flawless Copa or a perfect Olympics tournament in the old days against good opposition is worth more than anything but a perfect Euro/World Cup.

One GOAT still isn't picked; plus a few picks later people will start picking players who shone on international tournaments and weren't as good elsewhere, like the little general who shat on Matthäus in the Euro's draft - but with the inclusion of WC, Copa and Olympics. Should be interesting

Look at the broad list of tournaments available. If you're a top player and haven't performed in one of those, you're not really a top player. And if you analyse the R1/R2 picks, at least 14 of those had absolutely stellar tournaments and it's very obvious what is intended there. I do hope though that we get more unsung heros from these tourneys in the second half of the drafting.

The previous WC draft worked well in that respect. Really looking forward to the match thread debates to hone in on those tournament performances.
