our spinners bowled terribly, though. England have been consistently getting their batsmen to drive. That makes them cagey. We allowed them to play off the back foot, a lot.

Because they've bowled in the right areas. Ashwin and Harbhajan kept on bowling short to Cook and KP. Ojha's the only one who has been good.
Credit must go to KP playing fearless aggressive cricket. He changed spinners mindset, and in the process they lost their confidence.

I think a lot of people talking bull in this thread.
The main problem with India is the poor and sloppy batting. Terrible judgement and shots. They've had this problem for a long time now. Too risky and not enough temperament to play tests from some of the batsman.

Monty in particular is 'in the groove' and getting wonderful spin. Beautiful passage of play.
If you actually take out the lead India's score could be quite competitive.
I think complete opposite. They've been too cautious. Check all the dismissals (Virat being an exception).
But that is essemtially saying Cooks ton did not happen!
Simply put, Ashwin and Harbajhan were very poor and KP was inspired and majestic. Thats the test right there.

Yes.
None of these are comparable to laxman and dravid for staying in and salvaging a situation. Sachin and Sehwag never perform in the second innings.
actually, there os no way 92/6 can be competitive in any form of cricket under any circumstance!

Because we have not produced any good spinners for a long long time. Even someone like Ojha is having a purple patch now will probably disappear in an year. I don't rate Ahswin at all.
