India politics thread

Poonam Mahajan had won in 14 and 19..

5/6 in Mumbai too.. fecking hell..
unexpected ..

Assembly elections coming up..
Mumbai North West recount gives BJP the seat by 30 odd votes. Result was called to SS UBT before apparently :nervous:

I wonder what kinda shit BJP will pull now to try and radicalise again
Probably some riot in UP or maybe a missile towards Pakistan

Thought the postal ballots were counted in the morning before evm votes were counted. SSUBT will definitely challenge it in court.
Ideally yes that's the way it should have been done. But wherever there is a recount, I have noticed that postal ballots will suddenly increase or several will be discarded as invalid

Yes that should challenge in court but are there any precedents like these with things getting overturned? I can't recall any

At best the court could order a recount to exclude certain postal ballots or to include certain postal ballots.

Yeah the shorts euphoria has died down, it's soon going to be business as usual
I’m still on cloud 9 to be honest. The comedic content on twitter (which i used to avoid) has been and continues to be pure gold. People are absolutely piling into the supreme illiterate and generally enjoying that not being this taboo topic we need to stear clear of. There’s no doubt tyrants will soon be tyranting and the institutions will take a long while to change their bootlicking ways, but I’m going to enjoy this window of good fun.

Oh yes, completely agree with that

Here, enjoy some more:

India will eventually join the US and China as one of the world's major powers.

Okay, this isn’t really an Indian politics question, it’s a cultural one, but this is the most recent, somewhat relevant thread I could find on India…

I had a colleague from India whose name on our directory is listed as FNU [Last Name]. I never asked them what FNU stood for and then they changed schools and I was basically “oh well, I’ll never know”. But then she came up in a convo recently and someone from her department told me that she told them it meant “first name unknown”.

Is that a common thing..?

No, it's not a common thing. In fact, it's not a thing at all. It is something unique with that lady.

That’s good to know. I wonder why / how she has an unknown first name?

Like, I want to email and ask her, but then again, I feel that would be super awkward.

I think it's got a bit to do with the US visa system. My visit visa also has the same, 3 words: FNU Given_Name Given_Name2. I guess that ends up sticking for all US documentation afterwards.

I don't have a surname in my Indian passport so had to put it this way for the US visa application rather than go thru the hassle of first having to fix the Indian passport.

Either of the non-FNU words in her name would be her calling/first name

Ahhh… okay. Thank you for the explanation there! This has to be what’s going on here.

Edit: side thought - does this also have something to do with why the Indian female wrestlers were constantly having just one of their names shown twice on Olympics coverage when they quite clearly were being called by 2 different names by the commentators?

It happened to all of them.

No worries! Think you might also come across some LNU (last name unknown) as well. I think I saw that suggestion on some guideline somewhere too.

Around the wrestlers bit (and I think also the boxers), I'm not sure what's going on, as all of them actually have a surname, and they are known by the <first name> <last name>.

It might have something around the names that federation is sending for the athletes

Yes on this one I think you're right.
