Talk about a team that's stuck in the old ways, the Oilers are a perfect match. No matter how many bad years they have, it's always the same old country club in charge.
They need to do what people in Montreal saw a few years ago: basically clearing up the whole staff, and then hire a group of winners, perhaps having no past affiliation with the Oilers but being raised as Edmontonians. When I think of Marc Bergevin (the player), I have memories of a player who made his name mainly with Chicago, the Islanders and Hartford. After his playing career, he learned the executive's job with an organization that reinvented itself (Chicago) and won a Stanley Cup there as an assistant GM. You would be surprised to see how he kept Montreal deep in his heart after all this time and appears to understand the city's hockey culture better than most people around. Since he became our GM, I don't have that much to complain about after the mess his predecessors left us with. Not bad for someone who never played for the Habs.
Perhaps the only slight gripe I have with Bergevin is that he never seemed interested in signing/trading picks for Jaromir Jagr no matter how many times Jagr appeared interested to have his chance in Montreal at least once since his return in the NHL. It's a shame because we all know how Jagr and Tomas Plekanec are so good together on the Czech national team, and Jagr can be a good mentor for the many young players we have while adding extra punch forward.
