ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

Must win for Aus this.. Lost the toss but still asked to chase.. so not too bad I suppose.

Got on a long distance night train with Afghanistan 180-6.

I think you were wrongly hopeful with this team. I kind of felt all through that this team just isn’t that good in these conditions. Of course I expected them to beat Afghanistan but overall there are far too many holes in the team.

Have to say England’s team balance is very odd. 4 seamers in India? Why is Woakes playing in these conditions?

Too many allrounders. Livingstone, Curran, Woakes. They’re all playing as either front line bowlers or batting in the top 6. You need to be an elite allrounder in the mould of Kallis, Watson, Stokes, Shakib etc. to manage that.

Malan, Bairstow, Root, Brook, Stokes, Buttler, Livingstone/Ali, Rashid, Willey, Wood, Topley.

Top 6 need to be your 6 best batsmen. 8-11 need to be your best bowlers.

Proper top 6 with a good allrounder at 7. 3 good seamers, 3 solid spin options. You don’t even need Stokes to bowl.

Willey is an underrated bowler. Excellent in the powerplay with his swing. Would be starting for most other teams.

My bet for England to get the most sixes is looking a bit dodgy !

Where has the gung-ho England gone ?

I defo had concerns - we look old, average is about 33.And Butler is a terrible captain.

Stokes coming in gives us a chance still.

It's clear for anyone to see our batting lineup is still one, if not the strongest in the world on its day.

They aren't firing on all cylinders at the moment and the bowling attack is well short of the required quality to win a major tournament.

I wouldn't back this current England side to win a home World Cup, never mind one in Indian conditions.

They now have to produce perfect performances for the rest of the group stage against some tough opponents to have even a chance of going through.

We can likely lose one more - but even so it's not looking massively likely. Not sure the fire is there

Based on early form here, Eng and Aus will struggle to get to the semis. India, SA & NZ have started the tournament well.

Still a lot of cricket to be played though. India will be the team to beat, but knockout cricket is a funny and unpredictable old sport.

Why is half the ball pink?
Going back to this from yesterday, slightly surprised it wasn't mentioned more. Commentary brought it up on the replay and then just moved on. Close shots of Gurbaz in the field showed him with what looked like reddish paint covering the palm of his hand so I'm assuming it came from that. The umpire must have noticed it so the ball should have been replaced.

Weird considering the umpire collects the ball and keeps it in his pocket after every over from each end. It was a good delivery but that paint may have caused just about enough deviation to deceive Buttler.

Considering how much is made out of ball tampering, sandpaper, use of saliva, ball being out of shape etc. it's indeed odd that no one bats an eyelid when there's a dash of paint on one side of the ball

4 matches in a row with a collapse in the middle phase. I think the rapid chases from NZ/Ind and Pak's 345 chase has made teams batting first a bit paranoid. They're all trying to post mammoth totals and losing their way between overs 20-40.

This is what makes NZ so good, they’re great at the tactical aspects and assessing the pitches.

The stadium is falling apart .. wtf

209.. Aus would be delighted with this.. SL middle order was terrible.

209 all out

Not even the slightest bit surprised.

It's probably better for the tournament if Australia win anyway. Could end up with a fun three way tussle between Aus, Pak and Eng for the 4th spot.

But a long way to go for that to play out yet.

It is better if New Zealand or South Africa win as they haven't won it before and have good exciting teams.

Not enough credit in here for England single-handedly trying to liven this world cup up.

2 from 16 in a shortened game. Why do all teams bar England have a wasteman like this in the top order?

200 would give us a hint of a game here,

SA could chase that in 25 overs though.

210 would be nice. Pitch seems flat but Saffers will have the T20 WC choke from last year burnt in their memory. They’ve only batted first so far so could be different pressure under lights.

What a recovery that is from the Dutch, and possibly a little window into why SA are unlikely to win this tournament - clueless under pressure

What was their top order doing? Great from the being 140-7 after 34 overs..
Over a 100 in the last 9 overs from that position.. incredible.

Their batting order is odd. Weird omission of Tom Cooper from the squad (not injured nor retired) who averages 45 in the format. Edwards is the second best batsman they've ever had, shouldn't be batting any lower than 5. Rvd Merwe with his experience is a typical no. 7 for a team like this.
