ICC Cricket World Cup 2023

A long way to go in this game but overall England's bowling just isn't at the level required when you compare it to the likes of India and South Africa. Woakes started terribly in 2019 as well so not hugely concerned about him, but Curran doesn't really offer enough and Rashid has been declining for a year or two now.

Atkinson will come in for Curran or Woakes by the end of the tournament. I think we have enough on paper.

Afghanistan's story is truly meteoric. The only cricket comments I read in sort of late 2000s was the Guardian and I remember the Guardian newsletter readers had a fund raising to build a concrete pitch in Kabul - which they ended up building from memory

From that to this is just unbelievable. Beyond a point, though, you need infra(and a stable democracy) and I think they won't climb beyond this unfortunately for them

I thought it was very cool how the IPL finals had one team with 3/4 allowed overseas players being from Afghanistan and Ireland. Would not have been in anyone's imagination 10 years ago.

Cricket needs these stories, not just for the sake of the game with more competitors, but because sport has this historic way of uniting a nation's identity. I remember reading this CNN article, which puts the meteoric rise of cricket in terms of Afghan identity in context. They have only gone from strength to strength since.

I agree that a lack of grassroot infrastructure will hinder their development beyond participation and the odd win for now. That said, I still believe that much like early Indian teams, remarkably resilient individuals will continue to rise and stand out beyond expectations. When you survive through such difficult living conditions and rise to represent a country's primary source of emotional pride on a global stage, you are built different. As long as they keep producing big names that shine on the international stage consistently, and the country finds pride in their exploits, they will find a way to develop the infrastructure for the game over the decades to come. I can think of Rashid, Nabi and Mujeeb off the top of my head. That list needs to keep growing.

at Least England have bogged down Ibrahim 26 off 45.
Hopefully that’s not Topley’s WC finished

Good riddance. This Zadran seems to be the same calibre of wasteman as Bavuma, Marnus and Imam.

That would leave a very weak tail and Atkinson is also hugely inexperienced in this format. Woakes took 4 wickets in the first 5 games of the 2019 WC averaging nearly 55 at over 6rpo. After that he took 12 in 6 at 18.91 with 4.54rpo. He'll come good in a game or two.

Hopefully Topley is okay here but no doubt the calls for Archer will be starting anytime now!

On the same note of cricket as a medium of unity, I appreciate how the IPL has fostered closer relations between not only the players of different nations but also the fans. David Warner is absolutely adored in Hyderabad (the affinity seems genuinely mutual).

In this very game, as Pollock pointed out from the commentary box, you could hear the Delhi crowd roar and cheer as Stokes made his way around the ropes.

Topley might have just injured himself, that would be a BIG problem.
If Topley is injured we're properly fecked.

He's been our best bowler in this world cup so far by miles.

It'd be a big loss, as so far our medium paced swing bowling all rounders haven't had much success.

But. Worth noting that Archer is a travelling reserve and its believed he'd be fit enough to play in the latter stages of the tournament. It could work out fantastically for Archer, and it'd add a whole lot of quality to the bowling attack. Ideally we'd have Archer, Topley and Wood all available at the same time though.

Also given that spin has been dominant today, there's also the option of bringing Moeen back in. In conditions like these he's surely preferable to Woakes and Curran, assuming he's fit. I'm not aware of why he didn't play today. And having Root as an option for a few overs is always useful.

Edit: oh, Topley is bowling still. I'm only listening on radio and behind

This is a great recovery by the Afghans. At 5 for 170, they could have easily folded out for 200 or so.

The Afghans are showing up the Pakistanis from yesterday in how to rebound when you’re up against it (yes I’m still upset).

England in trouble here.. the pitch wont be easy to bat on.. especially with the spinners to come.

Dunno if it'll turn out to be so yet, but it's about time we had some kind of close, competitive game.

Wasn't expecting this to be it.

Afghanistan on top here. What’re the odds like right now of an Afghan win?..

Once again poor captaincy from Afghan captain, why wouldn’t you bring Rashid now? This is the best English batting pair left.

Think he's being sensible for once. England's RR is going nowhere. Rashid more or less holding up one end between overs 20-45 can strangle the entire chase.

If England play 50 overs they have the batting to chase this. If Afghanistan want to win this game, they need to send buttler packing as early as possible.
