ICC Cricket World Cup 2011

May I just point to my first post in this thread some months ago.

I've been right about everything except Pakistan thus far. And Pakistan have plenty opportunity to prove me right still.

Well played sir.

But I don't see us as such overwhelming favorites at the moment. I think Pakistan are playing in such an uninhibited way that I think they'll get the better of us. In their case, I feel they are playing almost above themselves and I don't think we're playing our best ATM. And Sri Lanka are looking very very good.

But yeah, it's definitely between the Asian teams IMO. Personally, I don't fancy us against either as things stand. Our bowling is just not up there.

It's strange how go back some time and we had a Pathan who was swinging the ball a mile and providing guaranteed break throughts with the new ball, then we had Ishaant Sharma who burst on to the scene as such an amazing young talent. Had we not let those big talents go off track (Ishaan still has lots of time) we wouldn't have had these problems with our bowling.

For all the doubters.

Looks photoshopped.

So yesterday, the South African team went out and today the South African B team went out. Both are useless feckers tbh.

What do you dislike about Sangakkara?

Sanctimonious pr*ck (him, not you). Pakistan played Sri Lanka a few times under him and he pretty much refuses to acknowledge our existence. My clearest memory is the 20/20 world cup we won, according to him only one team played and Sri Lanka lost.

He seemed a little more generous after the defeat this world cup but not enough bridges built for me yet.

So two of the QF matches finish with the opposition winning by 10 wickets. Both losers were teams that just beat out Bangladesh to qualify.

Hell if they were going to get thrashed why not give Bangladesh a chance? At least we would have enjoyed making it that far

:(

In cricketing terms it is impossible to lose by anything more than 10 wickets when bowling second. But Bangladesh would have found a way. Probably for the best they went out on a mini high BTV.

So three teams from Pakistan's qualifying group are through to the semis. Only India flying the flag for the other group. Though the minnows from our group were arguably easier (Zimbabwe, Canada and a wretched Kenya) this didn't dull the remaining teams' edge and desire.

Edit: forgot to mention two of the teams from India's group knocked out by 10 wickets each.

Well at least the world cup will be won by a team from the sub continent (NZ won't get past Sri Lanka).

I think India and Sri Lanka have to be the favorites. England have a very good chance, and South Africa will be a dangerous team, but will choke as always.

I'd love to see India-Pak match at some point.

You got that right.

You asked for it and you got it!

I'm glad I got that right, I just hope it's an entertaining game and nothing controversial happens on or off the pitch.

like feck it should.

its already a travesty that commonwealth nations took to cricket over football. fecking upper class administrators too posh to bring football to their territories.

Some commonwealth nations. Not all. The likes of Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Canada et al have nothing to do with the game. Only commonwealth nations that are shite at football concentrate on cricket. Which is why it should be spread to shite footballing nations, full stop. Like Wales.

More like a risk that paid off, and I took the risk because I wanted to watch the match. And I didn't look to sell. People offered to buy. Big difference. The kept upping the sum until I could not say no.

You bought 10 tickets for a cricket wc semifinal in India with india still in, courageous stuff.

So you offered them the tickets at face value and they preferred to pay you more?

yup, just wish we'd taken to football as well. another billion to the global football talent pool.

Only potential downside of an Indian WC win is that Indian sport might end up living on the 'glory of 2011' for the next 30 years.

Shame for England. Far too many injuries to a whole host of key players to stand much of a chance in this WC. Just plain unlucky in that respect.

Shall look forward to India v Pakistan on Wednesday.

I see. Fair enough. I'm a casual cricket fan, so I don't really pay much attention to stuff off the pitch. Either way I wouldn't let it bother you too much, especially when you have such a bloody good record against us (SL)!

I got the tickets even before the quarter final draw, hoping that India would get in the semis. Fortunately it turned out to be India Pakistan.

And no I didn't offer to sell them the tickets, in fact I declined to sell at the first few offers. It was when the offer reached a substantial amount that I could not refuse.

Have to say, I'm really, really impressed by Kohli. He hasn't put out a match winning performance yet, but he's got amazing mental strength. Came out in the Australia match and played like it was a bilateral series against Zimbabwe.

Yeah I have become a huge fan of the lad. After Tendulkar, he has become my favorite batsman in the current Indian side.

I still think Kohli is a better #3 than Gambhir because Gambhir is a good player of spin while Kohli thrives against pace.

Gambhir is seriously the most under-rated player in our team, but I'm a huge fan of his. He is a very good player of pace and excellent player of spin, I think he is an ideal no. 3 for us. He gives us loads of stability in the middle order.

Back to the England post mortem

Samit Patel would have been an ideal player for this WC. Very competent spin bowler and batsman. Given a guaranteed place I'm sure he would have worked hard to eliminate a few kilos.

Thanks for the jinx. :)

To counter that jinx, we have just as good a record over Sri Lanka as India have over us. :)

He would have coped well enough with the extra few...

He would have eaten the opposition for lunch. Unfortunately, I mean this literally and that would certainly contravene ICC fair play regulations.

So prediction time.

How many effigies will be burned and how many riots will erupt after the match on Wednesday?

I'd say about 0.25 effigies per losing player per square mile of the losing country.

Ponting just tipped India to beat/annihilate Pakistan. Here's an excerpt from Cricinfo:

"No surprise Sri Lanka today, everyone probably picked that, although the margin is quite surprising and I think they are going to be right in it now. I think Sri Lanka will beat New Zealand and I think India will beat Pakistan and if it ends up being an India Sri Lanka final it will be a great game of cricket."

Are Pakistan still in the world cup? Have to keep checking here and cricinfo to make sure. No mention from Ponting of the shameful sub-180 they struggled to make against us or the fact we were the team sandwiching their 34 game unbeaten run. Certainly would be a travesty if Pakistan somehow beat India and ruined a "great game of cricket" in the final.

No matter, I suppose it continues making us the underdogs which makes Afridi's job easier. :)

Weird post.

All he's saying is that an India Sri Lanka final will be a great game of cricket.

Why the insecurity?

You seem to have an inferiority complex. Cricinfo's full of articles about Pakistan players, interviews with Misbah, Hafeez, etc. There's nothing about India, because the Indian management has banned press conferences except the mandatory one after the match. If anything, it's India who've been under the radar.

Yeah we seem to be keeping mum this time.

I don't see how take what pointing said in the wrong manner.

BTW I'm actually contemplating not watching the game on Wednesday on the telly. Don't know if my nerves can handle it !

Are you like that too? My friends when I was in India would do the same. They would not watch any big games because they think it is better. Like its a bad omen or something. Me, I love the nerves in big games - same for United and India and same for any other team I support. I love watching crunch games.

Im not actually like that. I don't think ive ever missed a game for such reasons. Just contemplating it this time, very mild contemplation I must add. I don't know if I love the crunch games when it comes to India and united, because it can either lift your spirits or destroy them, so its a two edged sword.

So as I said I've never believed in that bad omen nonsense. But this time I'm contemplating maybe tuning in late when the game has settled and taken shape a bit. Really doubt ill be able to do that though. Reckon ill be absolutely glued :D
