Howard Webb's Performance

He made a monumental error in the first half and then tried to make amends for it....when we were 3-0 down. fecking useless and if he's the best referee in the country then we're in real trouble.

Yep, would have been a completely different game if he rightfully whistled a penalty for Cahill's challenge on Welbeck at 0-0

As it stood, he awarded two dodgy ones, especially the 2nd one with Ivanovic sliding (and even withdrawing his foot to avoid a challenge), but it was too late as we were 0-3 down

Cahill got the ball in the beginning, Welbeck was dragging his feet trying to make it look like a foul. Go watch it again, clean tackle.

Sturridge's episode was a penalty, imo. He did make contact, quite stupidly I might add, and Evra was more than happy to oblige.

Third was never a penalty. Another playacting from Welbeck and huge error on part of Webb.

I don't think Webb did a bad job today. He gets one look at things from one angel, and he is running to keep up with the game. From the angle he saw the second penalty shout it definitely looked like the defender played the ball first. We had four 'soft' penalty shouts and got two of them.

Ferguson's gone off one at the assistant ref, says it wasn't Webb's fault

I never thought Young was a penalty until I saw it again on TV.

Welbeck was fouled outside the box - technically its a sending off.

Very poor performance from Webb. What is with some refs afraid to make a big call early in the game? fecking bottlers..

.

I think it was the same linesamn who gave the penalty to newcastle on Rio fair tackle from 45 yards away but didnt say anything about Cahill tackle or the shirt pull.

The Young one was definitely a penalty, the Welbeck one my mind changes every time I watch it, was certainly a foul though, and there were a couple more in injury time with that dick head Luiz and Torres's handball.

That at Chelsea is what we call 'doing an Elleray'.

Let's not forget foul on Luiz after which de Gea made that save.

Some ridiculously biased comments in this thread. No way would any of you say the Young "penalty shout" was a pen if it were a Chelsea player in our box. Welbeck pen was also very soft. The Evra one was crystal clear, and the one with Cahill on Welbeck in the first half was clearly outside the box.

Im normally a fan of Webb's style of refereeing but today he was poor overall with several weird decisions. I think both sets of supporters will think he gave them the short end of the stick today - when both sets are unhappy with your performance it has been shit. But in no way was he biased against us with his decisions.

I think he should get some credit for managing to keep tight rivalry games like this relatively card free. He gives players a talking to and keeps things calm, and isnt a card-happy idiot like Atkinson.

With regard to the Young one, he clearly has his shirt pulled, that's a foul, and it's in the area, so it's a penalty.

yes in the beginning then he fouled welbeck after he got clear of him on goal. peno and a red card.

The Young incident in the first half was no penalty and Young probably should have been booked for diving... so in that sense Webb bottled the call.

Never mind the two penalties... late in the game Luiz CLEARLY fouls Evans right in front of Webb and it looked to me like Torres handles the ball (although someone moaned at me in an earlier post that the replays proved less than conclusive about the Torres hand ball... I haven't seen them)... but it almost moot since Webb should have been pointing to the spot for the foul on Evans.

Then in injury time Luiz BLATANTLY dives to win a free kick in a tackle w. Scholes a. NOT a free kick and b a yellow for diving. Imagine if we'd fought back to tie at three and lost as a result of that free kick?

3 out of 10 from England's best referee.

Vidic pulls people's shirts all day long, and I never see people here claiming our opponents get cheated out of penos every game. Almost all defenders pull on shirts, and only in very severe instances will the referee even consider a penalty. The tug on Young's shirt lasted for less than a second and the way he theatrically went to ground didnt help his cause at all. I was embarassed looking at it, and everyone would be raging if we got a penalty against us for something like that.

Apart from all the bad decisions... Did anyone notice how he always stands in the way of important passing routes in midfield? I noticed a bunch of times when he was basically in the face of the player with the ball in midfield, and usually standing next to him instead of behind him so he limited his view of the other flank. He then took the piss when he almost walked into Scholes as he was trying to go around a Chelsea player near the end.

I think it's harsh saying that about Webb. The Berbatov pen against Liverpool was after about two minute, and the Gerrard sending off was still fairly early on. The problem is that you have to be 100% sure at that time more than any.

then write a strongly-worded letter to the FA - even though Vidic has conceded penalties through shirt tugging

never known a season like it for refs getting in the way

I think he went out with the plan to let the game flow on and not give early cards.

We should have had a pen in the first half. I think he bottles the Torres handball - he probably didn't want to give one team 3 pens in a half, unless it was stonewall.

IMO, refs worry to much about not "spoiling the game". It's their job to apply the laws of the game. They should just give what they see.

Clean tackle.

Unless you count Welbeck continuing his run and tripping over Cahill's ass a foul.

^^ Looks to me like Welbeck got there first. No touch from Cahill, think he was a bit lucky

If Cahill gets the ball, you can argue that the actual foul is inside the box. Welbeck is still going to retain possession after the initial tackle and then Cahill brings him down.

What really fecks me off is when referees clearly see something, but then don't give it, or give something else, because it's easier than giving the correct decision.

For example, when Luiz dived into Scholes. It was a clear dive, it didn't look like a foul, it didn't even look like it might have been a foul, the "speed of the game" wasn't an issue because it was clear as day...but Webb gave the freekick because Chelsea are the home side and United might have broken on them if not.

It was the same with the Welbeck challenge. Webb sees it clearly. There's been a load of tackles similar to Kompany's one that officials have seen clearly and chosen not to act on. They know the rules, the players have a responsibility to know the rules, so stop avoiding doing your jobs properly and send them off. Or at least clarify why you're suddenly not sending them off for what was a non rescindable sending off two weeks ago.

What's the point in having respect campaigns if officials don't have enough integrity to referee the game as they see it? If they're going to be cowards, give them microphones so we all know exactly when they bottle a decision, and force them to man up.

The officiating yesterday was a joke.
