Gaming Horizon: Zero Dawn (PS4)

On paper it's the kinda game I don't care for, but so far it's fabulous.

Told you mate, to be honest, I kinda felt the same, thought we'd be looking at Tomb Raider with robots or something but it really is stunning.

Been playing this game for the past week or so and its top notch.

As an aside, Im a bit confused about the back story of the world itself. Is it a completely parallel universe? Its got a historic, Red Dead Redemption feel to it on the one hand, and then you have these robot animals running around the place, which feels kind of futuristic. Who populated the world with robotic goats and horses? And why? Does that all come to light in the course of the story, or do we just have to accept it? It isnt a problem for my enjoyment or anything, Im just interested.

But yeah, really enjoying it.

All will be revealed.

How far are you into it?

Some is explained through the main story. A lot more of the world building is done through audio and text logs that you find along the way.

Usually audio and text logs are a bit of a narrative crutch but HZD does them well. There is some cool little mini-stories in there.

I was on my way to Meridian, had a tricky fight with a corruptor and some watchers, won that, got into some fort type place. Done various side missions along the way. Spent quite a few hours hunting boar and things like that to upgrade my equipment, and doing some side missions like helping Sona avenge the slaughter of her war party. Im not far in at all.

I had zero interest in this when it was announced and zero when it was released.

Cant believe how good it is.

I know comfortably beat things like shell walkers and saw tooths and those fire throwers if they only have a couple of friends. But when they have two.or three of them together, then its a bit hard
I figured out why I never paid attention to this when it was released. I thought it was a sequel to Heavenly Sword, one of the Ps4 launch games  I just saw red headed female protagonist and assumed it was that.

Don't worry, keep going forward and all your questions will be answered. It's actually very satisfying to learn everything there is to know about the world and its central mystery.

I have never seen a game that has intrigued me like that when it comes to the main plot. They have truly nailed it, loved learning more and more with all the various hidden clues, the vantage points, the holograms, the messages. Everything played a role

It's nice change to have a normal female character, as in without big boobs or a big ass (not that there is anything wrong with those things). I don't know, it's made her more "normal"

I swear that was I thought too when playing for the first couple of hours. I loved Tomb Raider but HZD is something else

Last night, to quench my thirst for knowledge, I went to the Sigma Cauldron. All went fine till I got to the bellowback. Couldn't get close to beating that bloody thing, had to give up and go to bed in the end. Worried ill have to load an earlier save and just miss that part out now till I'm stronger. But I thought the cauldron was recommended for level 8 and im higher than that.

Got this on black Friday sales and have barely played it. Got as far as breaking into tribe but haven't even switched ps4 on since.

If you're higher than the recommended level you might just need to change up your weapons / tactics.

Just lay loads of traps before the fight. They should do more than half the work.
That is some good, practical advice. Cheers.

My problem is I have arrived at this point with a moderate level of health but no health potions and insufficient resources to craft more.

But yeah, Ill try this. I didnt check on YouTube to see how others have done it, Ill do that if I cant do it with the traps.

Maybe it scales up? I did this the other day when I was at least level 18 or so and it was tough

Go nuts with the ropecaster and traps before you let the Bellowback out, then time your dodges correctly and you should get through it ok. Also take out the Watchers before you jump down if there are any. Jesus, what a game :)

Spamming traps is a good strategy. Just use everything you have and stock up later. Best way to deal with a bellowback is prioritizing the reservoirs on his back and the one under his body. Especially the one on the back is a huge target. Use your best arrows to speed up the process. Destroying them can cripple the bellowback, doing serious damage and limiting his attacks. It also results in a huge explosion, so keep your distance. A ropecaster to tie him down helps as well.

I havent got a ropecaster yet. Have a few traps and a tripwire thing. Only other weapons Ive actually invested in at this point are a rattler and a sharpshoot bow, neither of which seem to be a huge help for this. Seems like I got precisely the wrong weapons for this mission, Id be better off with a ropecaster and a sling. Oh well.

I actually meant to write tripcaster rather than ropecaster. The tripcaster can deal some serious damage.

People who commented earlier, especially @Shane88 and @PhilQ. I took your advice. About 18 rope traps and all the bombs I had laid out before the fight. Did it first time. Thank you. I like you both. I like you a lot.

Sweet. Good man!

I loved the cauldrons. The enemies inside get progressively tougher with each one as you can imagine.

Finally completed! One of the best games I’ve played in over a decade, only thing I felt it lacked was diversity of weapons / upgrades and a light on skill upgrades.

What next? Is the expansion worth it? Is The Witcher good? I basically want Baldurs Gate with amazing gfx.

Yes to both.

If you haven't played the Witcher 3 then fecking get on it asap.

I'd recommend giving something else a go first and then Witcher. I went straight out and bought the Witcher 3 straight after completing Horizon and didn't like it at all.

I think it was the clumsy handling after the very natural, "right" feeling controls of Horizon but it just didn't compare well at all.

So I got this badass suit of armour by collecting the power cells last night. Now I'm wondering if I've broken the game in the sense of making it a bit too easy. I guess I could only wear it in emergencies. Or maybe the story is still fun despite being basically invincible. Or maybe the late missions are that hard having it will be quite useful in getting me through. It awesome anyway. Sylens' cane thing is good too, my inability to upgrade my spear, despite having loads of spear mods, was starting to get on my tits.

Yeah that armor makes the game much easier, it's almost cheat mode, I'd avoid using it if you feel comfortable doing so, although the final battle will be very tough without it.

Also the frozen Wilds, which is definitely worth playing, is much harder than the base game so it'll probably help there too.

How long is the Frozen Wilds? I actually started that last night as well, I didnt realise until I got there that it wasnt just another side mission. Not sure whether to go and complete the main storyline and then come back, or to just do it now and then go back to the main game after. Im always quite cautious when it starts to feel like I'm getting near the end of the main storyline, because once I complete that I sometimes lose motivation to carry on and play side missions and collect things.

For all I know there is actually loads of story left, but it certainly feels like the final fight might be close.

I would wait, the Frozen Wilds has new weapons and skills that will make the main game easier then, and it's a good 15 hour story unto itself.

Played this for about 2 days and never touched it again. Was enjoyable to begin with but something about it just felt like it'd be doing the same things over and over for a long time and wasn't into that.

Your really missed a lot doing that. Try to get into it again and trust me, it's not like what you believe.

Maybe. Just haven't had the time recently either. I bought Wolfenstein and while I really enjoyed that I haven't played it for about 2 weeks.

Shame, but I suggest giving it another go whenever you get time for it.
