You could throw the Chelsea goal in there as well. Not bad for a player who really has only been in the first team for about a year.

What about the rest of the games? He (Lingard) should in no way start before Mykhitarin Martial or Rashford imo. Decent squad player but not starting 11 material Tom Cleverly level.

If fit and given his performance against a City, do you think he will start at Anfield next Monday night?

No chance, I'd have thought. His confidence can't be great as is, so imagine what following up his City nightmare with a bad game against Liverpool would do?

Agreed. It's possibly the worst game for him to be thrown back into.

I think Jose's message about players not being mentally strong enough, or have the right character for these games was quite linked to him unfortunately.

We could use him as a sub once the game opens up a bit, but at the start isn't the best to play him.

Use him in the next league game instead, he needs less pressure to get his season started IMO.

Luckhurst reckons he isn't in the squad tonight. Starting to get concerned about him if that's the case. No reason he couldn't of been on the bench if fully fit which apparently he was.

I just expressed this concern in the Liverpool vs United thread. When is he going to start playing? Does Mourinho just not fancy him or something? Is he ever going to get a run in the team?

Surely he'll start one of the next couple of games we have coming up?

Wouldn't worry too much, he's probably not fully fit and definately not fully sharp so it's wise to leave him out and bring him into the midweek game and let him play his way into form. Not been an ideal start for him at utd but have some patience and he will come good.

The cynic in me thinks that Jose has seen something with him he doesn't like, and that's what's preventing him playing time. But maybe it's just a matter of patience like TrustinJanuzai says above. Certainly though these are the games he is made for, games in which a quick counter could punish Liverpool.

I think it is simply just not wanting to throw him into one of the hardest away matches of the season straight after injuries and patchy form. Let him get fit and ease him in against some minor teams at OT.

He was absolute arse when he played v City, and this is a bigger game. Not really surprised.

I'd be more worried if he wasn't starting against Fenerbahce.

Needs to be fit. Will play in the EFL/Europa league before the league .Needs to get in rhythym dont worry abt him.

I can't help but think back to the rumours that signing Mkhitaryan was a 'favour' to Raiola as we wanted Pogba and thought we could make some use out of him. At 27 years old, he's in real danger of never getting his United career off the ground when you consider the youngsters ahead of him.

I'm not saying for definite but he couldn't have had a worse start. Especially when you think about what Mourinho said about him after the City game.

No offence, but anyone believing we bought a player for the odd £27mill after a huge investment on Zlatan, just as a "favour" so we could "get to spend £89,5mill" on Pogba needs their heads checked....It's so fecking mental it's not even funny

It's a little bit funny :D

A Martial who hasn't got going, Lingard who'll probably only ever be a squad player, and Rashford who isn't even a wide player?

He'll be golden if he gets going.

Mourinho is clearly learning from the City game, where he was clearly nowhere near ready for it fitness and intensity wise.

He's only had 1 start hasn't he? And that was the disaster v City. So it'd have been madness to play him in the toughest away game.

There's tonnes of time to get him going, but tonight, and I dare say Chelsea away aren't the ones.

Start him Thursday.

Would have liked him on the bench. But this isn't a game for him to start.

It's only the 8th game of the season guys, conspiracy theorists out in full force already.

Suspect he'll be on his way on the summer. Has an air of ADM around him, probably cant be bothered getting 'fit'.

For crying out loud, he forced his way out of renewing with Dortmund because we are his dream club. But yeah, he can't be 'bothered'

Jesus wept.

..... and when he starts games for United against City that is also a favor we are doing for Raiola?!

He just isn't match fit you fool. Should we throw him in another tough game where he is off the pace.

He's had one bad game and people have already decided he's crap and will probably leave in the summer.

A combined 26 goals & assists last season in Bundesliga as he was voted player of the season and he's getting his United career written off because he's missed a handful of games through injury and had one bad half of football amongst a horrible team performance.

Writing him off this early is obviously unfair. But his injury situation seems a little bit suspicious to me and many people did think his weak mentality and Jose's personality were a bad mix when he signed. I wouldn't be surprised to see him work his way into the side and become a major contributor but I also wouldn't be shocked if he never really escaped Mourinho's doghouse. For the three attacking midfield spots, everything so far suggests that he is behind Martial, Rashford, Lingard, Mata, Rooney, and maybe Young as well. That is a lot of players to beat out.

Nope, he's better than them all, bar a top form Martial. He'll start in midweek, and never look back.
