Has political correctness actually gone mad?

Have you seen the movie?

I wouldn't call him dumb, he's cocky and doesn't listen to people. It's quite clear his goal is to win human affection as a way to deal with being abandoned by his human parents. He struggles with his emotions throughout and in the end is a pretty complete character. Far from the stereotypes you've trotted out. Hawaiian lore describes his demigod status so ye he's a 'beefcake'.

All in my opinion of course.
Pogue is right, he’s as thick as shit.

Why is The Rock's character thick as shit in Moana? What does he do?

http://www.universitytimes.ie/2017/11/freshman-students-to-become-gender-neutral-fresh/

First and second-year students, who have been traditionally referred to as “freshman” students in Trinity, will now be known as junior and senior “fresh” students in an effort to be inclusive to all gender identities.

In an email to staff and students, Vice-Provost Chris Morash said the change was approved by the College Board. Morash said that this “small but important change will ensure that all Trinity students are equally included by the language used to describe them”.

The change, according to Morash will be implemented over the next three years. Morash referred to the fact that we are approaching 100 years of women’s suffrage in Ireland in 2018.

Morash referenced the College’s strategic plan, the diversity and inclusion strategy and Athena SWAN gender action plan in his email to students. This move is a significant step towards inclusion of all genders, as Trinity grapples with gender equality. “It is a concrete expression of the university’s commitment to gender equality”, added Morash.

All digital and print literature will be changed in this three-year period to reflect the this new practise. “The commitment of everyone will be crucial to ensuring its implementation”, explained Morash.

It comes as College faces increased pressure to implement greater levels of gender balance in its staff and in general on campus branding.

The email was signed off by Morash and Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union (TCDSU) President Kevin Keane.

This comes just over a year after gender-neutral bathrooms were opened by the College in the Arts Block in collaboration with TCDSU. The move came as part of Trinity’s gender identity and expression policy, launched in June 2014, which stated that “it is not acceptable to restrict a trans person to use disabled toilets or other unisex facilities”. The policy also describes that it is “good practice” for Trinity to provide “non-gender specific facilities where possible”. The policy outlines Trinity’s plans to be inclusive of all students, regardless of gender identity, and emphasises Trinity’s “formal commitment to recognise and support an individual’s gender identity and gender expression”.

Not sure if these two classify as 'politically correct' but here;

“Some people hate others because they are different,” I offer, lamely. A childish but distinct panic enters his voice. “But I’m not different.”

I will teach them to be cautious, I will teach them suspicion, and I will teach them distrust. Much sooner than I thought I would, I will have to discuss with my boys whether they can truly be friends with white people.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s famous dream of black and white children holding hands was a dream precisely because he realized that in Alabama, conditions of dominance made real friendship between white and black people impossible.

History has provided little reason for people of color to trust white people in this way.

I will teach my boys to have profound doubts that friendship with white people is possible. When they ask, I will teach my sons that their beautiful hue is a fault line

The Trump administration is prohibiting officials at the nation’s top public health agency from using a list of seven words or phrases — including “fetus” and “transgender” — in any official documents being prepared for next year’s budget.

Policy analysts at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta were told of the list of forbidden words at a meeting Thursday with senior CDC officials who oversee the budget, according to an analyst who took part in the 90-minute briefing. The forbidden words are “vulnerable,” “entitlement,” “diversity,” “transgender,” “fetus,” “evidence-based” and “science-based.”

The War on Christmas is back folks! Batten down the hatches, let's not let them stop us from saying "Merry Christmas!"

Stores in Norway stop selling Cards Against Humanity because some customers have found it offensive
They also stopped selling World of Warcraft and Call of Duty after it was reported that Breivik had played them. They started selling them again within a couple of weeks, granted, but it was still a ridiculous overreaction. Big, nationwide chains here are deathly afraid of offending. They'd rather overreact before silently backtracking a bit later. Sometimes, they get criticised for their overreaction. In those cases, they'll loudly and proudly backtrack instead.

In this case, it seems to have been triggered by people being shocked by the pedophilia jokes in the latest expansion to the game in question (a Norwegian version of CAH). While I agree that taking it off the shelves is OTT, I can understand how some people would find it offensive (though that's literally the point of the game). In light of that, I can understand the store chains in question choosing to stop selling the game. If they face any significant backlash, they'll be quick to start selling it again.

That’s my old Uni. They do use the word fresher, as a kind of slang. It’s always been called Fresher’s week anyway. I think “Freshman” is the more formal version. “Fresh students” sounds shite. What a stupid idea.
I don't get the whole deal with words having -man at the end being a problem. The -man suffix is also in human and woman, are those gender insensitive too? Correct me if I'm wrong but the origin of the word man refers to the species as a whole.

Yeah, it's such a weird hang-up to have. It's also a pity that centuries old traditions are being disregarded because of people being (over) sensitive about something so trivial. I don't want to get all Rees-Mogg but there is something quite nice about holding onto certain traditions. Especially at a university that is several centuries old.

That is the single most entertaining board game I’ve ever played. Hugely un pc but that is the entire point. That people get offended whilst playing it.
Paedo, cancer etc are all fair game. If you haven’t played it then you should!!

Boys club will always remain a boys club. Gotta do lot better than that.

There are numerous occupations that are pre-dominantly occupied by males. When a country has been hit by a hurricane or a storm you don't see many females out there risking their lives in trying to fix detached, live, power cables. Or find them pulling people from the rubble of fallen buildings after an earthquake. You don't even see them collecting trollies in supermarket car-parks in the pissing down rain. Seems to me some women simply want to pick & choose the areas where they want to compete with men. That's hardly equality is it ?

My female colleagues seem to cope spending their December walking around alone in the rain for eight hours every day.

You can hardly blame them for not finding menial, low paid labour that attractive. Its not that attractive to a lot of men either.
You can hardly blame them for wanting better representation amongst ceo's and other ultra wealthy and powerful positions either.

Fair point with the dangerous professions though.

Where is the white text, goddamn it!!

There’s female dominated professions just like there are male dominated ones.

Seems to me you only want to pick and choose your argument without much thought put into it.

Aye, professions like nursing for example which I'd imagine is very fecking intense for anyone within it tend to be very female-dominated. As are most care professions in general, probably.

Exactly, Nursing is an incredibly demanding job, they may not be risking their lives but they’re saving thousands over the course of their career, as well as working insane hours at the same time.

I'm not too bothered about equal representation because the sexes are by definition different, but equal opportunity is a different matter.
Equal opportunity I do believe in.

Not sure how the dangerous professions bit is relevant. I imagine most of the companies that have all male boards have a large proportion of a female workforce anyway.

This 'argument' is basically the same one politicians and bosses level at British people, regardless of gender: "British people won't do the dirty or hard jobs that foreigners do; that's why companies employ so many foreigners". 'Truth is, we all know the real reason: cheaper labour.

We should change them all to the suffix woman then if it is so meaningless.

Not here in Australia, or at least no solely. There are lots of well paid jobs Australian won't take or won't move to take e.g. seasonal fruit picking. There are abuses of the worker visas with some employers breaking the law and paying below, often well below, minimum wage but that isn't exactly the same as importing workers who will work for less as by law they have to be paid the same. That all said there are still far fewer jobs available than there are people to fill them overall.

I think theres a lot of very dangerous jobs that are quite well played and often male dominated.
Its hard to begrudge them a relatively high degree of reimbursement for it though, don't you think?
Dont think its unreasonable to pay a fireman more than a teacher for instance to pull a random example out of the air (but then teachers are probably underpaid overall?)

Im all for paying nurses more but training more and giving more reasonable working conditions would seem preferable offhand. I dont know what their wages are like though
