Has political correctness actually gone mad?

More often than not it's white liberals being offended in other people's place. In some weird way of sort of dictating what minorities should feel offended about. It's so fecking weird because the average guy doesn't give two fecks if someone braids their hair, wears a sombrero or traditional japanese clothing.

Sometimes but it is also a real thing. Reducing someone's culture to fancy dress can't be good.

I disagree. Id see it more as embracing and celebrating different cultures.

Do you mean that wearing a sombrero or kilt is reducing someone’s culture to fancy dress? And then that’s not good?

Or reducing in a way that only recognising a Mexican by headwear is not good?

Odd choice of word in context of your point. How do you dictate what a minority should feel offended about anyway?

I would see wearing a sombrero as wearing a sombrero. If someone interprets that as reducing Mexican culture down to wearing a sombrero that's on them as far as Im concerned. Im just wearing a sombrero.

Though I have never worn a sombrero, and have no plans to do so.

If someone cleverer than me could post a picture of George Best wearing a sombrero on his return home from Benfica I'd be very grateful.
Anyone criticising Georgie can feck right off.

Aftermath of the sombrerogate.

Wearing a sombrero is no worse than other people saying the British have bad teeth, and we cope with that ok. Whatever happened to sticks and stones? Isn’t that what we teach children ffs

Seriously... Is there a problem with people wearing sombreros?

I dont know if that is even an apt comparison. Saying Brits have bad teeth is insulting. Is wearing a sombrero insulting?

But yes, neither is an issue either way.

And no, I have never encountered anyone who actually had an issue with someone wearing a sombrero. Or kente cloth, a kimono or anything else like that either. If I had actually encountered someone who was offended by it, and discussed the issue with them, maybe I would see a problem and change my view on it. But I havent. I am sure the issue is exaggerated in the media.

It seems that for some people it is a problem if non mexicans wear sombreros and/or ponchos.

Though im not even sure either of those clothing items are exclusively Mexican in origin.

As someone who wastes a lot of time on Twitter, this is a biggie for me. Having to constantly remind myself that the people on there who get offended by any old shite don't represent people in general. And tweets from that tiny minority of over-sensitive people are often the basis for mainstream media spinning a yarn about political correctness going mad.

At the same time, they are real people, though. And, as often as not, as others have already said in this thread, those real people are often white people taking offence on behalf of PoC. It's all very performative. Look at me. Look how woke I am. I'm soooooo sensitive and attuned to the struggle of minorities. Accept me in your tribe of right on, progressive people please. And if you're a laydee, perhaps we could meet for a soy latte and bond over a love of black and white cinema.

Basically, it's all down to people trying to get laid. Like most societal problems.

Do you reckon Guardian journalists get laid more than their peers at, say, The Telegraph, then?

Presumably the same thing is going on at the other end of the political spectrum with people hyping up crime statistics and terrorism. The DM journalists shagging right wing girls and Guardian journos shagging left wing girls.

Its those poor centrist women I feel sorry for. Who is writing articles to get into their knickers?

To be fair, while the context has changed, I'm not sure this is necessarily new. Whenever there's been any social issue or feud in the past, for all the people who've identified with each side there were always plenty in the middle who didn't really give all that much of a shit. The loudest voices are always just going to be more noticeable.

If TIG become a full party, the lads writing the articles for their monthly newsletter will have an endless procession coming at em...

I've never really understood the cultural misappropriation issue. I can understand to a certain extent people of Asian descent being upset when a white actor is cast in a role depicting an Asian person, I've seen people on social media get upset if a white woman wears braids which I think is ridiculous.

Biological sex is what it is.

Gender is either a social construct (i.e. 100% created by external influences) or it’s intrinsic. We’re born with it. It can’t be changed. This idea is central to the concept of people being transgender.

If gender really was just a social construct then that would imply you can’t be born trans. Obviously, that’s a very controversial claim.
This idea in itself is a fallacy (not your point mind). If a male grows up and wants to be a man, it's because society tells him and pushes him that way. boy grows up and wants to be a woman, its intrinsic and how he "feels inside" thus is his natural path. As it is, nature is trans

The only valid cultural appropriation complaints I've ever seen were for the wearing of properly religious or spiritually symbolic attire as fancy dress, i.e. native american headdresses.

The offence taking by white college idiots on behalf of all Asians when a white girl dares to turn up at her prom in a mass-produced Qipao or Kimono is just laughable. Obviously braided hair and sombreros also fall into the latter category.

Seems odd that you feel confident to decide which examples of cultural appropriation are valid and which aren't. Yet you don't think others also not directly affected are allowed a different view.

Of course there is the potential for problems being found where there are none but I think the chances of the opposite are more likely.

Yeah, as a black dude it's disgusting to watch. You have this white PC warrior explaining how a dude with a black wife and black kids can still be racist because of a word he said like wtf?

Yes. In a general sense. How offensive individual examples are of course varies from going as an Australian by wearing a corked hat to Michael Jackson in blackface.

Yet you feel entitled to judge gender identity for others.

Example where I did this? I've noticed I never get an answer to this like when I asked @Silva when he claimed I hated women. Making up absolute bollocks to make some self righteous point and demonise you in the eyes of others. Pathetic stuff

Yeah that's exactly what he's doing, ridiculing trans people. Professional victimhood

That is literally the exact point of the Facebook post. It's to ridicule trans people, how in the eyes of the guy deadlifting it's absurd for trans people to claim that if they transition male to female, that they'd have no competitive advantage, while at the same time a.) completely missing the point and b.) not even managing to prove what he set out to prove. He's basically falling for the tired trope that males who have transitioned to females are still males in every way, and identical to him in genetic makeup and testosterone levels, bone density etc and that therefore him deadlifting a certain weight is supposed to indicate what it would be like for a male who transitioned to a female, who would still (he hypothesizes) smash the record with ease when he clearly doesn't understand what is involved with transitioning, and what changes the trans person would actually go through.

Just a stupid post with no prior thought put into it aimed to get likes, when the guy posting it clearly has no idea what he's even talking about. 'Hey look, this sounds like it would make sense at face value, let's post it to the masses and rack up those likes from people who agree with me without even taking a second to think about whether it's true or not.'

I think he's making fun of the idea that being born male offers no advantages whatsoever. Does being born a male offer no sort of advantage?

For starters, 'no advantage whatsoever' is a terrible yardstick to use. There are plenty, and I mean plenty of completely obvious advantages that males have over other males in all sports. Nobody cares about those, so one person having an advantage over another is not actually an issue that we care about, and it's not an issue that you care about either otherwise you'd be preaching how unfair it is that Ronaldo is able to compete at the same level that the fat keeper who plays for Wigan would be allowed to play at. Or how it's not fair that a younger F1 driver with statistically faster reaction times is allowed to compete with a driver 20 years his senior with statistically slower reaction times.

The issue is not that one person has an advantage at all, it's that one person has such a significant advantage that it's not considered fair. If you're still a male when you compete against a woman, then yes of course you have clear advantages relating to testosterone, bone density, strength etc. If you spend years transitioning to be a female, then no, the large gap significantly diminishes. But despite that, some people including the guy who posted the FB post making a false equivalency in an attempt to get likes, can't accept in their head that a male who has transitioned to a female, is no longer on the same level physically as the male.

The TLDR of that video is 'look, to show you how much of an advantage M->F trans people have, I'm going to demonstrate something to you that the M->F trans person probably wouldn't be able to do' before sitting back and patting himself on the back when the likes come in.

That’s not really the issue here. Which is whether they’re on the same level, physically, as the cis females competing against them? Common sense - and science - would indicate that this is not the case.

Are you dictating how these women should feel about this Pogue?

@Vato is that right?
