Harry Maguire

Their best chance wasn't his fault, the ball travelled into Young's area. Do you count every defender that has a ball go over his head as 'caught under it'?

His booking at the end wasn't even a foul but it wasn't stupid, it stopped a break near the end of a World Cup quarter final and his card gets wiped at the end of the games FFS. It was smart.

He does have his moments but you'll find all defenders do if you watch them all match closely. Perfect games are rare as hen teeth for any player.

The yellow was for kicking the ball.

He kicked the ball away to further slow down the game. It wasn’t a stupid yellow which ever way you want to spin it because it was wiped a few minutes later.

It was a silly yellow card. They weren't going to play that ball quickly.

I love the guy and think he should have been a United player but it doesn't mean he's impervious to criticism.

I never said he was. Look back at my posts in this thread and I’ve said that he has weaknesses defending. Thing is, there aren’t any perfect players about.

I know. You're right as well, the yellow doesn't matter either. I thought it did at the time.

Looked good in a three, reckon his weaknesses might be exposed more in a two. Still undecided. Getting a lot of praise but not enough for what I’d want him to be getting praise for.

Still don't rate him at all, plus he looks like a fcuking troll. Think it's laughable people think he's better than Smalling. But apparently any England player who does anything of note will be sought after.

Think it's laughable that you rate Smalling regardless of how good or not good Maguire is.

I guess he's a decent player but I still feel like he'll concede lots of goals in the PL with 1 CB next to him instead of 2.

Got to be talking 50mil now if you want to sign him, the fact he only cost Leicester 12+ add-ons bargain

Happy for him, great WC so far. Good to see after stumbling across his photos he took as a fan 2 yrs ago. What a story for him already.

I can see us going in for him. Maybe the reason Leicester signed Evans is because they're expecting him to move to a big club this summer.

I don’t think he’s mobile enough to be top drawer and agree with those that think he could get exposed playing in a pairing or a high line. Having a good tournament though. Justified to be starting ahead of the likes of Jones or Smalling

He doesn’t really look like a good footballer - but he’s been brilliant and well done Southgate for playing him ahead of more experienced players. Most managers would have Cahill in the team instead.

I can only assume you want us to replace the entire list of centre-backs then. Because he's the best one we've got - by a mile. And that's with his limited passing etc.

I think Smalling is our best CB - but he’s certainty not right for this England team, Maguire is clearly a better fit and he’s done very well.

Why cant you play both? Maguire, Stones and Walker are clearly better options for the 2 wider CB positions, but theres no reason at all that Smalling couldnt have played in the middle.

Especially when you consider the strength of this England team at the World Cup has been set pieces and goals from CBs, on top of obviously Kane's chance conversion.

Having Maguire AND Smalling at set pieces would have just made England's strength even stronger, whilst defensively being far stronger too. Plus Smalling's pace would help Maguire too just like Walker's might help him

I think Maguire has done well in his role for sure. I wouldn't take him out of the team. I'd just add to him

Well Stones has scored 2 and Maguire has got one on the quarter final - so I think we are doing more than fine from our CBs at set pieces!

Southgate is picking players who fit in with the way England play, it’s a bloody revelation quite frankly. Smalling does not have the skill set to play on this team, that doesn’t mean he’s not a good player.

The way his CB in the middle of the 3 plays is in no way out of Smalling's skillset. Stones isnt doing anything hes not capable of. Its the CBs on the sides of the 3 that need to play the ball and join the midfielders at times. Thats the position that wouldnt suit him. Stones isnt playing there.

I have to disagree. Stones offers a sense of calmness when we play out of the back - he never panics, always picks the right pass, drives forwards with the ball, can shield it when pressured, and has played some nice cross-field balls. Smalling playing in the middle of our current system would be a hindrance as he brings a sense of panic whenever he needs to play it out from the back.

Southgate made the right call.

How mobile is Pique?

Not for where they finished in the table.
Erm they finished 9th

But only 4 clubs conceded more...
(Bournemouth, west ham, Watford and Stoke)

So yeah ranked 7th in attack... ranked 16th in defence... They finished 9th... Whatever way you try and spin the stats they did concede a feck load of goals for a team in the top half

I agree and I think the majority of people do as well.

They also outscored every team outside the top 6. Suggest they played more adventurous football than the rest.

That said, I do think Maguire is best suited to a 3 where his goal threat, passing and stepping out is more important and he has cover from his two mates for his defensive lapses.

I rate Maguire and have done since I watched him in a play off final, where he only played 5 mins extra time but he calmed the whole game down. I feel he will become the player I had always wished Phil Jones had the potential to be in his early days at United. I'd love us to put in a big bid for him.

Gareth has been quite brave to start him over Cahill, but Harry has rewarded Southgate's faith. He has a big presence, a defensive charisma, almost. His sheer physical stature make him a big threat from set pieces and in the opposition's box when you are chasing a goal. Big shout out to Ash for his corners this tournament, but Maguire really made that his. Interestingly, he hasn't really looked the part for Leicester this season at times, but the fact that he has upped his game immensely on arguably the biggest stage of all is testament to his character. Today, every time the Swedes looked to play the through ball to Berg, as they have done with success all tournament, he was there to cover showing great defensive positioning and bravery.

Although he is obviously going to get a lot of praise for his goals, I think defensively he has been imperious and England's best defender. I believe he is an upgrade to any of our CB's, and would absolutely thrive working under Jose and his staff.

.

Arguably but torn chief kemo said it is not an unusual amount of goals for a team to concede who finish in their position... And only once in the last 20 years has a team conceded more and finished 9th... (Bournemouth)

In fact only 3 times in 20 years has a team conceded 60 or more and finished in the top half (Bournemouth spurs and Leicester)

Not suggesting anything about Maguire or Leicester's style... Simply calling torn rubber kemo out on a blatant lie

Smalling cannot pass. The entire play of England has been based on building from the back. Put Smalling there, and the entire gameplan is destroyed.

I know that people here have some weird fetish for Smalling, but let it go. Southgate made the right decision for not calling him, and it has payed of.

I disagree completely. The panic is from you, not from Smalling.
