Harry Maguire

Amazed at the comments in this thread. He arses around with the ball far too much and positionally is very poor.

He also allowed Columbia to score a goal in extra time because he was busy looking at a ball that wasn't on the pitch while the actual ball was being thrown to him...I know the ref stopped the game but this was absolutely astonishingly stupid. There was actually no reason to stop the game at all.

He just looks like a big lumbering version of Blind to me...he'll convince people he's playing well because he can sod around with the ball and look composed, which people seem to love, but when you actually look at what he does during the game, you realise he's just doing what other defenders do, except badly.

Against Tunisia he was a joke at times. Nearly cost England a goal at one point because he was trying to do skills by the corner flag and lost the ball. Did the same thing again a few minutes later. Abandoned his position completely in the second half so he could get on the ball more, and do the sum total of feck all with it.

Walker and Stones have similar tendencies but can actually move faster than a sloth so at least have half a chance of bailing themselves out. Maguire will be the one to cost England in all likelyhood, because when he gets caught out arsing around oor daydreaming which he no doubt will at some point, there's no way he's getting back in time to redeem the situation.

This.

Don't think Leicester is going to sell him this Summer, they don't look the type of club who needs to sell all their best players to survive.
Yeah, agreed. Especially with Mahrez seemingly on the move. Plus I doubt maguire has even thought about leaving given he hasn't been there long.

Terry and King were great at playing out of the back.

Not for England. He'd just lump it up to Crouch or Rooney/Owen to chase. King barely played with injuries. Mainly due to the straight line 4-4-2 system Sven and Capello played.

We aren’t, our owners are incredibly wealthy, Maguire is more likely to captain us than leave
Don't see any kind of problem with that, of course one day it would be good for him to be playing at Champions League level, but maybe Leicester has that type of ambition for the future. Also think he should stay there tbh.

Would swap him for one of Jones/Smalling in a heartbeat, a back 3 of Maguire Bailly and Lindelof would be exciting to see, with Rojo Tuanzebe and potentially Fosu Mensah filling in when needed.

He's still young for a center back, no rush for him to leave Leicester.

Good with the ball and wins a good amount of headers, but I wasnt impressed with him defensively yesterday

He’s become hilariously overrated. I doubt anyone who’s not English rates him.
only you bitter celts thinks he's overrated, I think most English fans have him spot on, not the quickest off the mark but not slow once he's in full flow, pretty dominant in the air and superb on the ball. I would be interested what other nations think but lets face it England could win every game 9-0 and you celts would say they were crap.

He is England's best defender and probably our most aggressive passer too as he looks to go forward and too many suffer from the Spanish disease of sideways/backwards stat padding passes, he's certainly one of the few capable of playing a ball for Vardy or Rashford to run in behind to in the squad which is something that will be a big weapon in coming games

Welshman here and I’ve rated him highly for a couple years. He’s very good imo, posted a few times about him on here ages ago so it’s not like I’ve only started eating him due to the WC

Edit: rating not eating :D

when we first signed him he had my heart in my mouth several times as I simply wasn't used to having a defender that does what he does when he surges up field or his confidence on the ball, I'm sure at some point he will cost someone a goal by doing it as all players will but they will be few and far between. If anything his build leads people to underrate him and falsely label him as slow, which he isn't, not the quickest when he starts but he's quick enough

I don’t think he’s a bad player he’s ok. Personally I think he’s around the same level as Mawson. I just find so many have jumped on the Maguire bandwagon despite his performances not being anything special, quite odd.

Think its to counter act the press who are desperate to praise Stones/Walker but lay any blame at Maguire, at least on the podcasts, I happen to listen to, they will make excuses for Walker's fecked up back pass but would be calling for Cahill had Maguire done the same

To think about this seriously, I believe he could perhaps be an improvement on Jones but it isnt a guarantee. He made mistakes himself last season defensively. And while he does look for more creative passes than a Smaller or Jones, he also gives the ball away more. How do people really feel about a CB who has less than 80% pass accuracy (78%) ? He'll try to find a teammate in a better position more often but on the flip side he gives the ball away more often. From being tackled more often to having more loose touches that give the ball away more, because he will also run with the ball more.

I think back to when Nani was playing here. He used to try adventurous passes all the time and some led to great chances and goals, other times he simply gave the ball away. He was willing to take a chance to try and make something happen. At the time everyone was up in arms about him giving the ball away. But now people want their CBs to be doing it in far more dangerous areas than the opponent's wing. Strange to me

He's very good, but not quite "first-choice centre back in a back four for Man Utd" good. He's good on the ball, and solid in the tackle, but both for Leicester and for England (e.g. v Tunisia) he gets exposed defensively time and again due to his big turning circle, lack of pace and questionable positioning, and that's generally when playing alongside two other CBs who can help bail him out - with just one other CB in a back four he'd get even more exposed. He's not at the level of van Dijk or Smalling in the air either.

He's great in the air and also very good with the ball at his feet. I think a lot of people criticising him are being very harsh, he may be exposed in a different system but he seems to suit the way we play perfectly. 3 man defense suits him.

Maguire's a throwback to old-time, hard-nosed, lunch pail football. Not slick, not fast, he gets in the mix with all the subtlety of a jack hammer. And he wants to win -- you can see it in his face.

it already had, there is a desperate need for some to knock England players for some reason

erm...I meant the other way around. Win a knock-out game for the first time in 12 years and suddenly average players are world beaters.

with the possible exception of Harry Kane no one has claimed anyone in this squad is world class

Maguire looks great until you start to pay attention to the important pieces of defending. Wins a lot of headers he should win on long balls to static targets, but when they start to move and balls are whipped into dangerous areas his limitations stand out. He really is a poor mans' Hummels or a homeless version of Blanc. Made plenty of small mistakes in this tournament and has been up very average attacks, might not face a really threatening forward line until the final such is the draw.

He has been a beast in the WC, but he has been good as well with Lei and Hull. Would love to have him here, a huge improvement on Rojo, Blind and Jones(only because he gets injured all the time!!)

People turning up their nose at this guy are ridiculous, we've had Jones and Smalling for several years ffs

Would be a beast in the Italian league, lacks the speed to be top4starter week in week out but decent enough player for England in 3men defense

I said we should have been in for him when he left Hull -would have been around £15-20m. He’d be a lot more than that now, and probably overpriced.

him and Jonny Evans at the back for us next season if we stick with a back 4 will be a decent ball playing pair
