True, but he's not some god who waves his wand and gets all player selections right. Sanchez wasnt (it was debated on the Caf with stats saying he was declining so you're wrong about that), Fred was at times abysmal last season, he has a long way to go to prove he's capable of playing for us long term.
Yeah but thats to be expected with Liverpool players. The same happens with all of their transfers, Fabinho, Firmino got the same. Heck even Allison who I said would be class for Liverpool still gets doubted despite his terrific first season. They certainly haven't got lucky though, all good scouting and making sure they spent the money in the right areas and trusting their youth to pick up the slack. It's annoying how good they've been in the market lately.
Ultimately it seems like Ole is convinced Maguire is the right player so it's looking more likely we'll go into next Season with him at the club.
@Sultan - that would be very difficult to prove with stats as Matic plays as a DM and CM. Anyone with eyes will agree with your point though, Matic doesnt have the engine anymore to track runners. It was a recurring theme all throughout last season which cost us many goals. I still find it so frustrating that we didn't go for Fabinho, given we had a clear weakness at RB and DM. He was the perfect option to fill that void in the squad. Don't let me rant about that one.

I mean he cost them £17m from Hull two years ago and at the time I recall plenty of people saying he'd be worth taking a punt on. You have to wonder what kind of drugs the scouts at this club are on.

There is a list of better defenders that aren't attainable, and there is a list of defenders that could develop into better defenders. But i don't trust our scouts to identify the right ones. You're right, there must be someone better. At this point, i just really want us to sign a center back who will instantly improve our starting eleven.
If it were up to me, id go all out for Koulibaly.

Well those on the CAF who saw the decline coming need a medal and a job at United cos can't remember speaking to one United fan who wasn't buzzing we had beaten City to his signature (to be fair we could be signing Messi and half the people on the CAF would find faults with it, people just love to moan and put everything down, happens).
A manager is not going to get every signing right, Fergie had some absolutely horrendous signings in his time, they are human after all mate.
Fred was abysmal for a lot of last year, as Lindelof was the season before, as the likes of Pires was in his first year at Arsenal, sometimes players take time to adjust. He was a lot better towards the back end and had some half decent performances (PSG away, Arsenal away) where he looked the player we thought we were getting.
Trouble is, you spent 50m on AWB (Don`t quote the potential argument, as its an opinion, nothing more), you have more or less set the market level yourselves, so it is unsurprising it has been rejected. 75-80m, he will go though I reckon, as Top already said (From the outset) that he wants a world record fee (Crazy a$$ money)

It's strange. Last year Ed stopped this deal, this year its ok to give 70 mil for him. Basically we're going for the defender, date to say, Jose initially wanted.

What you need to understand is that we don't need the money and that to go out and buy a ready made replacement from this league, we'll end up having to pay £40 / £50m for someone like Dunk or the Burnley chap whose name I won't even attempt to spell. What's the point?
Apparently we have £100m + to spend without having to sell to improve the team as the board see it as a great time to make a push, with yourselves, Chelsea and Arsenal all being in a bit of a mess or a transition. Bringing in Tielemans and a top class winger could see us have enough to push for the top 6, or with a slice of luck something even higher. Not saying that's what we'll achieve, but this season is viewed as THE season to do it.
Looks like we're overpaying for everyone by about 40%. It's not as if we're fighting against other teams and getting ready made world class players at that price either. We really are the biggest mugs in football. What do we pay our scouts for?
He is a good player, we just have to bite the bullet and pay the price. Maybe we will learn from our poor planning so it doesn't happen again.

Totally agree with you mate, similar to Zaha/Wan Biasska at Palace, Premier League clubs now don't need the money as badly as they once did, so they can sit back and demand what they want for their star players. Arsenal bidding 40m is a joke for Zaha, everyone knows that for Premier League players you pay a premium.
We could go and buy Dias from Benfica but we then risk them needing a season to adjust to the league, which at the minute we can't afford especially if we are spending 50/60M on them, need them to hit the ground running, just look at Lindelof first season and Fred last year.
