Harry Maguire (Out): Chelsea eyeing a shock swoop for Harry Maguire | Utd say not for sale

We’ll be absolutely bonkers to not let him go, too many individual mistakes for a CB, can’t have that.
Absolute disaster of a player, that should have spent his career playing for bottom half or midtable teams at best, never a United player let alone captain.

Let him go, don’t even think about it.

I would give away Maguire for free and pay his wages so we can plant that virus, should have listed Pogba on top of that.

Timber, the gowl, signed a new contract :(

That doesnt matter. It is what Ajax/Overmars did in the past too. Sign a new contract for a pay increase and extention but with the promise that the player would be let go for a certain amount of money. Players will get more money, player will be sold if a good offer comes in and Ajax can make more money. Unless the player regresses (like Tagliafico did) it is a good deal for everyone that way. Overmars might not be there anymore but that way of dealing with transfers worked well for them.

Fair, fair, fair. There is hope yet then :D

Would be absolutely stupid to sell unless they are offering massive money - 60+ million. No way we can replace him effectively for anything less than that, and I for one am not comfortable with our inevitable starting center backs for half the season being Lindelof and Martinez when Varane is out injured.

Selling Maguire just creates another hole in a squad already full of them. We only have so much money. If this was May and we had a ready replacement with a fee already agreed, then yeah maybe sell him, be at this stage of the window it would be incredibly stupid.

Maguire is a good player.
He carries the weight of immense price tag (unrealistic. If he wasn’t english, we would have bought him for max 35 mil) and being captain when he shouldn’t really be.

The team we have exposes his weaknesses and his strengths can’t really shine a lot. He has to play 1 on 1 against quick players all the time.

Put VVD in a team with McTominay as DM and Dalot/Telles/fat Shaw as fullbacks and he’ll look much worse too.

Maguire had more good/okay than bad performances for us and has been great for England.
Unfortunately he became a meme. And our own fanbase is extremely toxic towards him.
Maguire can play very good for 89 minutes but if he makes one mistake, he’ll immediately get called “the worst defender in history”.

Let’s see how he does with proper DM in front of him, shall we?

That’s the thing, you’re not allowed to consistently make individual mistakes as a CB at these levels, that’s what separates the top players from the rest, he’s made more terrible individual mistakes within a single match, multiple times, last season, than Ferdinand made in his entire United career.
He still makes them, these terrible laps in concentration that gift the opponent the ball in dangerous situations.
You can’t have a defender who does that at United, you have to be ON for more than 90 minutes.

Sell him, we might not get another opportunity.

He doesn't suit high line. His passing is erratic at best and crumbles under pressure. I'd rather get a "lesser" player that fits the style we want to play rather than keep Maguire.

There should be a massive clearance to be done with this squad and as soon as someone (ETH) starts doing it people get nostalgic about it, which is mind boggling.

I don't disagree, but it seems like the player ETH wants is Timber and he's not going to be available until January at the earliest. Perhaps the problem is that very few of us can get our head around the possibility that we can actually replace the 10 players Ralf talked about last season with upgrades in a single transfer window.

We have less than 2 weeks to find a replacement if he leaves. It wouldn't be smart to sell but its also hard to pass on the opportunity of selling him.

I think the amount of vitriol Maguire gets from a subsection of our 'fans' is shocking to be honest.

He's a good, not great defender and of course when compared against the pantheon of some of our greats, for sure he's going to be found wanting, but the booing, and the abuse he gets online is vile.

The only argument for keeping him is purely down to numbers. If he goes, then we have an injury-prone Varane, Lindelof (who I quite like, but he's not exactly a world beater), and the new guy. Maguire ain't good, but he's always available. And I don't think we'll be able to get another in before the window closes, on top of what we already need.

Otherwise, it would be a no-brainer to sell him to Chelsea.

I feel like you’ve not seen the performances the captain of Manchester United has been putting in for the last year.

Yeah, we'd have 3 cbs if you don't count on Bailly on whom you can never count.

No, the abuse is uncalled for but there shouldn’t be any surprise that he’s targeted.
sad thing thing is if he leaves the next set of fans will be the same, it's become a popular thjng to do to abuse him

We'd be bonkers to let him go. There is no way we can go into this season depending on Martinez (question marks over his height), Varane (inability to stay fit), Jones (enough said), Bailly (on his way out).. Maguire, despite being rubbish is our most reliable CB, it is the sad reality.

Whoever decide to not let him go; so Eth or Murtough, is in idiot. No but or if or something. This was (if whole story is true) great chance to get rid of expensive player who doesn't fit in our system. And we say no. Bloody hell

No, it all depends on what price we get and the potential of a replacement.

Look, we hit jackpot with this offer. We have a perfect chance to get some money back for a flop. This chance is now and will not happen again. Next year he is year older and will be bench option so his price will drop even more. Plus his wages will stop any deal with midtable club. We sell him now or he will stay for years.

Only explanation is that ETH wants him to stay. Which is same mistake which Ole did with many players.

You want to go into the season with Martinez, Lindelof, Varane and Jones? - Bailly seems to be on his way out?

The issue is that Varanne and Lindelof are both injury prone and unreliable, so if we sell Harry we don't have enough back up. On the other hand he does not fit into Erik's style. Personally I'd sell him and use Tuanzebe and Mengi as back up to Varanne

He was pretty good in his first season and will surely benefit from Casemiro being there, but it’s hard to see how he’ll thrive in a high line or recover from such a confidence hit here. I’d move on if I were him.

Martinez, Varane and Lindelof as first 3 options. Jones and Tuanzebe as 4th and 5th. That is enough for a season ffs. Plus Mengi and Shaw who can play it in case of emergency

Has there even been any confirmation of what Chelsea are prepared to offer for him? Unless it's stupid money, there's no reason why we should let him go.

Maguire is a good player bereft of confidence. In a functional team he can still be a decent player, I'm not convinced Chelsea's offer would reflect that.

It’s shock I know but seeing these players come under different managers with mush mash of styles and how ETH lines up it’s safe to say that very few of the whole team can matchup to that philosophy.

on top of that if you want a pressing, attacking football you have to have 11 players that fit the bill and you can’t afford to have the likes of Maguire, McT, Ronaldo as it breaks the whole setup.

before the season kicked in we needed GK, LB, RB, CB, DM, CM, RW(assuming sancho is on the left) and a ST.

which basically is a new team..

Edit: also I think it was either Martinez or Timber, not both. Timber is 5’10’’ , can’t see playing a midget can pair week in and week out.

I don't agree. FFS.

Anyway, for a sesson you need first pair; that is Varane-Martinez. You need good backup; that is Lindelof. Jones is not going nowhere so why not use him in EL. Also, lets finally see what is with Tuanzebe; is it United quality or not. Plus Mengi as younger player.
We can argue about quality but depth is there.

If you can't have youth prospect as 5th option then just close the academy.

It's not so much the quality for me, even is Martinez does well for us he needs a defender who can dominate aerially next to him - this leaves only Varane who's injury record does not fill me with confidence.

It's basically harassment and really appeals to a weirdly angry demographic. Every other recommended YouTube video seems to be a Maguire comedy moments compilation with his every slip magnified and commented upon.

Who could be arsed spending their spare time making that, or watching it? People just love watching him fail.
